    Before I started decorating cakes, I used my Badger art airbrush with a filtered mask. It didn’t matter about splatter because I was in my art studio. Now that I am airbrushing cakes and cookies in my kitchen studio, I use a large cardboard box to catch the spray. I also have a new compressor and airbrush, because it would be toxic to use my other for edible purposes. The gravity load Badger that I purchased about 10 years ago is still running strong! I absolutely love it! Thank you for this tutorial and I hope you are all staying safe. I noticed you haven’t posted in a while so I was wondering if COVID shut your bakery down.

    This is a fun tutorial! Also an idea. I’ve done plenty of splatter painting. The Best and most consistent way is put it on your fingers and flick it. You can control where you are flicking as well as not get any on your nose lol

    I just got my airbrush and found your tutorial helpful. For the home cake decorator who is just starting (and probably can’t spring for the spray booth you have 🙂), do you have suggestions for how to protect the work surface/area? Do you need a spray booth with a fan, or will a plain box work for smaller applications when you’re not spraying a long time? I’ve seen others say to wear a mask? I’m hoping not to make my kitchen rainbow colored if I can avoid it!

    • @AmandaOakleafCakes
      @AmandaOakleafCakes 2 года назад

      Before we had the Cake Safe setup we rigged up our own solution of putting a small home air filter in front of a box fan with cardboard wings taped on the sides. It's not nearly as good but it is better than nothing. Either way covering your work surface with plastic wrap before spraying makes clean up a lot easier. Happy airbrushing!

    I just got a new airbrush for my birthday... I'm so excited .. I looked up the dollar amount for these special boxes that you are spraying the cake inside of with the fans and their over $700 😳........ I think I'll try a box first or I'll try wish first to see if I can get one cheaper.

    11:45 I know where you were going with this (“Spiral Galaxy” and what not) but I’ve never seen such thin lines on any Hubble picture, no matter what spectrum of light they filtered. What I wanna say is that this doesn’t look like a galaxy but rather like lipid residue lines on your telescope lens 😄

    Can you taste the paint whenever eating the cake? I know you use edible paint but I'm wondering if you can taste it like you can if you use cheap food coloring

    • @OakleafCakesBakeShop
      @OakleafCakesBakeShop  2 года назад

      The airbrush food dye we use does not have a strong taste. It is just a thin layer that gets sprayed on the outside of the fondant. You're more likely to taste food dye when it's a lot of a dark color stirred into buttercream for example.

    • @OakleafCakesBakeShop
      @OakleafCakesBakeShop  3 года назад

      Hi, you would only use gel colors while kneading color into the fondant before covering the cake. After the cake is covered in fondant you will use specifically airbrush food color which is watery enough to spray out of your airbrush gun and coat the surface.

  • @quinnsbakeshop6363

    Should i let the Airbrushed color dry before piping any design or it's better to pipe while it's still wet. Also what's the best way to dry the airbrushed cake, inside the fridge or roomtemp? Thank u! Hope u can notice me

    • @OakleafCakesBakeShop
      @OakleafCakesBakeShop  3 года назад +1

      Hi! It's definitely better to let the airbrush color dry before piping over it - otherwise, the color might bleed into your frosting (or the frosting might slide on the wet dye). The cake should just sit out at room temperature until the airbrush dye is dry. (As a general rule, marshmallow-fondant-covered cakes should not spend time in the fridge, since the humidity inside refrigerators can cause the fondant to sweat and melt. Not only would the airbrush dyes not dry, but the whole surface would be sticky, wet and tacky!)

    • @OakleafCakesBakeShop
      @OakleafCakesBakeShop  3 года назад

      Shiny could be any of these 3 things: if it's humid in the kitchen your cake will get 'sweaty', if you use a lot of airbrush dye it will look wet and might even run if applied too thick, and/or you can spray the whole cake with a pearl shimmer.

      I see they haven't answered. I would not recommend it. as it thaws the excess water will affect the colour, unless they are waterproof, which I don't think exist yet.

    I heard about putting chocolate and coco butter inside the airbrush, will it be good ?

    • @OakleafCakesBakeShop
      @OakleafCakesBakeShop  5 лет назад +9

      For this two-tiered cake, it's about a tablespoon of very dilute food color spread over 30 servings. If you're concerned about the food color you could do some research on various brands of airbrush food coloring and their ingredients. If you can produce any good literature or studies about adverse effects of any ingredient in airbrush food coloring, in such small amounts, please send it our way. Thus far we are unaware of any.
      To be perfectly honest, if you're concerned about health I have no idea why you would bypass sugar to jump to food color as a concern. There is way more literature surrounding sugar. While I think sugar in moderation is fine, and certainly nothing like tobacco, it does seem analogous to worrying about the adverse health effects of dye used in your cigarette rolling paper.

    • @katscraft

      I noticed that lots of people leave the fondant on their plate and just go for the cake, so they don't have whatever is on the cake. I guess they are usually too sweet. This marshmallow fondant sounds good. I definitely have a look at it.
