Back in the 1990's, in search of the next big thing, producers in the US grabbed a Tokusatsu show from Japan, reshot and repackaged it for American audiences and made history with The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.
Being copycats, suddenly everyone was trying to replicate the formula and there was a rush of shows trying to capitalize on the Power Rangers success.

On Beetleborgs, you just can't hate a show where a character sees a headless ghost, makes a crack about Marie Antoinette, then tells the camera, "Don't worry, you'll get that one in a few years."
I forgot they made that joke, thanks for the throwback!

This "Secret Galaxy" video includes content from "Toy Galaxy".
Is Toy Galaxy canon? YES!
👏👏 multiverse
Mystic Knights was one of my favorites from the 90s, second only to Power Rangers. MK sparked my forever fascination with anything medieval or involving the four elements Earth, Air, Fire and Water.
I always thought the genie in Big Bad Beetle Borgs looked more like Jay Leno than Elvis or anyone else. Amazing he never sued.
Me too lol
The actor used to have a RUclips channel where he posted old behind the scenes tapes he recorded.
Most of us did back then since Leno and his chin's late night talk show was just peaking in popularity and was becoming a household name. And a household chin.
Sigh. Devastates me that this compilation could use a "in 2024 Hasbro decided the Power Rangers were dead weight, and sublicensed the brand to Playmates, but with no tv shows, movies, or video games in the works, the brand is clearly on life support and its not looking good" tag....
it took me until around 23 to really understand tokusatsu actually is and learn just how much I love the style
I got my start with Power Rangers, VR Troopers, SSSS, and even Masked Rider and Mystic Knights. I also started my Godzilla quest at a young age and to-date have seen every film (and own almost all of them too). But it wasn't until around 2011 when I finally made the jump into Super Sentai, then Kamen Rider, and then Ultraman. it's very much my "thing" and it's always a joy to be able to explain it to friends and talk about it these days, especially since it's getting *slightly* more known and popular outside just Godzilla and Power Rangers.
🎶 "Big Bad Beetle-Borgs!"
Don't forget Dynaman, the 1987 parody dub that ran on Night Flight on the USA network. Several names you'd recognize from The Kids in the Hall are listed in the writers credits. They address the issue of localization in a creative way in the very first episode.
I still believe the headcanon that the Mystic Knights were precursor Mystic Force Rangers who used magic to access the Grid
That could work, actually.
It makes sense to me 😊
I liked the concept of Mystic Knights. I wished that everyone of them had powered up mode and Deidre could have at least better helmet, maybe whole armor.
Furbus! ...I actually never caught Tir Na Nog back in the day but your coverage has me interested in checking it out 🤔
it has 2 seasons the kelly family made the themesong
What a glorious time, I loved them all, especially Mystic Knights. S-tier theme song
As a kid in the target audience I really loved most of this stuff. Being a fan of Mystic Knights feels like a fever dream though because of how little of a lasting impact it had. As an adult it's not been hard for me to find people my age to talk about the old days of power rangers or Beetleborgs but not Mystic Knights I loved the magic and the armor that was not just spandex and if Mystic Knights had taken off I could see myself being more into it than Power rangers. I think it would have been worth mentioning in the video that like power ranges "6th ranger" tradition Mystic Knights got a 5th knight I always wondered why they forced in a 5th one who did not fit the theme of elements as their power. I think his thing was the forest or plants and he had the "Twin Timber Axes"
I may have been just out of the target demo for MMPR, but giving me heavy GoLion/Voltron vibes I was definitely hooked! didn't get into many of the spinoffs, but kinda dug the first few seasons of MMPR.
Power Rangers, Masked Rider, VR Troopers, Mystic Knights and Beetleborgs. What a fun line up.
I loved Jo from beetleborgs. And the red head of Tir na Nog.
Tattooed teenage alien fighters from Beverly hills
Dude I thought about that immediately. So weird and off to be memorable. I've got other words I'd use to describe it but I don't know if you're a fan.
I don't remember that show.
@@teamsteed1 it's uh...kinda forgettable.

You can't imagine how weird it was to have mmpr and other american variants on air with real japanese tokusatsu at the same time.
From Bioman to Liveman, hell we even got a few metal heroes such as gaban, sharivan or winspector. Tv in the 80's and 90's in France was weird, man.
VR Troopers lawn sprinkler...
This along with the Evangelion bowling pin outfits are my Holy Grails.
I love that you put all this in order in one video. Great idea.
My family (military) was stationed in Japan in the early 80s, so when I was a little kid I was watching Dynaman And Bioman, as well as Ultraman and the Space Sheriff series. Imagine my surprise years later when I first saw adverts for Power Rangers and VR Troopers.
Never saw the original series season 1 of MMPR was based off of (and finding out it could have been Bioman made me sad), but seeing scenes in VR Troopers I remembered watching as a kid was sure something.

Seen all the individual episodes, just clicked to like and help the algorithm
Did you know that RUclips has now trained its algorithm to ignore comments containing the word "algorithm" when calculating numbers for popularity and engagement? It's like "Algorithm" is the new "MacBeth" for RUclips commenters.
You gotta say AUTHENTIC stuff. You know, like "FURBIS."

Power Rangers The Movie was the first movie I saw as a kid that made me think "movies can be bad"
You should watch The Room😅
@@jguinto101 She said it was the first, not the last or worst...
@5:16 Power Rangers 2.0 TimeForce? Eh? Lol
You had me a mmpr , ssss and Kamen Rider! Year of tokuzatsu!
I still have my VR Troopers board game
Hope we get to see a new PR series adaptation after Cosmic Fury in the future.
God, I loved these shows. I was a little too old to be the target audience, but I still loved theses shows. They captured my imagination like nothing else ever had, or has, since.
Godzilla, King of the Monsters! first appeared in English in 1956. Rather than a simple dub of the Japanese-language original, this work represented an entirely re-edited version that restructured the plot to incorporate a new character played by a native English-speaking actor, Raymond Burr. Ultraman gained popularity when United Artists dubbed it for American audiences in the 1960s.
Just so you know, there’s really nasty audio glitches during the “we’ll be right back” cards at 23:58 and 1:29:06
I used those in my vlogs 😆 glad someone else remembers them!
Now this is a compilation I’m really looking forward to watching

laughed way harder than I should have
I love these marathon episodes!
One of the best seasons of Power Rangers was Power Rangers Hyper force in 2017, but is an TTRPG show on The Hyper RPG Twitch channel! It even had Paul Schrier(Bulk from original series) playing the yellow Power Ranger Jack D. Thomas! It had a few former Power Rangers join them! Saban considers it as part of the TV series!
All these shows were my jam, especially Mystic Knights.
Furbus!!
Sorry few days late, took a few to get through it, great stuff as always!
Love it! Thank you!
Let's Samurize Guys! (I still remember it).
[Fire Within Me, Air Above Me, Earth Beneath Me, Water Around Me, Forest Before Me] - Mystic Knights of Tir na Nog
I'm so down let's go! Power rangers was my childhood but I watched all of these shows
Jamie Kennnedybin the VR Troopers pilot 😂😂😂
Fun fact: 'Tokusatsu' is officially recognised in the Oxford English Dictionary
I never noticed as a kid, and I watched alot of VR Troopers.
Thanks Dan
I remember specifically on GMTV's children's block they aired Beetleborgs and refered to Flabber as a 'magician', and there were some Beetleborg comics in the UK.
Awesome video.
I enjoyed these videos and watched the whole thing.
I LOVED the Mystic Knights
Same here. The second season "Mystic Knights: Battle Thunder" was robbed."
A great video of some of the greatness things that I was raised on
I've seen all this already. Yup. Watched it all. All over again :)
Mystic Knights was so badass, and what a unique mythology to base a show on
You forgot Power Rangers Zeo
You are back on my algorithm again 🎊
Just finished the video, interesting phenomena!
This is directly scratching the nostalgia itch in my brain.
Wtf was that highpitch noise that almost deafened me.... at 24:00
x 2:03:22 My nickname when I was detassling corn was "Raw Spaghetti-Os Boy" because I would bring a can of Spaghetti-Os and eat them for lunch (I brought a can opener).
I will still absolutely never forgive them for killing the momentum of Kamen Rider as that series was tailor made for "holy crap!" especially once it got into the Heisei era.
What about Ultraman? A show that preceded Power Rangers.
Guessing that Secret Galaxy ep was not created as of yet. (Please be on the list)
I remember seeing Infra-man as a kid. I always remembered it as a TV series, but I guess it was just a movie. And Chinese.
It would be cool to see Ultraman covered. But that's a lot of ground to cover. And Vintage Henshin covered a lot of the (frequently aborted) attempts at bringing Ultraman to the U.S. So, they'd have to maybe pick one version to focus in on. Maybe the United Artists dub of the original or the failure of the Japan/Australia coproduction Ultraman: Towards the Future.
I don't think they covered Ultraman yet. I think this video is only centered around the shows Saban produced.
It's also worth mentioning that there is an English dub of Ultraman Tiga that aired in the early 2000's. The dub was done by 4Kids and aired after Fox Kids was rebranded to the FoxBox, shortly after Disney had bought Saban.
I think this video is about ips produced for a Western audience, unless there's something about Ultraman I don't know about.
An older coworker told me about a Japanese show from this genre that had an American dub release back in the 70s or 80s .
Western produced stuff like Beetleborgs can stand in its own category.
The actor on that played JB on Vr troopers was on the music video with Toni Braxton
Power Rangers and Beetle Borgs were the two successes and Billy Forester himself said he loved the Flabber character because it give him everything he had from the 80's and early 90's and in his short career he said it gave him freedom. The rest were just flops in every way. The Blond kid Wesley Barker grew up and used his money for education and a good career like the Power Ranger characters all nowadays used their money wisely, other just got big headed and to see where they ended up is tragic.
Thought it was Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo.😊
Ferbus!!!
Wheres (ttafbh) tattooed teenage alien fighters from Beverly hills
Love ❤️ Power Rangers and Beetleborgs Metallix
I don't know if this is a Tokusatsu specifically, but does someone remember a show where a group of teenagers battle monsters, but the main villains included a cartoonist who was in charge of drawing the monster of the week and then the villains gave life to the monster with their powers? I remember watching it on Perú along Power Rangers Turbo, but I forgot completely the name.
Liking and commenting hoping more people see this hard work
I feel like Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future should be in this conversation. Like someone writing Shakespeare years before they ever encountered any of their work
FURBIS.
You know, as I recall, Fox Kids imported Ultraman for their Saturday morning lineup. They didn't Power Ranger it, either. They just straight up dubbed it in English and let it roll.
was Queen Maeve in Knights of Terror na Nog the reason there is a character in The Boys Called Queen Maeve?
I'm here.
Caitlyn became an accomplished soap star.
I have my original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Megazord and a red ranger deluxe action figure from 1994 on a shelf behind me. And way more megazords and action figures, though the red ranger is the only one from that original line that I still have. And he's wearing the green ranger shield for some reason.
This was my childhood. Once a ranger, always a ranger.
And I have the vehicles from Big Bad Beetle Borgs, the blue, green and red ones, with tiny figures inside.
I read the title as “When Tonkatsu Invaded America” at first. I’m hungry.
Y’all forgot bible man 😂
Whose "Bible Man?" 🤔
@@teamsteed1 google it. It’s the best vhs home video Christian Batman rip off that’s ever existed. There’s even action figures
Loved power rangers, and only really fell off of it once it got to nick. Mystic knights was cool
Power Rangers seems to be struggling of late. I hope the new deal with Playmates leads to some good stuff.
Is there any conflict that tacos can't help to resolve?
Ferbis? Ferbuss? Firbus! How does one even spell that? Oh well, I tried. I watched "Power Rangers The Movie" in theatres as a kid with several of my friends at that time. I think six or seven of us all went on the same night. Ivan Ooze was terrifying. I believe we were a little young (I was only 10!) for this movie. It seemed a lot darker then the show at the time. Or maybe he was just very creepy and gross. Hmm. I should go back and rewatch the whole series to that point again... Wait!
Before I go looking for episodes, I had another thing to comment! I remember watching all of these shows as a kid. Some of my friends had the Genesis video games based on at least the Power Rangers- or maybe there was only one? I remember playing an arcade style 2d Fighting game that actually had some combos and stuff. It was fun if you knew the moves. Or if you had time to practice. Which we did. This was a crazy long video, and I'm glad to see content from previous iterations of this series coming back. I remember seeing the Tir Na Nog toys in the stores, but I never asked to buy any of those. My favorite toys weren't even directly mentioned in these videos, although they allude to a series that exists in it's universe (Cowabunga, dudes and dudettes!). It all boils down to one thing: The problem is time. Was back then, is still now.
I liked the intro for Power Rangers. Recruit a team of teenagers with attitude. Is there any other type of teenager?
Any chance of an episode on Kamen Rider Dragon Knight?
Same here I'm looking forward to it as well
"Transforming time?" Nah. That just didnt cut it.
Tacos solve all Japanese Shows from the 80s rebranded in the90s-2000s bad blood 😂
Ultraman toga should have been on the list.
Only about halfway through this but Dan does know the first MMPR movie wasn't canon to the tv series right? The Turbo movie was but not the MMPR movie.
While the wrongly colored skin of the Tir Na Nog toys can be excused for season one, the prototypes for season 2 seem to make the very same mistake though...
90s American Tokusatsu outside Power Rangers aren't last as well as Power Rangers

Fun fact because of marvel super sentai is born with the very first one called spiderman when the contracts is finish with marvel they created new ip called super sentai which becomes a hit in japan after that saban had deal with super sentai to import it to the english speakers and sometime has pass hasbor owns power ranger they decided to cut ties with super sentai and reboot the show with orginal suits villains and zords even morphers i dont know when will come on.
Super sentai was not born because of marvel.
Himitsu Sentai Gorenger was the first.
@@23Lgirl yes it is because of marvel deal with toei in the pass they agreed to create new show for japanese people which one of this show is called toei spiderman with giant robot he pilots which become success to japan so they created multiple one example is battle fever j , when marvel stanley never renew the contract with toei because of the unkown reason some say because marvel needs large profit some say because of focusing only on western , who knows what the reason is, so toei rebrand the show as super sentai, by the way this is stanly idea to create a super hero show in japan
@@BlankZone34 You still dont understand it existed before the Marvel deal.

How could y'all completely skip Zeo.🙄

Beetleborgs should have just filmed some cheap battle footage and ended the story, or make a film like the rangers to end the story why would you end on a cliffhanger if you knew chances of renewal were slim to none.
