1st time I turned on HL 1 and heard this theme it raised the hair on the back of my neck.. I had no idea what was going on, but I knew I loved it.
This screen never appeared for me on the first Half-Life. It did play in Surface Tension, though...

Nothing has really changed because time travel hasn't been invented, so the past I referred to is unchanged. Valve, regardless of its present, still owes everything it has to the original Half-Life.

The year is 2020. E3 has begun, and the room goes dark. This theme music begins to play, with brief flashes of past Half-Life games appearing and then fading on the monitor throughout the song. As the song ends, the Half-life 3 emblem appears on the monitor, and then fades slowly.
The crowd then goes insane.

Once everyone has quietened down after discussing what happened, this music plays and the Half Life logo with 3 in the corner appears on the screen.
But...all of a sudden, the lights are back on, HL3 logo disappeared, and Gabe said:
"Haha sorry, I was just kidding. There won't be Half-Life 3 at all..."

I'd imagine Gaben with his comrades just making the E3 rooms pitch black, 5 seconds later this song plays, with the first beat revealing the Lambda symbol with a 3 beside it.
The GMan would walk beside the Lambda and the 3 and begins saying:
"Well, Doctor Freeman, it's about that time I encounter you from your absence. But I can still offer you a job you would love to venture in it. Would you accept it, Doctor Freeman?"
With our first time hearing Gordon Freeman saying: "Well, Mister GMan, I guess it really *IS* the time I get back from my absence!"
And then Newell reveals the new Source engine, and the aftermath of Hλlf-Life 2: Episode 2. Which is "Hλlf-Life 3."

Half-Life chapter: Surface Tension...Freeman crawls through the pipes...he views several HECU jets fly past him...he hears an HECU soldier exclaim through the radio "Squad, quiet down." He sees the canyon, and must be careful. This was amazing...fitting for Valve to make one of the most memorable scenes in a computer game (at least for me anyway) the theme song of their company.

Valve has made some of the best games of the past 25 years, and their logo theme will never get old. It is a bit of a shame though for some of the younger players, cause when I first heard it and the image of the bald guy on the portal games, it freaked me out.

For me, this music always takes me back to emerging from the sewage drain to the cliffside as the jets fly by in HL1 back in 1998, it was such an incredibly cinematic moment
My testament has a phrase to play this song on my funeral.The actor is imagination, but the one I dreamed to be in this society of a projected future of a singularity dream that could become real after a next severe painful mistake.

I've been playing the original Half-Life again; this song starts playing when you crawl through a drainage pipe going out to the edge of a cliff, and a jet flies by. Even though it's a nearly 15 year-old game, I couldn't help but think how awesome and atmospheric it still is.
Half Life is back in march 2020.
Future historians will identify the lack of Half Life 3 as one of the critical events that started the irreversible decline of society.
