they really do underscore him to not mess with the scale cause his potential....its messed up, i think morgan still won but the scoring was not good or fair
Jjfs surfing is so good to watch, even in these conditions. If anyone was goin to beat him, I'm glad it was the young aussie. Though saying this, i didn't really think the crowd on the beach have to cheer when jjf didn't stick his air reverse.
Considering that Johns 13.16 was the second highest of the entire round of 32...to bad the first highest was Morgans 17.13, the judges scoring was not an issue for John. Crappy waves were more of the problem and Morgan is obviously accustomed to it as its his home break.
8:12 - Yeah, I'm sure it's the crowd cheering for Morgan rattled John so much that he fell on two air attempts. Jeez. He's a two-time world champ. I don't think the crowd is going to faze him.
No shame going down in those junky waves JJF. Morgan was on fire and caught the better of the waves with more turns and deserved to win this heat. But in my opinion, JJF style is more pleasing to watch.
Morgan first wave was bigger than John john’s and his vertical snaps were way more critical that’s why he got the higher score. Both had 4 manuevers but morgz was more critical on a larger wave.
I wholeheartedly agree with you. In saying that though, JJF turns we’re so much more intentional, creative and precise. Aside from the first turn on the 9, Morgan kind of threw his board up and the lip knocked it back down, his cutback also caught the rail and he staggered through it. In terms of judging, the style and true performance didn’t really factor in and clumsier surfing won.
Recovering from a injury the first couple of sessions can be good because you are so excited and motivated to get a wave but later on is definitely harder so big shout to JJ’s
How did he win? John did a better more committed turn on every wave he had than any of the turns on Cibilic's 9. Cibilic is a good surfer but the scoring seemed super off!
That was a clinic. John was rattled after the first exchange, that's why he went to the air. Without perfect wave selection he knew he wouldn't be able to compete on turns, in those small waves. The confidence that local knowledge brings was definitely a factor.
JJF can compete with anyone's rail game, even in small waves. His combination of power, style and variety is unmatched, no matter how small the waves are. I can agree he may have been a little rattled, but he also got unlucky as Morgan was just on the better waves (and definitely surfed them well). In a 30 minute heat it doesn't take much to lose; a couple of mistakes and unlucky wave decisions is enough, even for the best in the world.
