Well it's a bit complicated because this was a case of grooming where Aaron's was just plain abuse. Paul really believes (part of him anyway) that he had a romantic and sexual relationship with his abuser and that he consented to what happened.
It was only more extreme because Aaron was raped, not because of the self-harming. the thing Aaron's story and Paul's story have in common is they had a father figure who where a Pedophil. Aaron's story and Paul's story are very very different but both horrible in different waysand they both messed with their heads for the rest of their lives.
@@frankiehooper2985 Kal made Paul think it was okay to be in a sexual relationship with his father figure, it took Kal 3 years to whisper in Paul's ear enough to make Paul think he needed Kal above anyone else, to groom Paul so much as to make Paul wish his mom was dead and feel he would do anything for Kal, warp Paul's mind so much that the only person he could trust and love was Kal. That's why Paul took it so hard when Kal broke up with Paul, Kal made Paul so dependent on him that Paul didn't know what to do with himself after the break up. It wouldn't surprised me if Paul could have secretly felt suicidal at the time or that his violent behavior was his attempt at being noticed by Kal again, of course that last part is just me reading between the lines and not what was said on the show. but Kal never cared about Paul's feelings as long as he could get his rocks off with Paul both with the pictures of Paul from when he was 11 or with Paul when he was 14.
They were both horrible obviously but Aaron's was more extreme because his was done to him by his biological father beginning at the age of 8. The self-harm really has nothing to do with it.

I think it's more comparable to Maya-Jacob's affair than Aaron's abuse.
