This video and "Lou Reed", "Walk on the Wild Side" are 2 of the primest and best examples of how in the '80s WE JUST DIDN'T CARE about ones' sexuality in any shape, manner or form. They are both videos of "what is/was". What one "wore" on the "outside" was, indeed, a statement of your beliefs and personage. The biggest topic of "gayness" was which ear did you pierce if you were gay, that is it, period. The terms "gay" and "fag" had nothing to do with "gay" or "fag". Still in todays lexicon. We all knew as teenagers about fetishes, S and M,Crossdressing, you know.....the whole thing. Who gave a shit? Uhhh, no one. We had big hair, pastel clothes, Heavy Metal/GlamRock were just getting started. All we wanted to do was smoke copious amount of weed, drink beer and go to concerts. Peace and love all the way 'round. I don't even understand shit today, never thought I'd say those words, said I'd never say that I didn't understand today, but I am saying it and saddened by it. Priceless indeed. The way they instantly froze with their mouths open! I think knowing the difference between ‘come’ and ‘cum’ might have changed their whole expectations for this video..... lol I’m still laughing....
The original music video was banned in the US for many years. The record label for the band made a number of different substitute music videos to pass muster in various countries around the world.
As other people have mentioned, this is the first of four videos for this song that were made. This one was directed by Bernard Rose, who later did the original CANDYMAN horror film, along with a radical Beethoven biopic called IMMORTAL BELOVED with Gary Oldman as the composer. This was banned by both the BBC and MTV when the song first came out around 1983, so a no-frills studio performance video was made for those platforms. It was huge in the UK - was on the chart for 50 weeks - but didn't really break in America. Then, Brian DePalma used it in a crucial sequence for his 1984 thriller BODY DOUBLE, and brought the band in to act it out, and a video mixing those scenes with some original footage was released. The ironic thing is that DePalma really just restaged much of this video by Rose, but with more of a heterosexual tone to it, though he subverted that too by using drag performers to play the women. MTV would only play it at night because of the content. A few months after the movie came out, the song finally charted in America, so finally, a fourth video of them performing it live in concert was released as the song cracked the Billboard Top 40, and that video is notable because the band is surrounded by screaming girls, a probably calculated move by the record company to change the perception of the band, because the lead singers were gay and so there was prejudice about whether they had appeal to "straight" people.
I'm American & I don't remember whether I discovered the song in '83 or '84, but I definitely wore out my "Frankie Say Relax" t-shirt!!
