uhh quick math, it was 1987 when they got together and when dani left, it was 2000 because jamie said that their union was civil and that happened in 2000 so they did indeed spend 13 years together. perhaps longer since dani, even after going to the lake, is still with her, jamie just doesn’t know it.

"The lady in the lake was different now. The lady in the lake was also Dani. And Dani wouldn't. Dani would never."
Much like the ending of "Two Storms" from Hill House, that line was what utterly devastated me when I watched this. It's the perfect demonstration of the difference between love and possession, as Dani's sacrifice is done purely to protect Jamie, and even when Jamie begs to be taken too, Dani refuses to trap the woman she loves, and condemn her to that horrific watery fate. Compare that to Peter, who was so desperate to not be alone, and had such possessive feelings towards Rebecca that he trapped her too, and basically took her entire life away from her. It's such a beautifully poignant moment, and the perfect way to end this series

Didn't you see Dani's hand? At the end? On Jaime's shoulder? She's not the Lady in the Lake. She is with Jaime, has been for years, will be until they can be together again.
The name of the restaurant was "A Batter Place"
HILL HOUSE was about grief. BLY MANOR was about love.
If you pay very close attention, Dani and Jaime had thirteen years together. Because they lived in Vermont, which was the first state to accept same sex civil unions in 2000. And we know this wedding is taking place is 2007.
If Henry weren't a fundamentally good man, he never would have felt such crushing guilt. Ditto Dani.

  • @AnaFox
    @AnaFox 3 года назад +133

"I say we pause it. I say we never finish it." I feel you. I binged it so I had no idea what I was in for, other than that "hill house" had destroyed me so I knew to expect that. But it had had a somewhat happy ending so I had hope... And I guess this one does too, but omg it's so tragic it's hard to say it's "happy". I see now that binge or not, nothing truly prepares us for that final episode. It is so unbelievably tragic and beautiful. The solitude of Jamie hits a lot, though. Dani was selfless, unlike Peter, but because their love was NOT the wrong kind of love, Jamie never gave up on her, neither did Owen (on Hannah). So everyone we loved dearly either passed away or was left longing, remembering, appreciating what they had lived. But they all tried to protect the kids, and they succeeded and we know that would make them happy, and knowing that they would probably go through it all over again if they had the chance, and I'm crying again... Your reactions are beautiful, and even though it hurts to see you suffer, at least it's a way to show these characters all the love and respect that deserve. It was a great journey. Thank you.

Dani and Jamie give me much the same torrent of emotions as Bill and Frank from TLOU. That feeling of only getting so much time, of fighting against all odds to stay with the one you love, and that feeling of slowly losing your person. And yet it still feels like a triumph. It still feels like a whole life of love. There is grief and loss in the end, but still, you know it was worth it.

I'm sorry the end Made you so sad though; I did cry a bit too, but thought It was a rather bittersweet ending. Very much like real life. I think what I liked the least was that Flora and Miles didn't remember Jamie... It would've been nice to see them console each other over their losses, like a small loving family. But I think they all still kinda know: Owen knows in his soul Hannah loved him and keeps honoring her memory; the kids and their uncle know, although maybe unconciously, that they were loved and taken care of by some beautiful people; Jamie absolutely knows Dani did everything out of love, and is still with her even if she can't see her.

There was a lot of love stories on this show: Hannah and Owens, the love that never happened; Henry and Charlotte (Floras Mother) the love who was "wrong" and, still, they hadnt had the nerve to carry it on (they should, she wouldnt die on that trip... but they hadnt, cos world told they it was wrong), and Rebecca and Peter, the bandit love, the one who was really wrong, not cos the bandit on it, but cos the domination, the possession... this is a love who haunt you, and, wow, they were ghosts, right? ANNND... of course.. Flora and her new wedding husband, so affraid of losing each other cos pain, cos... what the old Owen said on first episode "you wont divorce so you will see each other die"...
NOW, Dany and Jamie, it was a pure, true love, built up on things they had together, problems they solved together, they were right the opposite of each other, still, respect each other, and you can say a lot of things about the end of this love... Dany was possessed? Ok... Dany was affraid of discrimination (cos they werte lesbians) and, on the end, said to herself "ok, I will take it all by myself and preserv Jamie"... ok too... or Dany had a fatal desease, she knew at some time it would take her over... most of it, a brain disease, that would make her not be her... "im losing myself, I cant feel, I cant rememmer"... I may even hurt you cos I dont know who you are anymnore (something that reminds us Owens mother suffering from dementia and Jamie sayin after the funeral "Jesus, just shoot me"... you recall this part?)
This is ALL ABOUT LOVE, in all, or almost all, its faces: pure, true (but unwilling, Like Hannah and Owens, I have this feeling she would never say "I Love You" to him if she was alive... cos things, cos her life, cos her shame or lack of guts to try again, she was hurt by her former husband who left her)), a good love but with fear of losing, of hurting, and a toxic love by Rebecca and Peter.
And, of course, the one of Uncle Henry and FLoras Mother, cos that love too... and Floras Mother and her husband, is it love? Hum, well, it ended in a tragedy, they died on a trip to ressurect a love who was, maybe, never there...
This show is about love, at least this season.. the past season was more like a family drama. I hope I see you both on next season (The Fall of House of Usher) who is about to come in. Lets see what is it about together, shall we?
Love your reaction, you both are great ;-)

    What could really have happened?
    An alternative, realistic variant.
Please keep in mind that the whole story of Bly Manor is told by an unreliable narrator. Someone who has experienced the least of it herself and knows what she knows only from Dani, who was extremely unstable herself.
The nanny suffered terrible delusions and psychosis after the traumatic death of her fiancé. She took refuge in a ghost story to explain her trauma. She got better for a few years, and Jamie and Dani lived happily together until Dani fell into severe depression and eventually took her own life. Presumably she committed suicide in a bathtub, which is explained by her connection to water in Jamie's story.
Just like Dani, Jamie then spins a ghost story together to cope with and explain the death of her great love.
Dani may have done almost exactly the same thing as with Owen's mother. She disappeared more and more every day. Dani finally left a farewell letter and took her own life in her bathtub. To keep it sound like a geiser story because it's supposed to be a classic geiser story, Jamie came up with the rest to make the whole story sound appropriate to others and maybe to himself. Because the truth would be much worse. Because that happens every day in real life when people become mentally ill or Alzheimer's.
So it is not a ghost story, but a story about the slow decay of the mind, i.e. the psyche.

Gothic Romance, go figure - unrequited love mixed with tragedy. I have loved your reactions to both this and Hill House. For myself Hill House is a much better series. I found myself getting pulled out of Bly by the echoes from Hill House. The piece of music, the "ghost" hovering over the couch, the next to the last episode focusing on the main story, hidden ghosts, "the rest is just....". I find it hard to believe the children have forgotten what happened - I mean Flora saw her Uncle all but killed in front of her, seeing Peter killed in front of them, I just find that hard to buy into.
Russian Doll is a quirky time loop story, very well done that I think you two would enjoy. Peaky Blinders or What We Do In The Shadows (vampire comedy) would be fun for you as well.

It is very common in horror stories involving young children that when they grow up and become adults they forget the terrible things that happened to them when they were young - especially when they defeat the monster or whatever it was that causing the terrible things. Stephen King's IT, for example.
