    Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Classics, the series where we take a sensible classic car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time, we celebrate the fourth year anniversary of the channel as we test a 1974 Triumph Dolomite 1850, similar to the 1980 Triumph Dolomite 1500 SE I used to own in around 2005. Join us as I get overtaken on a dual carriageway, negotiate a series of roundabouts in Milton Keynes, talk about Lewis Collins' cars from The Professionals and generally experience little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward then!

    I must say, the cars in the background make an excellent backdrop. 😍

    I had a used 1850HL in that same colour in the early 80s, mine had lighter colour interior. the overdrive could be used in both 3rd and top gear, loved it. Back when Britain was still great { just about }.

      Yes, this a pre HL, and so the interior is a bit different. Thank you ever so much indeed for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it.

      Thank you ever so much indeed for watching and commenting! This car has now had the issue with the carburettor resolved where it was not running right on the day.

    Great proportions in every way. The Dolly looks right, feels right and performs with dignity. The manual steering is unmatched. But then we have to remember that we were comparing them with boats like Austin Cambridges and the like.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад

      Oh yes, when this came out the Morris Oxford Series VI had only just been discontinued! This didn't quite have the full amount of power, and I think needs the carburettor checking and cleaning, but still an amazing design and the steering is lovely.

    Mr Bodie had made a very informed choice with a Dolomite Sprint because this 1850 seems well able to handle plenty more power.
    It is really great that you had an enjoyable and nostalgic time with the Dolomite.
    Who knows if things had turned out differently in the Mid Seventies and Triumph had been chosen as the Luxury Executive in the BL Empire instead of the Rover SD1, you might not be driving a Rover 45 V6. It could be a Triumph Six Cylinder saloon.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  2 года назад

      That's right, sir! Could have easily been Triumph continuing as a marque rather than MG or Rover if those customer clinics used during the research for the SD3 had not preferred the Rover name. This car was down on power a bit (the owner and I discussed that after I had driven it), but it was still a lot of fun!

    • @briancoleman6990
      @briancoleman6990 Месяц назад +1

      And British consumers may have remained loyal rather than going to BMW and Audi. Though the SD1 was and remains a great car.

      @@briancoleman6990 yes I travelled in an original SD1 3500 along a very slippery muddy track to the World Ploughing Championships, a 1978 2300 manual and a 1982 2600 Automatic and I could not fault any of them. Very spacious interior, modern, luxurious, quiet and a very smooth absorbing ride. Oh and great seats.

      @@seancooke7332 Yes and still looks modern from every angle and part of a single design. Testament to the great Dave Bache . I followed a Moonraker Blue one the other day. Unlike the modern hatchback BMWs and Audis that look as though the rear end designers never met the front end designers or if they did it was in the pub after 5 pints

    My father had an auto 1850. Some other driver hit it and the insurance company provided him with a courtesy car .... An Acclaim. He couldn't drive it because it was a manual so I chauffeured him everywhere. What a revellation! The steering was superb. The g/box was light and accurate, the engine smooth and willing. The ride and handling were in a different league. In truth the 1850 engine was a dog. Twice I replaced the head gasket and once the pump. The steering was just OK but the ride was lumpy. The interior was lovely whereas the Acclaim's was awful. The Acclaim had the least warranty claims of any BL/BMC car that preceded it. I have its sucessor .... An R8 416 Tourer.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Год назад +1

      This Dolomite was a bit down on power, which we think is something to do with the carb (it felt significantly slower than my old 1500), so I am going to try an 1850 Automatic at some point, which has also been offered to me for review. That one also has the advantage of being much easier to put into reverse than this one.

    What an interesting history! I did not realise that rear wheel drive was intrinsically cheaper than front wheel drive.
