Stride piano was an enormous influence on American music. For instance, that style was used in parlor guitar in the 19th Century, was carried forward by Kennedy Jones to Merle Travis, Chet Atkins and has influence many modern rock guitarists. For instance, Mark Knopfler. It also set the basis for modern piano styles but the bass started to emphasize the beats and the left hand was rhythmically more complex. It is long past being a widely popular style of playing so a musician that wants to perform for the broadest audiences would not choose that style. In fact, few people even know of it. That she would choose to devote so much of her life and energy to this marvelous and important style of music is an astounding and a wonderful thing for us all. I discovered her by accident googling for examples of stride so a friend could hear it. I immediately bought all her CDs (and, I confess, fell in love with her :-)). I am pretty sure I have everything Fats Waller ever recorded and comparing is silly. Her being her and doing it is even more than the music (which I love).
Extremely well done with a left hand that really captures the feel of this style. You actually get better at the rhythms as you get into it.Only a "handful" of players can do this .. My Dad who is 101 years and plays piano saw Fats in person and loved him. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Holy Cow, Ii's very rare that people can say that they got to meet fats in person. Meeting him is one of my biggest dreams, although I'm kinda late for that now... God bless you and your dad, take care.
It looks so easy. But that pace. And no failures at all. Amazing. Incredible. But most important: You have Your own style. Close, but not too close to Fats Waller's famous record made in 1929!
What a talent. Listen people! You can listen just for the pure enjoyment of it. If you feel you have to be critical .... keep it to yourself! This is happy music and this girl is GREAT!
So happy to see & hear such a young, talented and beautiful young lady playing stride piano so well and helping to keep this great art form of piano alive. Thank You sweet Stephanie and never stop playing!
Just heard her yesterday in Sedalia (Scott Joplin International Festival) and she blew us away. Just gets better and better. And what a beauty, too. All, a great treat!
I'm 63 and my father was a Ragtime piano player in a band in london Ontario. I grew up with this music and I love it. I'm a bif fan of Terry Waldo who plays this music in New Orleans. Thanks
My first time seeing her last week, she is very talented and beautiful at the same time! Hope to see more shows of her in the near future. Truly gifted, keep it up Stephanie! Don't let this kind of music die! :)
Well done. I posted myself playing Handful of Keys a while ago and I am thrilled that someone your age has got the spirit and rhythm of this music. Great
The music is in this young woman's soul. She loves it enough to feel the energy it is meant to evoke. Fat's is no doubt giving her the coaching it takes to give his music justice.
Wow, the flip side of Viper Drag. Very groovy! Ms. Trick, you have a sufficiently mean left hand to lay me out till next Tuesday and your right hand tickles my lobes so sweetly they may never recover. If you can SING, I think I will faint.
I was just about to say the same thing. With those delicate fingers and hands she get clear and intense sounds. And the intensity of both hands is perfect. Just like Fats. Awesome. I can´t believe what im hearing. I wish I could play like this. Dream on.
Handful of Keys is one of my all time favorite songs...and I hate to admit that I'm a bit picky when it comes to hearing others outside of Waller. What a great version this is though! Very nicely done..Thanks so much for sharing!
I sat and listened to her playing different songs for an hour after hearing this!!! And also where can you get the piano sheet music for this song...I have looked everywhere and cannot find it?!?!
Wow, excellent interpretation I found that this version is more interesting than Paul Posnak's transcription. Please, where can I find the sheets corresponding to your interpretation. Thanks
How wonderful of you to remember Fats Waller, “the black Horowitz”. Today, May 21st 2016 is the 102nd anniversary of his birth. Please check out my youtube channel honoring Fats and other great African-American musicians like Ernest Hogan, “father of ragtime”; Robert Johnson, “king of the Delta blues singers” Sidney Bechet (the first notable jazz saxophonist); and James Brown, godfather of soul - all born in the month of May.
Great playing and especially for such a young person! Ever play any of the pieces by Zez Confrey? They seem even MORE difficult than Wallers. Pieces like his "Kitten on the Keys" and "Dizzy Fingers."
Now that's a great one. Off to my playlist you go, well done! Love the tonal accents! (is that the right term? Dunno how to translate from one instrument and language to another here, but I'm just a dilettante anyway.)
Fascinating. I'm a student of piano and studying this piece, and let me say, to play it at Fats' tempo, with the same clarity and feel, puts this one as difficult as one of Liszt's harder Transcendental Etudes!
