    We gig about 8-10 graves a year at a small cemetery about 4 miles in a small town about 4 miles east of the town I live in.We just load the excess dirt on our Dodge 1 ton 4x4 97 flat bed. Then we push it off with a backhoe. We have 1 Case 580 Super L 4x4 and 2-580 Super M 4x4 one 580M is a .extendahoe we use a 3” heavy duty trenching bucket. We don’t have any rock.

      Always good to hear from another gravedigger about their experiences. Consider yourself fortunate there’s no rock where you dig. We have several areas with solid rock, it’s a beast to manage. Thanks for watching!

    Believe it or not but some funeral homes still dig graves by hand and back fill the grave by hand. Tamping the dirt around the vault or casket is also done by hand. The chance of a grave caving in or washing out is much less when done by hand.

      There are so many different types of soil in here. Some of the hillsides are nice plush topsoil, some areas have rock, some have no end of roots. I love digging the hills because the dirt is very cooperative. Thanks for watching!

    Late 90s early 2000 i worked as a care taker for a cemetery then got job working for a excavating co still digging graves. We dug a and backfilled a few by hand and it was a nightmare. Most of those was for mennonites. Enjoyed digging graves but rather dig for new homes lol

      @CemeteryShop-yg6gi  5 месяцев назад +2

      We love what we do, but you’re right about hand digging. It’s brutal, we couldn’t keep any legitimate schedule that way. Thanks for watching!

    I had a Case 480 C think mine was in 86 I never cared for how the hydraulic piston was mounted on the side of the boom I think it's the Dipper it had broke a couple of times, I had to have it welded, but the 580 had it on both sides

    • @CemeteryShop-yg6gi
      @CemeteryShop-yg6gi  Месяц назад

      It’s a nice basic tool. Any heavier than this and we’d be caving in the old wooden vaults from years ago when there weren’t any standards. About that enclosed cab, they’re nice but heavy, and they eliminate the ability to effectively communicate with the ground guy. Thanks for watching!

    What is the advantage of of a such short sided bucket.

    • @CemeteryShop-yg6gi
      @CemeteryShop-yg6gi  4 месяца назад +1

      The main advantage of this particular bucket is the width. It’s four ft. To exactly match the width of the grave so we don’t end up crooked. It really holds plenty of dirt the way it is. Any more dirt would actually be a disadvantage when loading the small dump bed of the Kubota RTV on steep hillsides. Thanks for watching!

    Now won't someone think that the Turnner is buried there since their headstone faces over your new grave. I do genealogy and if I were standing at what I would think was the foot end, that's just what I as many people would think. Cause that name faces that hole.

    • @CemeteryShop-yg6gi
      @CemeteryShop-yg6gi  7 месяцев назад +1

      The marker you see there is at the foot of another grave. We typically place the single markers at the foot, doubles and monuments go at the head. Thanks for watching!

  • @ShannonSmith-ss1bd
    @ShannonSmith-ss1bd 6 месяцев назад +1

    Why do they use a short sided bucket and not a a dare 3’ bucket.

    • @CemeteryShop-yg6gi
      @CemeteryShop-yg6gi  6 месяцев назад +1

      We use a gravedigger bucket specifically designed for the job. It’s exactly the width of the grave so we don’t have to reset the backhoe to get a strait line on the sides. Also, the bucket bring wider than a ditch bucket means we can get a lot of dirt out with each scoop. A ditch bucket also doesn’t cut the ends straight down like a grave bucket. This is the right tool. Thanks for watching!
