I just turned 63. I've only been taking ballet for 5 years, but love it. I dance and perform several other dances, and the ballet training has made me so much better in all of them. Like Wendy and others here, I work to try and get better and do as much as I can while not overdoing it and injuring myself. The video inspires me to keep on keeping on.
@@tapiwamachaya8372 I started dancing ballet at 33. Now I’m 37. Of course I can’t do a huge amount of things but I’m more flexible now than when I started. I’m stronger too, my legs have more muscle so it has helped me with my knees. That’s my update for the moment.
@@angelacamargo4309 ditto I started at 47 and now at 51 (closing in on 52), I'm more flexible, stronger, more balanced. . .all those things which make aging easier. I do ballet 5 days a week(about 7 1/2 hours) and I love it more each time.
It's so amazing to see how her movement has changed, adapted, and developed since doing more modern and contemporary styles. What an incredible artist, athlete, and person.
wow. "It took me four years to get out of pain" -- had a similar story - suddenly I developed all kinds of pain in my back - I'm on year four now, been doing ballet for about 2 & the ballet is helping a lot. I'm 52 and I was also one of those people who thought I would escape the effects of aging. Good to see her story.
I feel you--I thought I would stay strong and super-flexible forever. Didn't quite work out that way, lol! But I do what I can. I have studied ballet since age 6, and I think it's the best exercise ever, but be sure not to overdo. It's easy to hurt yourself in ballet, especially when you're older (I'm 50, and I've had to slow down a lot). Concentrate on strength, balance, and flexibility rather than tricks--it's wonderful to perform an amazing grand jete or cabriole, but the risk of injury isn't worth it. Be graceful, be beautiful, and, above all, be happy!
It is always inspiring to see a dancer with real tenure. With absolute staying power. Dancers notoriously have such criminally short careers. But when you see someone like Margot Fonteyn or Mikhail Baryshnikov… or Wendy here… You know ballet isn’t just a young person’s game. It’s inspiring!
I'm so glad she did well with her hip replacement as I am having a knee replacement soon, and I'm not even a dancer. I have read the bios of many Balanchine dancers and a large number have had hip problems and hip replacements. That is why I think it is tough on the body in the long run. Wendy has such a wonderful attitude. I spoke to her once at a ballet - we were both in the audience. She is a lovely person, and now she has a responsible position in administration at NYCBallet.
Wendy Whelan is wise, and she became wise through experience, through living, through dancing. I'm so glad she is feeling well after the hip replacement, a not uncommon thing among NYCB dancers. Balanchine is tough on the body.
She is such an incredible name in the ballet industry; cannot think of any other female principle who went as long as she did in a major ballet company. Crossing my fingers that she gets the director position at NYCB soon!
Margot Fonteyn in the U.K.. her career from middle-age was revitalised from her collaboration with Nureyev. She danced Juliet with him at age 45 (& her superb acting ability made one believe she was a teenage girl)!
thank you so much for this video and the inspiring words. Me, 47, still doing professional fire shows and aerial acrobatics for my income and live. I still love how my body works, but to hold the level it gets harder. Also there is a lot of pressure in the industry to be young and sexy. I want to know, how far I can go with my body and work.
Wendy Whelan should be named in the video title. She deserves to be named and not only because she is so famous . People who disagree, your attempts to psychoanalyze the writers are laughable.
You have to really warm up alot when you are mature and do what you can without hurting yourself and ballet really pushes the body to extreme you can still enjoy dance at a different level this video is very inspiring ♥️
@@d.lawrence5670 Asians don't age well. Wendy looks like she is in her early forties, she looks good. I have seen a lot wrinkled Asians, black folks not so much.
The good thing about ballet is that it can easily be ratcheted down to conform to what an older body can do. At age 61, I can do small jumps, but I would never try big ones for example. I can still turn and lift my legs, except to the rear....back hurts too much to force my leg up to the rear, but I can do it slowly.
She doesn't 50 yrs old at all, what she says is really interesting. We're only human and at some point our body needs to be really really taken care of.
And now , in 2019, Wendy Whelan will be co director of New York City Ballet!
Wow! So well deserved, she'll KNOW what she's doing!
Please let her do some major changes, starting with commissioning new ballets!
Thanks for mentioning her name.
The NYC choose her as the director well
She is such an inspiration.

I don’t believe you at all,no offense
@@tapiwamachaya8372 your remark is offensive to all who strive to improve in activities they love.
@ Tapiwa Machaya. My mother started dancing at 55. People take on new hobies

That's Wendy Whelan, former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet (she retired in '14).
Wendy Whelan. She is stunning!

Why is not uncommon?
Many dancers have hip problems including tap dancers !!!

Almost all professional dancers have knee or hip problems. It's a tough gig mentally and physically
to be able to move like that..so effortlessly and with such grace..beautiful
Thank you for being honest and open about this. Glad you made it through! Keep going strong!
What an amazing woman. I would never have guessed her at 50. Holy cow. 40 at most.
She does not look 50! God bless her!
I think she does, but she also looks beautiful and elegant still.

I will I thought I was too old to start dancing at 36❤️❤️❤️❤️

50!!? She looks like she's possibly 37!!
I think most ballerinas have beautiful jawline and neck for their age...

Well I think you're amazing
I hate the fact that she just dismissed ageism as something acceptable. It's not acceptable. It doesn't "come with the territory".
How did her feet hold up? A ballet career can be really rough on the feet......
