Good review. I got the black and red one with positive display. Is still dimmer than other G-Shocks because of the dual layer LCD but still legible, because of the large digits. I like it.
This is the best review I saw about this watch on YT. Long detailed and in depth talk about every detail. great video. Definitely deserve more subs, keep it up!
I have never really had a problem with the negative display. Usually works well in bright Sun and fluorescent lighting or by dashboard lights. I ordered green too. Fantastic looking. I like that it is not a radio receiver or Bluetooth connected, that is what I have been asking for from Casio. I’ll set it against my Mudmaster watches before I go out. Casio really has wonderful style. These watches look tough and are the toughest watches out there. The watch I wore to combat 11 years ago, still works great. They are also responsibly priced for all the sensors and accuracy. The barometer feature is incredibly useful when you are tracking fast weather shifts hiking or driving. Casio watches are the best tool I own.
Good review - I have had the ProTrek PRW-3500-1CR regular display since 2018 and the PRG-300-7CR with the reverse display since 2016. Both are running fine, essentially G-Shocks with the Alti/Baro/Compass functionality. Prices have gone up since I bought mine, but they have been tanks and I've even grown to like the reverse display, but it took me a while. The regular display is much, much easier to read. Beyond that, they are essentially exactly the same watch as your Mudman. I wish the Mudman cost less, I'd consider adding it to the rotation. I use the baro a lot because I live near the Rocky Mountains and the weather changes rapidly. It's invaluable. For about $20 US, you can pick up an Illuminator that essentially is the same watch without the 3 band dealio, and a cheap plastic crystal. I bought two and both have survived a baby labrador happily nomming on them for several months, so that's something to keep in mind if you're looking for affordable durability. :)
I would absolutely buy the green one in a heartbeat if it had a positive display. I still might if I can find someone well versed enough in Casio modding to remove and replace the polarizing film so it's positive. Thanks for the great overview!

Great review. I have the positive display version and I’m impressed with it. I’m thinking of getting the black and red negative display too, just because I really like the look of it. It will be of outdoor summer use though as I expect the display to be a bit difficult to see.

I've just bought the GW-9500 but in Black with the positive display . I did look at the Green one bu the display stopped me having seen other watches with that display and the comment that it was difficult to read.
The GD-350 in negative is really really readable, so in theory this GW9500 should be even more so, being larger. But everyone says no it isn't. I guess I'm going to avoid negative for now, but I'm curious if any GD-350 owners have comment.
I haven't used the GD-350. Do you happen to know how large the bezel is around the watch? My guess is this watch suffers from a few issues. I think the dual layer of the second compass over lay glass affects the light coming, plus I think the size the thickness of the bezel around the screen reduces extra light from flooding in. The display does seem to sit unusually far behind the glass. I think there's a few contributing factors that have lead to the pure readability with this one. I have several other neg display watches from Casio and they're super easy to read. Ultimately they should have gone MIP with this model. They have the tech now and it need to be used everywhere they can get it What are your thoughts? Great comment by the way 🖖 Thanks for watching
@@MoorlanderEDC I don't think the bezel matters much unless there's a surround right next to it (like on the 9300 mudman which is terrible). You're probably right, it's the dual layer, both the depth and the refraction.
Question concerning my G-Shock GW9500-1 Mud Master watch. I am in Tennessee so my World Time is set up in UTC but it appears my Sunrise/Sunset times are off by one hour. How can I fix this?

Do you know if Rangeman GPR B1000 will get successor soon as well, where I am waiting for. Nice video, well done, my favourite is the black with positive display.
Unlikely, since it didn't do too well for Casio. The issue with the high end Master of G watches is that they don't tend to sell that well, even ones that have amazing features. The only outlier is the GWG-1000, which can still be bought, after 8 years of production.
Thanks for your great review. I bought the green Mudman and I love it’s design, including the black negative display. Yes, it’s difficult to read in the dark, but so is my Rolex Submariner. At least it has the great light function. 😜 The features are basically all known from other Casio watches. This is no surprise. The old Rangeman also had the same features as the ProTrek PRW-3500-1. I love this Mudman for having a modern display with large digits, but being a nice looking „real“ G-Shock. 🤩
Good evening bud I hope you're keeping safe and well, I have the original mudman and have battered it literally and it's still going. It's a shame about the version you have reviewed concerning the display etc, give it a year and they will release different versions.
I like my Rangeman. A lot are saying the Mudman is more a Rangeman. Do you agree? Ultimately, I prefer an analog/digital combo so the Mudmaster may be my distant purchase.
100% agree. The more I think about this watch the more I feel its just an expensive re-skin. I'd have been happier if they're made an update to the original G9000.
Yep, it's basically a new Rangeman. It's an unofficial successor to the GW-9400 since it has the exact same set of features. The GW-9300 Mudman had a moon graph, which this one lacks.
@FiremanFrach I definitely recommend getting the Mudmaster over this new Mudman since you already have the GW-9400. There are two premium versions of the Mudmaster, the GWG-1000 and GWG-2000. I recently got the older GWG-1000, as I feel that it has a much more rugged design, but you may prefer the newer GWG-2000.
I've always wanted a Protrek/G-Shock hybrid. I didn't think it would be poorly implemented. I have a Protrek PRW-3510 with the negative display and it's not that bad. Definitely not as bad as this. Probably that dual-layer LCD which screwed everything up. Also that model was nearly half the price as this. I may pick this up if it decreases in price over a year. I really can't justify spending $400 for this. It's a shame.
Hi fella, I agree. I'd like to see them go back to the origins of the Mudman series. I'm probably going to send this back and have enough cash to buy three more watches to review 😂
@@MoorlanderEDC The main issue is that LCDs work by polarisation, and the problem with polarisation is that they will block out light no matter on or off (just to a different degree). Its the same as how those privacy filters work on phones or screens. This problem is probably made worse by having the solar panel add depth, spacing between the two LCDs (this watch has 2 layers) to aid in shock protection, and also the fact you have 2 panels. In this watch, the outer compass LCD literally acts like a privacy filter (just with less blockage), hence the bad display angles. I think the concept was great, in terms of dial usage etc, BUT i think it would be better if they brought back the screen of the GPR-B1000, or just make an MIP display.
I agree the negative display is difficult to read. You can modify it to positive though. It’s just a piece of polarising film that makes it negative. Buy some replacement film, rotate it until you get the right display, cut it to shape and stick it down. Lots of RUclips videos showing GShocks being swapped from positive to negative and vice versa. You do need the film to see any type of LCD display though. Simply removing it will not show any display at all.
I've watched a tear down and it's a positive display with a negative film in there. Looks reasonably easy to remove but you have to take apart pretty much the entire watch
@@MoorlanderEDC Just another thought -- there's a setting somewhere in there that will cause the watch light to turn on when you rotate it toward yourself, illuminating the display. That might help make the display more tolerable and help you retain the waterproofing/warranty on the watch.
The casio with the old negative display it's a No No for me. BTW, you have an alarm on the Baro like u have on the suunto core. to activate the baro alarm, u need to push the button baro for few seconds till Baro appear on the watch, Too expensive for a ProTrek I mean G shock!
You're the only person I've seen so far who has talked about the Barometer alarm, it's good to know that this Mudman isn't missing this incredibly useful feature.
I think so yes. This is Casio doing what they do best with straps. They've put out so many watches recently where they've put zero thought into the strap. I hope they continue using some creativity with them like this. Hope you're well Paul 🙌
the lcd look a lot like protrek... thank god they made the basic black with positive display. under 50mm case size would be great. thank you for this video sir.
Even the positive display is terrible, much worse than other positive display G-Shocks. The duplex LCD is the culprit, it drastically increases reflection and makes the display hardly legible under certain lighting conditions. If the numbers weren't big, it would probably be the worst display ever made on a G-Shock.
negative display is OK, but only if it is STN or MIP LCD. I see no reason to buy survival watch and in harsh dusty condition have issues to ready the display.
Casio need to pull their finger out and get MIP on all their new models. Especially because there'll be other brands out there truing the same. Casio have a huge hold of the market but we've all see strong brands lose their foothold resting on their lorrels
@@atomicfrijole7542 This Mudman lacks a raised bezel, since they reduced the overall thickness of the watch considerably. I'd recommend a tempered glass screen protector.
Saw the ad for this watch and looked into it.....ended up going with the Rangeman GW-9400 instead. While I like how it is less thick the price is far too high and the displays aren't as good as I wanted.
GW-9400 has a fatal flaw with its lug design, unlike this Mudman. Trying to fix that issue would require the entire watch case to be replaced, which costs the same as a brand new Rangeman. My biggest issue is the way the display is laid out on the Mudman, as it's so much more well thought out on the GW-9400.
@@MrCarpen7er I see complaints pop up about it every year on WatchUSeek and Reddit, so it's not exactly a "stupid argument". I don't see any other complaints for other popular Master of G watches like the Frogman or Mudmaster, so it doesn't exactly take a genius to figure out there's an inherent issue with the GW-9400. I'm not saying anything bad about the functionality, as there's nothing to fault there. No need to get defensive about it, I just wish that Casio made a studier version of the GW-9400, similar in construction to this new Mudman.
Great review. I totally agree with your comments regarding negative displays. IMHO they're style over function and my main reason for buying a watch is tj read the time as easily as possible and the negative display models are a PITA. The combination of a larger display and the black model with the positive display are the one I'll be going for. As I said initially, a great review and nice to hear someone with an English accent for a change.
I have the ggb100 with has the positive screen I have had it for nearly a year i do have battery Anxiety, so the solar charging does sound good for me I also have a couple of Casio with a Negative screen Which are hard to see
Better off just getting the GBD 100, GBD 200, GBD H2000 or GPR-H1000 Rangeman for that sharp MIP display until they fix the GW 9500's display for the next wave. Those doesn't have this sort of issue because they don't have screen layers upon layers because of certain functions. It's really unacceptable at this price to have this sort of issue. The positive display is very dim too.
This watch lacks - at least - four things: 1. MIP display 2. Vibration alarm 3. A countdown timer setting for seconds 4. DD/MM settings. All this and TONS more you can get in a Garmin Instinct 2 solar for a lot less cash. It's no wonder why Casio sales drop while others rise like crazy.
I just don't do negative displays. And that display is... what's the word I'm looking for... plain...clean, yes maybe too clean. One of the cool things of Casio are the little doo dads on the watch face and this is missing it says the owner of an AE1500 with an even cleaner display albeit positive lol. Great color though, would wait a year or two, or just buy a ProTrek. Or Rangeman, mmm, yes that's way cool.
there are jobs that ban wireless devices within their facilities and others where computer connectivity isn't readily available and thus would just be a drain on the battery. "dumb" watches are still very useful.
I sold my Rangeman to buy a Mudmaster, I may have to sell that to buy one of these. As much as I enjoy your channel and the reviews you cost me far to much money.
Two things that Casio haven't gotten right from the beginning. 1, their back light, especially on their analog models. 2, their negative LCD display models,.... absolute RUBISH! I just don't understand how a company that's been around for over 40 years and is a huge success can be so ignorant about these issues.
I think it's because we're all suckers for punishment. I think as well Casio should have maybe made more models with the positive display. It's strange they didn't do more consumer testing before releasing
I though tough solar meant no battery. They have a capacitor that light chg up and can hold it for 4 mo of so. At least my citizen tough solar has no battery and never needs anything but light. Not paying that much for any watch. ❤
I like that they kept the digital display it keeps the charm and the positive is not that hard to read ,MIP is good but for more future up to date take I go with OLED then it’s a smart watch again the apple is better at this thing , hope they keep the g shock the way it is and update the sensors like GPS and More environmental sensors may be positional breadcrum navigation and features like parachute jumping assistance and night vision operations capabilities would be a nice upgrade Anyway Mudman gender neutral hahah 😂

Can the day/date be change to day month year, like in EU, not USA
I don't think it can with this model. It's annoying isn't it 😒
@ indeed the 5610u is the keeper than, might pass on the 9500
good video . beautifull watch the new Protek G-Shock of Casio. Greeting
Good evening bud I hope you're keeping safe and well, I have the original mudman and have battered it literally and it's still going. It's a shame about the version you have reviewed concerning the display etc, give it a year and they will release different versions.
Yep, I wish the stayed true a bit more to their original roots with the Mudman
What's the price and where can't I by it.👍
Hello. Here in the UK they're £350. I've left a link in the description below
@@StardustLegacyFighter Thanks. 👍🏻 Love my current Rangeman.
The Rangeman GW9400 was a protrek G-Shock hybrid.......
@@MoorlanderEDC Not really, the module wasn't taken from a pro trek, unlike what Casio has done for this Mudman.
Have you reviewed the Earth edition G-Shock?
I haven't no. I was today years old when I found out about this. I'll check it out 👍
Just ordered one in the sale, £175 new with next day delivery
Seriously? That's a great price. That's a bargain for sure
I saw how bad the display was in person, went to get the GW-9400. And yes, the viewing angles on the positive display is kinda crap too.
Oh seriously? That's not good in the positive display. I think it's a few things that have contributed to it. Shame really
Sorry, forgot to ask about the diameter of the inside ring showing the information, and would you buy the positive display version Many thanks.
Hi Terry, I'm not sure, sorry. I returned this watch
@@MoorlanderEDCThank you for the reply
Hi, nice review. Can you hear vthe alarms?
I tried the alarm before returning it and it's roughly the same volume as other Casio watches
@@MoorlanderEDC As I thought - useless
Thanks for the heads up on the Baro alarm 👍
You're the only person I've seen so far who has talked about the Barometer alarm, it's good to know that this Mudman isn't missing this incredibly useful feature.
On the strap section, it seems to be the same strap as the latest mud master, great strap!
I think so yes. This is Casio doing what they do best with straps. They've put out so many watches recently where they've put zero thought into the strap. I hope they continue using some creativity with them like this. Hope you're well Paul 🙌
@@MoorlanderEDC It's good that it has the lug design of the Mudmaster, instead of the crappy one from the GW-9400.
the lcd look a lot like protrek... thank god they made the basic black with positive display. under 50mm case size would be great. thank you for this video sir.
@@StardustLegacyFighter agreed! 👍
nice review
Glad you enjoyed it
negative display is OK, but only if it is STN or MIP LCD.
I see no reason to buy survival watch and in harsh dusty condition have issues to ready the display.
Facts, but honestly nothing will change unless G-Shock fanatics stop buying watches with TN negative display LCDs.
Casio need to pull their finger out and get MIP on all their new models. Especially because there'll be other brands out there truing the same. Casio have a huge hold of the market but we've all see strong brands lose their foothold resting on their lorrels
Is it sapphire glass or mineral
Dang it... Should have mentioned that. It's standard hardened mineral 👍
Mineral but it's pretty hard. Mine have held up quite well over the years. The raised beveled edge around the display makes a huge difference.
@@StardustLegacyFighter There are no lug problems with the Rangeman for years and years, That stupid years argument is beyond annoying !!!
Thanks Robert. I definitely appreciate the kind words there 🤙 hope you're well my friend and having a great weekend so far
I have the ggb100 with has the positive screen I have had it for nearly a year i do have battery Anxiety, so the solar charging does sound good for me I also have a couple of Casio with a Negative screen
Which are hard to see
Better off just getting the GBD 100, GBD 200, GBD H2000 or GPR-H1000 Rangeman for that sharp MIP display until they fix the GW 9500's display for the next wave. Those doesn't have this sort of issue because they don't have screen layers upon layers because of certain functions. It's really unacceptable at this price to have this sort of issue. The positive display is very dim too.
This watch lacks - at least - four things:
1. MIP display
2. Vibration alarm
3. A countdown timer setting for seconds
GW-9400 sounds like it has the display you need, but I honestly can't recommend that watch without mentioning the lug issues.
This green Mudman is probably designed for stealth, military use, so the display does not show up unnecessary in the dark or bush.
there are jobs that ban wireless devices within their facilities and others where computer connectivity isn't readily available and thus would just be a drain on the battery. "dumb" watches are still very useful.
The display is brutal.
The positive display is the better option, but I'm still not happy with the layout of the display.
Too many inconsistencies, sticking to our Timex. Cheers mate.!
I'm genuinely curious, but what exactly does Timex have that comes close to this Mudman?
I sold my Rangeman to buy a Mudmaster, I may have to sell that to buy one of these. As much as I enjoy your channel and the reviews you cost me far to much money.
Keep the Mudmaster, and just get this Mudman to accompany it. 😎
@@StardustLegacyFighter I like your thinking.
Why would you want to view this display in the dark? Do you really mean in the daylight?
Possibly 😂 I should probably script my videos as I often get stuff the wrong was around
Two things that Casio haven't gotten right from the beginning. 1, their back light, especially on their analog models. 2, their negative LCD display models,.... absolute RUBISH! I just don't understand how a company that's been around for over 40 years and is a huge success can be so ignorant about these issues.
Scraping MB6 would be really effing dumb imo..
Ill stick with my Rangeman GW9400!
Yep... Me too
@@MP-xd7jf um no but why do you need that
@@davefool6815 as with all watches, the real question is why not😂

Great video 👍 this is a hard pass for me. Imo terrible new rangeman/mudman
Understandable. It definitely has left me split
No Thanks, I will pass on this one due to the issues outlined
Another W video
Good with the normal (positive) display. Too hard to read with the the negative display unfortunately 😢
Still gonna get me the green one soon
I'm an adult and have my watch in 24h mode. If I give this to a child I set to to 12h mode.
Americans are in shambles 😂
I always make sure to add that about 24hrs. Hopefully everybody realised it's harmless banter... if not, it separates the wheat from the chaff :D
@@MoorlanderEDC Well... you made me do it... I got me the GW-9500KJ-3JR
Every review says the negative display is harder to read yet every review is of the negative display. Why is that?
I think it's because we're all suckers for punishment. I think as well Casio should have maybe made more models with the positive display. It's strange they didn't do more consumer testing before releasing
Nothing new here, lol.
G-Shock fans know that non-MIP negative displays are absolute garbage, but they still buy them to complain about it.
Mudman is a unisex term :)))
... Officially confirmed by Casio 😂
I though tough solar meant no battery. They have a capacitor that light chg up and can hold it for 4 mo of so. At least my citizen tough solar has no battery and never needs anything but light. Not paying that much for any watch. ❤
A tough solar rechargeable battery should last 15-20 years.
It's a bit misleading, but it's usually always a rechargeable battery.
The same goes for Citizen eco-drive and a few Seiko solar watches.
Lovey watch. Shame. Negative display is a big turn off. That luminous bad boy is still a grey looking watch

Pointless watch, honest review. My PRG270 which is 20 years old does virtually everything this does and is smaller!
It’s good if you have olive green nikes or hiking boots to match it to, if you’re that pedantic anyway (I am) 👍
I like that they kept the digital display it keeps the charm and the positive is not that hard to read ,MIP is good but for more future up to date take I go with OLED then it’s a smart watch again the apple is better at this thing , hope they keep the g shock the way it is and update the sensors like GPS and More environmental sensors may be positional breadcrum navigation and features like parachute jumping assistance and night vision operations capabilities would be a nice upgrade
Anyway Mudman gender neutral hahah 😂

thats a nice fucking beard bro
Thanks Jacob. My daughters want me to keep growing it viking style. Not sure I can pull that off though 😂 hope you're well buddy
I would buy gw 9400 and prw 30 or prw 35 before this.
Bioplastics won´t last as long as the regular plastic and resin. Nothing new with this watch. Just Casio milking the cow. Features and designs are getting boring. They always feel and look like the same watches.
Your first point is totally wrong, there's no evidence to suggest these bioplastics have a lower lifespan than regular plastic.
AUAUAGH TOO MANY PLASTICS! unsubscribed :)

Why is it surprising the Mudman would keep a digital display?
It's never been anything other than a digital G-Shock.
@@StardustLegacyFighter perhaps because Casio has a habit of converting old favourites to analogue... like frogman.
