You don’t need a bank in Germany, you can go to any supermarket, buy something and then ask for cashback, in English, yes they say cashback, and then say how much you want and they just charge your bank for it except you don’t have any bank charges like at an ATM. It’s absolutely pouring here in Rheinland-Pfalz too. Scheiss Wetter!
Maybe Evan still has an American account, I'm not sure about the British one. I 🇩🇪 also had difficulties in Switzerland (ec-card), but it was a long time ago.
@@evantry it out Evan. It’s really convenient if you are needing cash. Just say when you are buying something before they open the cash register, und 30 EUR cashback bitte, or whatever amount you need and bob’s your uncle.
Amazing getting see your travel channel back in Germany! I've been waiting for this ever since I saw you were heading back to Berlin for a minute. You were a big inspiration for my own move to Germany, and the creation of my own travel channel too that I make with my wife. If you find yourself in Munich before you head back to the UK I'd be more than happy to buy you a litre!
The cigarettes at the cashier blows my mind. In my part of Canada, it’s actually illegal to display cigarettes for sale. All the cigarettes are behind shelf coverings so you can’t see them. You can’t even see what kinds they have. We have strict rules about what kinds of stores they can be sold in, too.
It's so that you have to be at the checkout before you can get them and the cashier has to unlock the machine or cabinet (presumably after checking you are over 18). It's also no longer legal to post public ads for cigarettes. It does actually limit the amount of cigarettes sold - ten years ago Germany was a smoky kind of hell compared to today. However, I would also prefer for cigarettes to be available in specialty stores only or on only one or two of the twelve checkout lines. Personally I don't mind the guy who wants a really fancy cigar once a week or the one who occasionally smokes a scented pipe, but cigarettes are worse than a bucket of ammonia.
Tip: You can also get cash (up to €200) in the most supermarkets without extra fees. If you pay your shoping, you ask for cash and the card will be charged with the shoping bill + the cash. It is a service for customer, so you have to also buy something. Currently 86% of the German supermarkets offer this service.
You just have to find out, which Bank has a deal with your Bank, if so, ATM is free. Just find the "connected" ones. Also, normally, as a German you would barely take only 100, it is more popular to take 400, and that would last a while. Using credit cards, you often times get later to know, that they have put a "using"-fee added on on your bank account. Thats, why we use only certain ( the right) ATMs and do not pay small items with cards.
Was great seeing you wander around Berlin. I had no problem using my card whilst there. Berlin isn’t the most beautiful of cities but the people and architectural history makes up for it. Oh and the shopping malls are fab!
I could use my card in lots of shops but not in most food joints. And it’s kinda like a binary system, if you need cash once then it’s different if you get me
Coming from the UK where it rains a lot (compared to the high desert where it rains maybe 7 inches in a total year where I live) I thought you would naturally always have a “bumper shoot” with you! You surprised me!

I use N26 Bank and I never pay any atm fees. Even in Vietnam back in 2016 i managed to find an atm without a fee in Spain its gotta be Deutsche Bank, they dont charge fees with german cards in your case: right, I assume if you went to a bank and not just to a standalone atm it would be free for you
Lidl and many other stores don't accept credit or debit cards for cash withdrawals, only girocards (also known as "EC-Karte"), which foreigners won't have.
The reason why the cigerattes are right at the register is not because they are offerd specificly but because you have to get them right next to the cassier. This way underage teens can't try and steal them as easily compared to if they were some random place in the shop.
Are you still trying out the dji action 4 for your vlog? Have you considered trying the osmo pocket 3? upgraded from pocket 2 myself and it's such a lovely camera, although I don't really vlog as such, just capturing stuff around me.
Coming to Berlin to learn German is probably a mistake. Almost everyone here (I live in Berlin) will automatically switch to English when they notice that you're a native English speaker. Even the mail men here speak English. My 12 year old German nephew likes visiting me in Berlin because he thinks it cool that everyone speaks English.
My favorite burger in Berlin is Rembrandt Burger in Friedrichshain, just north of Frankfurter Allee. Burgermeister is decent, I think of it as a better version of McDoof.
I'd love to know what your Deutsches Niveau is))) I reckon maybe C1? I have the same problem aka impostor syndrome: I'm sure my speaking is quite stiff and not fließend for sure, but at the same time I get compliments all the time and I even got hired by a German-speaking company (starting the day after tomorrow actually). So I'm always thinking that people will see through my act and say: no I take my words back, you speak horribly XD

Yeah... all those single freestanding ATMs are just tourist traps.
Always always go to a physical bank

Most of those free standing ATMs are so expensive they are basically scams.
You can find mostly free ATMs in bank branches.
Also exchange rate is bad. In the example you pay 12 GBP just for the exchange rate.
yeah I always avoid them but there are so few banks, it drives me crazy!
Always use your Credit Cards Exchange rate. Visa and MasterCard generally have much better Rates then f.ex. Banks or exchanges.
They don't charge for german cards, though. I always use them for decades at this point.

The reason the cigarette machines are at the exit is because it‘s more efficient if the cashier can check the age right there.
