Dexter is like a full on villain in the books, he even admits he doesn't care about innocent people, but just wants to use the code as en excuse to kill😂
There's quite a bit more comedy as well. A couple times I laughed out loud, like when right after Deb was kidnapped, he referred to him as "the Deb-Napper".
I really liked the route they went with Deb in the books. Imagine Deb getting to process what Dexter is for the rest of the series rather than a single season.
Same, I even have first 6 books (2 omnibus books with 3 stories in each). I remember reading only first one and half of the book 2 with special agent Lundy
the books genuinely have a lot more humour and funny bits than the Tv show. I remember getting weird looks from my family that knew what the tv show was about, when i would chuckle at bits when i read the books. A bit i kinda wished they did keep in the TV series is Dexter does wear a mask and has a fresh kill kit each time. That was why when he went after Jaworski he wrapped his face in plastic wrap because he forgot to pack a mask for his kill. Like it shows he is really just making shit up as he goes. I look forward to hearing your takes on future books like Lundy's book counterpart.
THAT is exact imagery I always wanted to see in a reboot. Honestly frustrated as hell at Clyde Phillips for the corny bullshit we're forced to accept instead.
I always wondered why that's the only episode where he seems to have a makeshift mask. Guess they decided to ditch it after the pilot. "tell me about jane THanders"😅
Had to come back and say thank you for being a legend. Literally no one has posted anything comparing the books and show and if they have it’s the basic stuff
I remember really liking this book. I liked the pacing and the story felt much more concise and to the point. I also liked how the killer just showed up at the end and there was no drawn out love story for Deb with it. I mean I get why they went the route they did for the show. But to me it’s more interesting when the killer is hidden until the end. Especially with his connection to Dexter.
Ive just started reading the book series after original sin was announced, 4 books in - its kinda insane. The villains and dexter are so unhinged I love it
I’ve had the opportunity to meet Jeff Lindsay twice in the past few years and gotten the whole series signed by him. He was pretty nice, though he did call me “obsessed”. NGL, I’m not sure if being called obsessed by the author of Dexter is a compliment or a red flag.
In the first season he actually did still torture them, as we see him use the medical saw to start cutting them up instead of stabbing them. After season 1 where they started differing from the books, he just stabbed them.
In the books, Brian looks drastically different. He looks almost identical to Dexter except taller and paler. That's why when they see him on camera, Dexter and Deb think it is Dexter for a moment. He's also more stiff with his interactions but enough to charm Rita. In the fifth book, he just shows up at Dexter's house. Dexter is mildly worried, but Brian is just there to chill. Dexter is a lot more laisse faire about Brian killing innocents. In one book, Dexter even asks Brian to kill a guy who is after him. Brian kills an innocent man with the same name by mistake, and they both just shrug it off. There is no indication or reason that Brian ever stopped his habit of chopping up hookers. In the last book, Brian shows up, saying he worked for the Mexican Cartel torturing people. Book Brian doesn't seem to have any pent-up rage like in the show. He's just a chill guy except he chops up hookers.
I haven’t read the books, but I remember La Guerta in the show being fairly competent too. Except in season 1, where she was made to seem foolish, like in Debra’s “How does someone so dumb get so much power?” line. Felt like an unexplained switch in the character’s portrayal between seasons. EDIT: I typed that before getting to that certain part in the video. Now it makes sense!
I fully believe that Angel was intended to be in forensic in the pilot but something changed behind the scenes between episode 1 and 2 that led him to become a cop
I noticed that in my last rewatch too. He was only present at the crime scenes and he doesn't have a visible police badge at any point. That and the pilot had a lot more spanish spoken by the spanish speaking characters, it would've been interesting if that had been carried on more past the pilot

Great video! I also just read the book for the first time and was thinking about comparing and contrasting the book and show as well, so I’m glad someone actually did. Think about the time when he tries to explain his urge to kill to Debra “It starts with blood”. And now in Original Sin, where a career at the morgue was no longer an option for him as soon as he noticed the lack of blood when cutting into already dead bodies. So, to me, that was one of the biggest points that stood out to me as being a total 180.

They made Dexter a more redemptive character in the show for the same reason the US Office made Michael Scott more likable. Rita softening Dexter and him slowing appreciating the emotions he is feeling gives him an arch that the audience can root for. It also seems their is more supernatural stuff in the book as well. Dexter, one of the rarest examples of the live action adaptation outright being better than the source material. The first two books are pretty good and worth a read but after that it goes off rails like crazy. I gave up in Dexter is Delicious at a very specific scene involving drugs. (If uk uk) The main giveaway for how much the writing quality fluctuates before it nosedives completely is actually in the first book. I'm glad there's someone who agree that the show is better than the books, no disrespect to Jeff Lindsay but the characterization of his work was abysmal and made some books a drag to get through. Especially considering how formulaic the books endings tend to be. The amount of times a book ending is characters getting kidnapped, Dexter coming to the rescue, gets caught himself just for someone else to kill the bad guy/ save the hostages is basically every book. Maybe the books could be said to be better than the later seasons but as a whole, the show clears
@SoDN. Not only that but the side characters are so stagnant they could be replaced every book and not be noticed. They never changed or grew as characters. Jeff Lindsey is someone who had a great concept but didn't have the skill to maintain it. He's just a mid writer who got lucky. Thankfully though, the show exists.
