Dear Dahlak, I want to express my admiration for you. It’s wonderful to see how you use your voice to discuss important topics in a place where freedom of expression is a given. In many countries, like Eritrea, people who speak out on issues such as women’s rights and equality could face serious risks. The fact that you’re committed to women’s rights and raising awareness shows you have a big heart and want the best for the community. As women, we must stand in solidarity, fighting together for our rights and our freedom. It’s essential that we continue to speak up, even when some would prefer us to stay silent. Keep going, Dahlak. You’re an inspiration to many, and your efforts are making a difference!
There are some thoughts and concerns I would like to share with you, especially about the position of women in our community and the issues surrounding violence and abuse. It is disturbing to see how many women, especially in our Eritrean culture, regard violence from their partners as normal. Many wonder what they did wrong and rationalize the behavior of their husbands. This leads to a vicious circle of violence and victimization. The idea that jealousy or aggression is a sign of love is a dangerous misconception that not only harms women, but our community as a whole. I have seen many newcomers in recent years who have a different view on women's rights and abuse. It's important that we start these conversations and support each other in creating a culture that focuses on respect and equality. Women deserve to live safely and freely, without fear of violence or threats. Let's work together to raise awareness of these issues and support those who are suffering.
