The Closed History of Backdraft - Universal Studios Hollywood | Expedition Theme Park

  • Join us on Expedition Weekly as we look at the now closed history of Backdraft The Ride at Universal Studios Hollywood. With many similarities to the Twisted Ride it Out Attraction at Universal Orlando, this fire special effects show based on the 1991 action movie sure did heat up many guests over the years before being replaced with Transformers the ride.

    You did forget to mention that when the roof "collapsed", the floor also dropped about an inch. When you weren't expecting it, it was a very heart stopping moment (especially combined with the roof effect), and never failed to get a lot of screams. You can see a hint of it at 5:39 in your vid. It's very small, but you can see the handrails jiggling.

    I kind of miss the old Universal. More and more, practical effects are being replaced by cheaper digital replacements, I personally don’t find the digital effects as impressive. Gorgeous and creative for sure. But they simply can match the effort and skill needed to make something like the Backdraft finale. I really hope that they find a way to put back in more shows and practical effects.
    Great video as well! Brought back memories. There was nothing like going to Universal during winter when your fingers and face were numb, only to step into backdraft and get some glorious warmth for a few moments.

    • @Daydreamer947
      @Daydreamer947 5 лет назад +3

      It's ironic because they're replacing all the impressive practical effects in the actual movies with cheap digital effects too. So I guess Universal is on brand lol.

      90s universal was the best. They got super lazy now and half their attractions are 3d. No wonder why their annual passes are soo cheap lol.

    • @raphaelmarquez9650
      @raphaelmarquez9650 5 лет назад +1

      +Tylah They're still using practical effects even in today's movies if you've been watching behind-the-scenes footages.

    • @Daydreamer947
      @Daydreamer947 5 лет назад +2

      @@raphaelmarquez9650 Yeah I didn't think that practical effects were non existent. But you don't see them as much where they should be like in Jurassic Park, were the original was mostly practical effects and praised for being so ahead of their time for doing so, to cutting most of their practical effects back and covering the rest on a computer in order to shell out more lifeless remakes and sequels.

    I remember going on Backdraft with my Dad years ago. It was very scary to my 8 year old self, but my Dad came out looking positively pale and politely asked me that we not go on it again. This was surprising, as my Dad never turned down the opportunity for a ride and we went on many thrill rides together. But we never went back to Backdraft.
    It was years later that I would learn that in his youth he had once been a fire fighter and had a traumatic experience putting out a burning building. Clearly the Backdraft show had brought back that memory full force. Dad never talked about it and last year he passed away, taking that secret with him. Miss you Dad.

    I hated this attraction so much as a kid. A month after I had a house fire my friend and her family thought it would be a good idea to take me on it. I totally broke down in the warehouse part and I had to be taken out through the employee exit. Besides that, I had a pretty good trip to Universal and the employees were very sweet about the whole thing.

    Perhaps it's because I'm interested in firefighting. Backdraft is the best fire fighting movie I've come across. I was working at a movie theatre when it first came out and saw it for the first time on a day off. The place was packed and I was in the back row of the theatre. Even though I knew what was coming, chills went thru me when that first backdraft happened. It "blew" me right out of my seat. And when the fire disappeared into the walls at the factory, I shouted "OH SHIT!!" cause I knew what was coming. You see, when I was 9 I read a book by Dennis Smith, a fireman for FDNY. What he described in the book was captured by Ron Howard to a tee.

    Universal Studios Hollywood sits in the very hot San Fernando Valley - hellish summers with little breeze due to being surrounded by mountains. Backdraft was really amazing when it opened - we didn't have much like it except the tram ride special effects at the time. But the Backdraft attraction was misery on hot days - you're already sweating, you get inside, and then you get blasted with hot air over and over. Fun to watch but you walked out looking for the nearest refreshment stand for a cold drink.

    I never got to see Twister in person, but I loved Backdraft. Maybe the Twister videos don't do it justice, but I feel like Backdraft was a more intense experience. I remember when this opened, I used to live less then 3 miles away from Universal Studios Hollywood, before this and other things around the area were built, the entire Theme Park part of Universal Studios was at the top of the hill the studios were on, then they built the world's longest escalator at the time, bringing the theme park down to the Studio backlot area, they turned the studio commissary into a theme park quick food spot(French frys, hotdogs, pizza slices, sodas, bottle water, etc...) Then the turned one half of a real studio sound stage buildings into the Backdraft the Ride, built a new building for the I Love Lucy experience and the other half of the sound stage into E.T. the Ride, they also relocated the backlot tour embarkment location down there in between The Commissary foods est. and a Star Trek themed gift store, I remember it opened later then E.T., About 3 months I think, it was very hot inside although I think the Miami Vice Action Spectacular show(replaced by Water World) got hotter with its explosions and being outside in the heat during summer, before this the studios way of showing the technical side of this was during the backlot tour, the tour tram stopped outside the same soundstage and tourist disembarked the tram and went inside into a small room were several people would be selected to take part in some scenes, then the chosen were led off while the rest go into the next room, inside you sat down and then a show started, the tour guide would start explaining filming techniques and tricks like how Fred Astair danced on the ceiling, then a curtain would open revealing one of the chosen tourist strapped to a chair laying on a wall in a box the rotated, this is how the Breakin' 2 Turbo dancing on the walls and ceiling scene was done, then the guest gets put on camera and they show how the room worked in filming, next guest went into a second area, here the center part of a Daloren was mid stage just interior, roof and doors, rear and front ends had been removed, in stage were several more of the selected guest one dressed like Marty McFly, this time there showing how CGI and live action sequences were filmed and combined, the one dressed like Marty is instructed to get inside and pretend to run from someone swerving through 5 o'clock L.A. traffic while the other 2 people are guided over to handles attached to the car, in moves the car up and down from side to side the moves the car up and down from front to back, when the guide yells action every one does their part while it's filmed, then your guided into the finale area were a follie stage is, this is how sound effects are added, the taping from the last room is out up on large screens and the rest of the selected people are brought out they are each taught a certain thing to match a scene and then it's synced to the film and then it's played to show the results, the Backdraft ride took the place of all this doing the same thing esentially

    I think I only went through this attraction once as a kid during one Universal Studios trip, but I specifically remember the film segment about the flame being beautiful. I haven't gone to a theme park since, unfortunately, but it does make me sad to hear that it closed down in Universal Hollywood. I hear the Transformers ride is pretty decent? The number was CFD, but LAco. FD, station 51. Backdraft was good, Armageddon WDS in DLP was a lot better, since you're in center of the action.

    Maybe it's because I'm American, but the movie is very much remembered among adults I know who were old enough to have seen the movie when it came out. It is remembered very fondly among them as a good movie.
    If I hear you say differently about twister, I'll know it must be a cultural difference. 😂 Twister is not nearly as remembered as backdraft, despite it being my favorite movie I know it's not all that well known unless you grew up in the states and saw it playing CONSTANTLY on tv channels for years. Which was the case for me. Never went on backdraft, but from the looks of it twister seems like a better attraction overall although backdraft seems much more intense.

    When I went to the Backdraft ride, they did not show either of the preshow films. We just waited in the rooms till they moved us to the next room.

    I remember going on this as a really little kid, thinking it was the stupidest goddamn thing and hating being so close to so much fire
