I've just finished a 2litre 425hp build for an Evo 9 with a 6 speed, its in with the tuner now. I stipulated that I want to look after my 4th gear as much as possible to keep the torque down. I'd like to track it. Is it just a matter of time before i blow my gear box, can i adapt a driving style to still go fast but look after those top gears?
That's going to be tough. The 6 speed is a very finicky transmission. I've seen them break on highly modified evos and I seen them break on 100% stock evos. Unfortunately with the 6 speed is not a matter of if it goes, its more like when it goes. Your best bet for helping is survive is torque management. The less torque you put threw it the better the chances are that it will survive longer.
My 6 speed has taken 627bhp 510 torque for nearly 3 years. Been fine so far. No issues. A lot is how youve looked after it. I had the car from near new so its been regulary maintained. The box itself has done over 100k miles. That said you cant deny they are a weaker gearbox by design.
@@jethrox827Done one trackday, and some road pulls. I mentioned changing to a 5 speed at the time and the tuner said it would be ok. I would say at 425bhp you would be fine, as long as your not abusing it. All depends how its been looked after and what sort of life its had though. It may last, it may not. Its just one of those things. Ive used millers crx 75w90 nt oil in my gearbox for 12 years and it seems to have worked well.
I do have a 2.4 motor so they are significantly more strenuous on drivetrain parts. So if you have a 2 liter motor that helps with the stress. Hopefully that will help with some of the anixety.
JB weld them teeth back up there. Good to go.

@@flubbergaster4927 do you do pulls in 4th gear? Any track days?

This gives me 6 speed anxiety :(

All that 2.4 tq
Build a stroker motor they said. It will be fun they said. HA! Actually I can't lie. It was a blast.
That's what we call FUBAR
Yep. Talk about a bad day for the bank account.
