The double bins is my "addition" to the many manpack variants out there. The entire pack fits in a walmart bought backpack that has lasted 2 years so far of constant use. those bins store antennas, earphone, separation kit etc. the MP1 is great when no trees are around
You had to repeat your call to W1AW a few times. I'm from Connecticut and have been to W1AW and I'm familiar with their setup. The main thing missing is a counterpoise. That will dramatically improve your signal.
+AD4ZU RADIO Thanks for your comments, If you look closely at around :52 seconds, you will see I have 3 counterpoise. ruclips.net/video/ERv09vg8_vo/видео.html I have counterpoise cut for each band. I even have a small fishing spool with about 35 feet I can roll out to any length for different bands. That day conditions were not so good, ive worked Asia with ease on the portable rig. Many thanks ruclips.net/video/ERv09vg8_vo/видео.htmlruclips.net/video/ERv09vg8_vo/видео.html
Well done I agree the pvc is lighter. Am a newbie to ham, but as a carpenter I can definitely take this design to a new level. If you dind the specs please let me know. 73
thanks for sharing this with me. RUclips thought it was a can of sp*m, but I approved it. thanks for watching and for the kindness on my video it's very much appreciated. 73 de oh8stn
***** Wow! Your design inspired mine. So I really appreciate your comments. The double bins on my manpack are the only "twist" I added. They hold extra antennas, and other must have items. I have the h-250 handset, but just can't get connectors like you have. Any pointers? Did you make yours h-250 handset/and other headset connectors? many thanks, best 73's
sigmytube Hello again, I'm glad my build helped with yours. Really cool. The double bins are a real neat idea for sure. On the h-250 hand set, you could replace the military connector with a home made pig tail that would have a short cat plug that goes to radio and a wire to plug into the speaker jack. All you need to know is the corresponding wires in the military plug to replace with said pig tail,,which should be, A- is ground...B- is speaker...C- is PTT...D- is microphone. If it is the 5 pin military plug.. But, first do a google search to make sure I'm correct. As far as the manpack I built, I recently completely rebuilt it over to a new design. I'll be posting a new video some time soon of it. 73's my friend...Bob...N1TZU
Is this made of pvc or copper pipe excellent build. Do you have a video showing the part measurement or a link. I can refer to. Like to get in my shop to make one. . KD2MPI
Hi Nikko, it is PVC, but reinforced with simple rivets at every joint. I found the copper to be to heavy for my backpack/travel needs. After 4 years, the build has not failed once nor come apart. The paint has also held up and I made a few tweaks "here and there" like add bluetooth, on off switch etc. Because of it being PVC, it is also cheap to experiment with the dimensions. If I come up with the paperwork, I will post it for you, but it really was a fun, simple and rewarding build. Battery = Bioenno Will follow up soon if I find my hand drawn original plan...
Hi Stewart.... just wanted to get a closer look at this beauty... no email on QRZ... if possible, could you give the specs for this, and the antenna mast intrigues me... please expand on the info ... thanks.. wi7ard
After some time, I finally updated the dimensions... k4ecd.com/cq/dimensions Please share with your portable builders! Thanks for your kind comments :-)
No Problem, I hope I made the instructions appropriately. It is not a difficult build though. You must have a riveter - only tool that might not be common (bought mine for
Correct, and I riveted it to the PVC. The two side bins hold antennas, cables, earphones etc. I was surprised how strong it ended up being, even though it was 1/4 " PVC (I think). If you make improvements, please share :-) If you are a newbie, what rig are you putting into it? I use 857, Bioenno 12a battery and LDG tuner. I also have a folded 40w solar panel that fits in my backpack.
Your manpack came out great! Nice setup, love the MP1 antenna you've got on there.

It definitely not 1/4 pvc more like 1/2 or 3/4 in. I definitely will share the mods that I will customize to my taste and needs.
Right you are 1/2 PVC, sorry. Will look for those details and post soon.
Hi Nikko,

you said you can improve the build which I look forward to very much. Please share your ideas online when you can.
Did you use aluminum stock and angles to make the brackets?
