touhou is like bronies, only with no corporate handbreaks because author and owner of game ip is ok with whatever fan content fans create with no exceptions like bad apple being just remix of first game soundtrack with added vocal, by one fan group and animation by another guy following some other guy idea and then it was ported to run on anything from calculators to windows task mannager there is over 10 oficial games with different main characters, plus fan games and nsf content
12:26 Chapter 102? I think you mean C102? if that, "C" is stand for 102th "Comiket", the biggest Doujinshi convention in Japan, where small or independent circle all around japan sell their goods. And yes, this "series" (or at least the main one) is made by one guy "ZUN" and sold here.
isit a game .. yesn’t 😛.. Touhou has a game in pretty much every genre nowadays .. started as a bullethell.. went to a puzzler and now there are rpg’s, fighting games, fps etc
If you're interested in more Touhou videos/music, I can recommend a few. "priere sound holic" is a really good one. Any video from minusT you can start from "Subterranean Stars". "Opposite World" is a really good song. "KILLOVE FIREPROOF!" is just a blast. "unconscious requiem" is a creepy one but a love it. "花月夜 「Yonder Voice" is a good one too. I could list many more music and stuff that I like, but I think that's enough for now.
Flandre Scarlet is the character who was singing in this video. Flandre is the Extra Stage Boss of Touhou 6. She is a Vampire, a Magical Girl, and the Younger Sister of Remilia Scarlet. Flandre is “capable of destroying absolutely anything” and was “locked” in the basement of Remilia’s Mansion for 495 years. She could easily break out of the basement due to her ability, but she chooses to stay in the basement because all of her needs are met. “Who Killed U.N. Owen?” is a song based on “U.N. Owen Was Her,” which is the title of Flandre’s Theme in Touhou 6. The name “U.N. Owen” is a reference to Agatha Christie’s mystery novel, _And Then There Were None._ “U.N. Owen” is a play on name for “Unknown” and was the alias used to invite a group of rich and influential people to a fancy house party where they would be murdered off one by one. Despite her lack of appearances throughout the series, Flandre Scarlet is one of the most popular characters in Touhou, and her theme remains the most popular in the entire series.
If you want to play _Touhou_ for yourself, you should start with _Touhou: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil_ (6th Game) or _Touhou: Perfect Cherry Blossom_ (7th Game). There was a reboot of sorts after the 5th _Touhou_ game because the games went from _PC-98_ to _Windows._ The _PC-98 Era_ is pretty much a separate entity from the _Windows Era,_ so you don’t have to start in the _PC-98 Era_ if you don’t want to. Also, it would probably be difficult to set up a _PC-98_ emulator, so yeah, I recommend starting at the 6th or 7th game.
@@MifaWasTaken Really? That’s excellent news! I used to hear all the time about people struggling with a PC-98 emulator, so if that isn’t an issue anymore, that’s great!
May I add to this. Unlike most series, the Touhou characters tend to have a lot of personality to them. It isn't necessarily due to the games though but instead the fans, who give them personalities that may or may not be cannon to the game series. Yes, the game does have some dialect but the fans would take that and expand on it. This is then translated to other medias, including music. More specifically on the topic of music, the Touhou characters are typically associated with a theme song from which they appear in the game itself so it is very common to see the characters being represented in a remix of their theme song. An example would be the character Alice Margatroid whose theme song, Doll Judgement ~ the Girl Who Played with People's Shapes, from Touhou 6 - Perfect Cherry blossom, was remixed by IOSYS to make Marisa Stole the Precious Thing. The blonde character in that video was indeed Alice Margatroid. As for the games themselves, they are mainly Shoot 'em Ups games. Think of the classic arcade game, Galaga, for reference. However, there are more projectiles/enemies in the Touhou games that the entire franchise was given the nickname, Bullet Hell. The main games are usually classified with a whole number and can be either use the Touhou XX or THXX format. Example of this is Touhou 7 - Perfect Cherry Blossom. There are other side games, such as fighting games and other genres, that use the Touhou XX.X or THXX.X format. Example of this is Touhou 9.5 - Shoot the Bullet.
If you want more Touhou, you could check out the "Memories of Phantasm" OPs. It's an entirely Fan-made anime project. The Touhou community is actually insane.
I recommend you watch “what is touhou? A brief explanation” by AspreyFM that will probably help you understand the series a bit more. 6:12 the characters in this scene are from left to right; Hong Meiling (a Yokai) the gatekeeper of the Scarlet devil mansion and martial arts master; Patchouli Knowledge is a witch that lives in the mansions library and have the manipulation of fire, water, wood, metal, earth, sun and moon; Remilia Scarlet a vampire and the owner of the Scarlet Devil Mansion and the sister of Flandre (the girl with the ornament wings) and she can manipulate fate ; Sakuya Izayoi a human and the head maid who serves Remilia, and she has the power to manipulate Space-time; And then we have Flandre Scarlet the sister of Remilia, she resides in the basement of the mansion, and she have the power to destroy absolutely anything and everything (she can crush the “eye” of the target she wants to destroy just by squeezing it, I don’t know what that “eye” is, though. And she apparently have the “eye” of everything in her right hand)
Something you haven't quite picked up on yet is that all the tracks you've heard so far are remixes by fans. Touhou has a vibrant and creative fanbase and these songs others have made are just one side of it, there's also fan games, fan fiction, a boatload of artwork and... uh.... lots of some other particular thing too. So, it might be worth listening to some of the original songs these were based on so you can hear how they've been altered for these remixes. Still, if you want some more recs of other groups you haven't heard yet here are a few: Akatsuki Records - Necromantic Demetori - Nuclear Fusion Eurobeat Union - Realize Crow's Claw - Puppet of the Magus Pt.2 (Lost My Lover immediately followed by Doll In Hand, it's 1 track split into 2) Melodic Taste - The Venerable Ancient Battlefield Shibayan Records - Tiny Little Adiantum
@@kuroneko1300 Frankly they have way too many great songs to list, I made a whole playlist on YT titled Essential Akatsuki Records but that's still just scratching the surface
Yes, Touhou is a game franchise. The main games are bullet-hell shoot em ups known for difficulty. That said, the fandom is crazy talented and diverse. Songs like this are basically an extension of the existing lore/music to make something new. [Note: basically every character/boss has at least one music theme associated with them, most characters appear as bosses, with a boss theme playing when facing them.] The girl you see is Flandre Scarlet, the extra boss (special extra difficult boss after the game's main story) of the 6th game and first Windows game after the PC-98 era (making it the first game many played/where exposed to) whose boss theme is called "U.N. Owen was Her?" [Flandre has a lot of references to "And Then There Were None" by Agatha Christie]
Just to expand on this comment, each game has a music score. There are several talented "Indie" groups that grab the original score and adapt the song to what you listened to here. You can find any genre from Rock, Jazz & Swing (this would be fun to watch you react to), Eurobeat, Hardcore, Orchestra, etc. Even traditional asian instruments.
I'd recommend checking all 4 openings of Memories of Phantasm, which is a fan-made anime for Touhou (and it looks so good you wouldn't think it's fan-made) Also as someone else already recommended "HELLOHELL" by Akatsuki Records Stack's voice is just so good, I listen to this one a lot
Oh whoops correction to my earlier reply, I was already deep into Touhou by the time Memories of Phantasm came out. It was the Touhou Kinema Kan PVs I was thinking of. Which are also great, though not sure if they'd make for as good of a reaction video due to for example the longer midsection the first one has. The first section of the first one and the whole Second Curtain maybe?
If you notice the mirror actually gives away the reveal, not only is the room reflected different, but also she doesn't have a reflection since she's a vampire.
There are beautiful fan-created animations of in-game battles, in full 3D. Such as those of 'minusT' The best I can recommend is "[Touhou 3D] Humans vs Yukari" No dialogue, just action, body language, and sheer Touhou Music.
I agree on minusT, but I'd recommend starting with Eternal Night part 0 and part 1, then going back to Humans vs Yukari, Subterranean Stars, and Brambly Boundaries. I prefer Eternal Night in part because it's the newest and thus best looking, but more so because part 0 introduces several characters and shows off a little of what the games kinda look like, and then part 1 has the two main protags, Reimu and Marisa, battle to an excellent medley of their themes, and does it all in less time than most of the older videos.
You should check out minusT's animations. They are basically recreations of the games battles in 3D and while it's mostly focused on the animation than the music it's still pretty good to listen to
BGM : UN Owen Was Her ? One of Touhou's most recognizable tracks. It belongs to none other than Flandre Scarlet, who despite having appeared in only two games (Touhou 6 and Touhou 17.5) smurfed her way to the top of the popularity polls last year. Wasn't even a contest, she won best character, best track and best game. Although her big sister Remilia locked her in the basement, her ability to destroy anything makes her able to break out at any time. She merely chooses not to, since as a vampire, there isn't much she could do outside anyways. It's a misunderstanding both in and out universe that she's crazy, on the contrary her judgement is sound, and she only ever uses her ability to save the day. She's a person who acts childish yet is actually mature (the reverse of her sister who acts mature when she's really childish).
My suggestion is Akatsuki Records. They are a big group that releases amazing Touhou songs, and their singer Stack is the Ado of Touhou songs with a really unique voice. Their songs are usually themed after one or two characters from the games. My favorites are "Shout It Out Loud!!!", "HELLOHELL" and "Black Mirror on the Wall" songs.
Yes! I've wanted to recommend Akatsuki Records and touhou music in general for the longest time, but was hesitant since i imagine the schedule was pretty busy with vtuber songs and anime, and introducing another rabbit hole could be stressful Glad to see that this recommendation might reach Luke now ❤
Flandre is a odd character cause she's had very few official appearances in the series despite being arguably the most known. Because of that there are several interpretations of her personality in fan works like this video. People interpret her as a sweet lonely kid,a unstable killer, sometimes someone that that has a grudge against her sister, and sometimes a mix of everything. And this can be applied to nearly EVERY touhou character to some extent Hope this context helps
Originally, a man named ZUN wanted to make game music, so he made a bullet-hell game, Touhou 1, in which he put his albums, as boss and stage themes, now there are 19 official games and tens of other fan-games, there is an anime, there are doujins, there are music videos, like this, there are TONS OF MEMES and merchandice, like the infamous fumos. There is so much collaboration with the community and freedom in creating Touhou content, ANY type of content, because it has almost no copyright laws, so anyone can do whatever they want with it It is one of the BIGGEST franchises on the Internet Highly recommend getting into it 🙏
I want to recommend Grip & Breakdown by SOUND HOLIC as your next Touhou reaction so you can see how different the same base theme can be taken by the Touhou fan community. GRIP & BREAKDOWN uses the same boss theme from Flandre Scarlet "U.N. Owen Was Her?", but does a more metal take with the same fundamental melody.
To clarify, this is another fan song. It's based on 'U.N. Owen Was Her?' the theme/boss music of Flandre Scarlet. Because the sixth Touhou game (Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil) was the first one available for Windows, the characters from it are considered iconic among the fanbase and Flandre, as the first EX boss for many such players, gave a suitable first impression. Flandre's theme is particularly memorable for being a mix of dreadful and playful (her boss fight is her idea of 'playing', and considering how the bullet hell shoot'em-ups that are the series' bread-and-butter were created in-lore as a less lethal alternative for settling conflicts... yeah).
Flandre is a character who's characterization varies from person to person. The one used in this video is one that takes a more psychotic and murderistic take on the character (largely to match with the tone of the song). In actuality she's essentially a child with a nuke. Even people who are stronger than her view her as dangerous. Her power is literally to be able to destroy anything (Many Touhou powers are abstract and don't necessarily have any stated limits, like her sister's power is to manipulate fate). Really, though, she's just a NEET that likes to sleep and is more interested in having fun than doing anything serious. Considering her strength, this also makes her a rough "playmate" during spell card battles (the fundamental battle system used in Touhou). She's one of the most popular characters and her theme (UN Owen was Her?) is one of the most famous songs from the franchise (which was remixed in this video) My Recommendation is anything by minusT. These videos are a pretty well rounded interpretation of what Touhou is (From visuals, characterization and music). They are basically 3D interpretations of major events that happen within the series. Over a near 10 year period they have made 8 videos. In order: Reimu vs Remilia Marisa vs Flandre Reimu vs Yuyuko Humans vs Yukari Subterranean Stars (Marisa vs Okuu) Brambly Boundaries (Reimu vs Koishi) Eternal Night Part 0 (Prologue to the Imperishable Night Storyline) Eternal Night Part 1 (Reimu vs Marisa) While the older videos are (visually) rough (they are old after all, but did look great when they came out), you can easily see their progress as they master the craft. They are all good videos and probably the most "normal" way to experience Touhou as a universe outside of the games.
I don't like it when people use the word "song" willy nilly. Night of Nights does not have singing and therefore shouldn't be called a "song". I've seen people on the internet argue that "Songs don't need lyrics" and don't explain how they're just different from music. Karaoke are songs because they are meant to have lyrics, therefore can be sung. My perfectionist brain likes set, specific definition for words, such as song. The word you are looking for is "Piece" or "Remix".
You got in my heart with Flandre. She is a vampire who can can destroy fate itself. Also her main characteristic is that she is insane, but really INSANE. I recommend going a bit deeper into her concept. Btw the U. N. Oven is based on the novel "And Then There Were None" which the anime Umineko no Naku Koro ni is also based on. To explain you a bit more about Touhou. It's a game and each characted is based of something/someone. But the main character is called Reimu Hakurei and main "mission" in the game is to resolve the "incidents". It's a bullet hell game. It's not a game you will enjoy if you are not into bullet hells. But you can fly through each game in about like 30 mins.
I recommend watching Minus-T animations. (Might be a little late to get a decent number of up votes) A beautiful showcase of what people love about the games
Day 29 of requesting a reaction to the following openings: Chivalry of a Failed Knight op Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress op Kiznaiver op You could make a multiple op reaction for this. Thank you!
I recommend you check out "reverse trigger" by Akatsuki records, if you are going down the touhou rabbit hole. I think the singer has one of the most unique voices in japanese music and i think you will enjoy it.
【東方アニメPV】 『Prière - プリエール-』/ SOUND HOLIC feat. Nana Takahashi 【東方 ボーカル】 Since you listen to a song about the younger sister. You should listen to one about the older sister. Amazing song and MV
Touhou is a Bullet Hell game, that spawned many doujin/fanmade contents. Particularly well-known content were songs/music videos. Such as the ones you reacted to. Here's hoping you'd listen to one of Akatsuki Records'.
Day 99 of recommending the Beyblade openings. There are the Japanese ones and the English ones. The English version has one opening for a generation, and that for the 1st and 2nd generation. The 3rd gen has one op for one season. But the Japanese version has multiple ops for a season in any gen. You should definitely check both versions out. I made playlists on my channel, so you don't need to search, cause in those compilations are a few off and not in the correct order. Thanks for checking out!
"Don't worry, no-one knows what it is" sounds like a zoomer response. It's a bullet hell series that spawned doujin animations, games, music, comics, memes and pretty much everything else. It's really not that complicated, it's like any other IP in the world that took off and spawned other content, only Touhou was based around internet culture and grassroots as opposed to corporatism.
after this tohou project music rabbithole, we need a gameplay of any tohou game XD its a shooting vertical game like space invaders but with anime girls
I've been checking every day for your next Touhou reaction! Please make them more frequent 😂 I'd suggest you to check out "Necromantic" by Akatsuki Records, the first song on the list I commented on the previous video btw
dont worry luke. Touhou started as a game. now its more of a cultural phenomenon and community project as a whole. You could say kinda like the SCP Wiki/Universe.
You should check out Stack (aka Stack Bros) over at Akatsuki Records. Lots of Touhou related tracks over there. One of my personal favorites is Hanipaganda.
The girl you're seeing here is Flandre Scarlet, which is the 7th boss, known as an Extra Boss, in the 6th installment of the Touhou franchise. She's a vampire and little sister of the final boss of the game. She's portrayed by the fans as a mischevious, if not straight up insane, child with an uncontrollable force, caged inside her room by her sister. Canonicity of her synopsis aside, this is how most of the fans sees her as. Each character in Touhou has their own boss theme, as almost every character appears as one, so all of these Touhou songs are basically arrangements of boss themes, with lyrics that most of the times relate to the character's personality.
To go deeper, you can check out memes like: Death note U.N owen was her , or Ronald McDonald insanity. I think it's a good representation on what it was like back than.
So... Flandre Scarlet is the character featured in this video, not much is canonically known about this character due to the fact she only appears as an optional superboss in the first game in Touhou's Modern era, Touhou 6: EoSD(Embodiement of Scarlet Devil). The only things canonically confirmed are: her age is 496+(We know this because she was locked in a basement for 495 years due to fear of her or fear for her), her unique skill (Which she is implied to not have full control over) is to totally and completely destroy anything she wishes, and that her older sister claims that they are descendants of Vlad Tepes(Dracula) making them true vampires. The Touhou fanbase seems to be split on whether she is a sadistic demon masquerading as an innocent child, or a sweet 'little girl' who doesn't know her own strength, and thus tends to accidentally kill people.
Ah yes this song, nothing sinister there just a lil vampire who's grounded a good 495 years for being a little bit naughty. In the song, the whole "candies and teddy bears" part was a delusion but the games themselves are way more light-hearted. As for what the games are: "Your mission is to dodge every dropplets of rain in a heavy storm and fight back using a hose worth of water" ...Whatever that means
Finally!!! I’ve been waiting for this for ages!! I love this song and flandre is my favourite character. Her design is so unique and she’s the reason I was brought into the touhou fandom. Also side note the girl in the video is flandre scarlet. The sister of remillia scarlet. She’s a vampire who lives in the basement of the scarlet devil mansion and is referred to as “the dirty little secret of the scarlet devil mansion” She’s a bubbly and energetic yet extremely dangerous character in the touhou series.
Akatsuki records, Stack jas dome top tier vocals. Most any of it is going to be good, but The creator, Hanipaganda, and Adieu to this lively graveyard give a little spread from serious to a little silly.
I really hope Luke throws himself sometime in the future down the rabbit hole that is Japanese folklore and yokai. Loved for example the side missions in the "Ghostwire Tokyo" game :). That reminds me I still have to look at the parade of demons books that sit somewhere on my pc :D. The folklore is so cool and interesting and different than our western ones.
Community - Flandre is yangire and yandere. She will kill you on sight. Actual lore - She's just a sad and lonely girl who is locked under the basement and just want someone to play with.
Official Touhou games are either Arcade Shoot 'em Ups or fighting games, all the rest is made by fans, which can also commercialize Touhou Spell Bubble, Touhou Empires and Touhou Lost Word are all unofficial games, while Touhou 19 is official, made by the creator of the series, ZUN
I just stumbled upon your channel, and your subscribers are pretty brutal for recommending this straight after bad apple lol. Touhou in its original form is a series of bullet hell video games created by a solo dev (from story to musics to actual programming the games) who goes by the name of ZUN. There are plenty of major characters who appear in the series, and almost all of them got a pretty convoluted backstory, more often than not connected from one character to the other. The girl in this video, Flandre Scarlet, she's not the main protagonist of the series, but she's got one hell of a backstory. The story is so expansive to the point there are countless official & fanmade books, PVs, musics, and animes telling the stories of these characters.
i think he needs to listen to a few songs sung by Stack from Akatsuki Records. I find her vocals to be very different and she has quite the vocal range.
oh flandre first cool. she is an insane but popular character that literally is the embodiment of destructive power but do feel little bad for because her own sister locked her in the basement for 495 years with close to NO "human" interaction of any kind. also just to "help" you sleep at night after this song remember she has a move that makes her become 4 copies that can act separately (fake evil laugh). For what touhou is the "base" game series is similar to the 2d flying to top of screen plane shooters but ALOT more projectiles and is the source of the game category called bullet hell/ bullet curtain but as was seeing it has a BIG amount of spinoffs both official and fan made so if try looking at it plus any random type of game style there is like a 70% chance could find at least one example of it. fps check; fighter check; rpg CHECK; dungeon crawl check; tower defend check; platformer check; Pokémon ripoff check; etc.
Touhou is a game series of bullethell games that has basically no copyright attached to it, made by one guy, that is HUGELY popular in Japan, so there is a T O N of fan content for it. I tried to play it briefly and uh it is NOT something I'm good at lol, it requires sharp and precise reactions and I am not great at those. That said, I'd love to see you at least try it!
Touhou, another great rabit hole with many talented fans making games and music ! If you wish to learn a few things about the game, and also have great videos to react to, I can recomend you MinusT 3D animations, starting with touhou 6 and getting better and better the more you watch his videos, he gathered all his 3D video in a playlist for our enjoyment.
A lot of the games you were seeing was made by fans of the series, since the original creator wants to encourage fan content allows fans to do whatever they want with the characters. So it just has a huge following because it's basically the Open Source equivalent of character design.
Highly recommend suikasen. It's a short fanmade series, only 4 episodes. But the story is very heart touching and music is awesome. btw, my english is bad, so it might be a little bit weird.
Touhou is a game, with lore and whatnot, however, the fanbase is so big, that there are multiple fanons, that contradict each other, and the official canon. helped (And hindedered) by the lax copyright laws of the creator, and has had multiple decades of building up lore, characters, story, and gathering fans to either follow, or create new fanons
I recommend you watch Scarlet Sky - Original Touhou Fan Song feat. TALI, Kylee Brielle from StringStorm. It more or less explains the story of Touhou 6, which is where Flandre comes out, the character you saw in this video. Great reaction! I enjoy your content!
4:50 "Is this the main character?" No, the "main character" is Reimu Hakurei, who is the playable character in all of the mainline games. Reimu is a brunette wearing a white and red traditional Japanese shrine maiden outfit and big red hairbow. She is the first silhouette you see in Bad Apple. Arguably, "main character" status can also be given to Marisa Kirisame, who is a secondary playable character in _most_ of the games. Marisa is a blonde witch in a black and white button-down dress outfit, with the iconic wide brimmed witch hat. Marisa is the second silhouette you see in Bad Apple (riding the broom and catching the apple thrown by Reimu), and was the one who stole Alice's "precious thing" (her heart) in Marisa Stole the Precious Thing. The character in this song is Flandre Scarlet, an EX Boss (extra boss only accessible on the hardest difficulty) from Touhou 6 ~ Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. She is definitely one of the more noticeable silhouettes with her iconic wings, and she is one of the all-time fan favorites.
Oh right, touhou 19 just released! I'll have to check out its OST. Btw, that game might be numbered 19th, but the franchise uses a decimal system for spin offs like fighting games (ex: 17.5) so there are even more than that. It would be interesting if you could listen to the games actual OST. The fanbase is very active regarding remixes and art, but it is also nice to compare what it was inspired by.
The way the Touhou community eases new people specifically reactors into the franchise is, to give you things to react to that involve major players in the franchise, thenthey will explain everything there is to know about said character. We do this over and over again until you know enough about the world that we can start sending you more niche requests that require context to understand.
You had about the same reaction to this as I did the first time I saw this. XD The music from Touhou has been remixed by thousands of artists and groups are based on themes from the games. Seeing that there are well over 30 games and each character and stage have their own themes, folks that make the animations have a lot to choose from. I think "Cirno's Perfect Math Class" is a classic and for the memes, if it was posted on September 9th (Cirno Day) that would be epic. With loads of Touhou content about and others have mentioned the "Memories of Phantasm" fan animated series, but there is also the "Kinema Kan" series of animations that are just openings and endings. Not for a show, but arranged to be about the size of an Op or Ed animation.
Something about these videos, PV's: most, or all, of them are songs composed by circles, groups, using Touhou's OST (in this case was Fladre's theme). There's thousands, or even millions, of songs but not all of them have a video, with some luck they have something like this one- Beyond that door - is a great one. Absolute one-way street- is another I like a lot too.
If you love OST or Songs from games, I highly recommend songs from Warframe such as "We Are Lift Together", "For Namer", "Sleeping in Cold Below", etc ...
I will continue recommend "Touhou 3d" series by minusT , the short description of this is what the touhou games would look like in 3d, it also has some good music, a very small part of the context from the games themselves, and of course a heeell of bullets 1 episode called [Touhou 3D] Reimu vs Remilia
You playing Touhou would be a dream come true, lmao. I’d recommend you start with Touhou 6: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (official game) or Touhou Luna Nights (fan game)
12:30 You should **definitely** play Touhou. If not for content, then for your own edification. You will be a richer human as a result. It could be content though. It's fandom brings out the best of hardcore gamers and fans of cute anime girls. If you want to play the games in order you probably want to start from Touhou 6: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, since the first 5 games came out for the largely defunct PC-9800 operating system. Plus, it was the game where Flandre and Remelia debuted, and they have a lot of fans. Oh, and prepare to die a lot until you git gud. Touhou might look cute and cuddly, but it's old school.
To be blunt Touhou is a HUGE indie game series. Potentially the biggest indie game series known with a lot of fan made content to the point that there are entire conventions dedicated to it and so much fan content from anime, fan made games, music videos and remixes, some of those fans even got to work with the actual guy behind the series to make some official entries and spin offs
Flandre Scarlet is the Extra Stage Boss of Touhou 6 EOSD, and arguably one of the most popular and recognizable. I know her theme, U.N.Owen Was Her?, was one of the first ones i ran across so SO many years ago. The Fanon depiction of her is rather......Insane to say the least but shes really just a lonely awkward kid locked away because her power is fucking terrifying. This is one of my favorite animations to this song and honestly im glad people are still sometimes falling into the Touhou Black Hole haha its a fun trip!
Luke, U.N. Owen is actually a character created for the Agatha Cristie murder mystery "And Then There Were None" (aka "Ten Little Indians"). U.N. Owen = Unknown (it's not a spoiler in any way and brought up immediately for hose who missed it). This song/video is definitely a tip of the hat to it. As to if Touhou is a game ... or an anime ... or something else entirely ... it's all of the above plus an experience. There are tons of games, an anime series (Fantasy Kaleidoscope - Memories of Phantasm) and , tons of music videos, tons and tons of fanfiction and fan-art, merch manga/light novels (both official and fan-made) ... It never ever stops.
What you're listening to, and most recommended to you are remixes of ost to touhou. For example this song is Flandre's theme song (the little girl in the mv) and liz triangle is the name of the group(circles) that produced it. Youre in luck because most of liz triangle songs are sang by lily-an. I think you should listen to their original songs before going on listening to the remixed version of it, But either way its fine.
Bro, your reaction is just fire, how funny it was to watch this reaction, ahahaha, such a cool way of speaking, and in general the reaction to what is happening, definitely like and subscribe, thanks for the top video)
Hey mate, for more Touhou songs I recommend two from akatsuki records. 1. Necromantic 2. Samurai Ghost Girl Kill Kill. Really amazing creations based on the in-game soundtracks
Touhou Project is a game series developed and produced by one man - Junya "ZUN" Ota - in large part as a vehicle for his music. He's been making the games since '95, and so far is up to 19 mainline installments and several spin-offs. The games are primarily bullet-hell shooters, but also include forays into fighting games and another genre or two. He's also written a number of short stories, and even a short manga series set in the game's universe. The fan community for the series is bat-shit insane, and are constantly pumping out fan works, including manga, games, and even anime. ZUN, in a fairly unusual move for Japanese game producers, is not only accepting of all these fan works, but actively encourages them as long as they're created in the spirit of fun fan works rather than being an attempt to cash in on the Touhou name, don't spoil endings for official Touhou works, and give appropriate attribution. The fan games run the gamut from shooters to RPGs to enen metroidvanias. TL;DR - Touhou is a massive labor of love from one man, with a crazy AF fan community who are happy to put in just as much effort to show their love for what ZUN's made.
First things first, we're talking about Touhou: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, the first real hit game in the series, and the one that is made for "modern" PC systems unlike the ones that came before. Flandre Scarlet (vampire) is not the main character, she is the EXTRA stage boss of the first PC Touhou game, but by now she's arguably the most popular (winning many popularity polls) and her ability makes her viable for strongest as well, with being able to destroy anything in theory. Her sister, Remilia Scarlet (vampire), the boss of the same game (not the EXTRA stage's, but the main game's), imprisoned Flandre in her room due to a few reasons, one of them being Flandre's power too dangerous. Remilia herself controls Fate, and as one such, she might very well be the stronger of the two. But the game is not really specific when it comes to these things. As such, being imprisoned for 495 years already by the time the player meets her (we have 2 main characters to choose in that game, the main-main character of Touhou, Reimu, or another human, who is a witch, Marisa, both of these two are super popular, and Marisa's interactions with Flan is more fun, making for a lot of shipping among the fandom), Flandre is assumed to have gone at least somewhat insane. Though in the actual game, she says a few crazy stuff, she is still pretty reasonable altogether, so the fandom's depiction of her being completely nuts at times is an exaggeration, but not a baseless one. Everything aside, she obviously has a sweet and naive little girl side as well, and shows affection multiple times later in canon towards the main characters. Literally the embodiment of sweetness and danger. That is Flandre Scarlet.
Great reaction, you are doing pretty good for only your 3rd exposition to Touhou. Glad you have not given up! I would like to recommend next: 東方ヴォーカルPV】KILLOVE FIREPROOF!【暁Records公式】 ruclips.net/video/N03WobKfdlY/видео.html
touhou has evolved from a game series to a massive franchise of diffrent things. There are even fan animes that don't lose in quality to actual animes. if interested. i will send some names. the one i recoomend to start with is A Summer Day's Dream as it will get you adjusted to the plot. and has high studio quality.
For more Touhou goodness you definitely need to check out the Tokyo Active NEETs jazz covers, a few have MMD animated videos, but the music is bloody fantastic regardless.

touhou is like bronies, only with no corporate handbreaks because author and owner of game ip is ok with whatever fan content fans create with no exceptions
like bad apple being just remix of first game soundtrack with added vocal, by one fan group and animation by another guy following some other guy idea and then it was ported to run on anything from calculators to windows task mannager
there is over 10 oficial games with different main characters, plus fan games and nsf content
In regards to touhou, if the product is made by Zun, touhou's creator, its canon, if it isn't its fanon and fan made
12:26 Chapter 102?
There was a reboot of sorts after the 5th _Touhou_ game because the games went from _PC-98_ to _Windows._
The _PC-98 Era_ is pretty much a separate entity from the _Windows Era,_ so you don’t have to start in the _PC-98 Era_ if you don’t want to. Also, it would probably be difficult to set up a _PC-98_ emulator, so yeah, I recommend starting at the 6th or 7th game.
@@HaikuClover the pc 98 games have been put into a collection by fans using an emulator and they are great.
@@MifaWasTaken Really? That’s excellent news! I used to hear all the time about people struggling with a PC-98 emulator, so if that isn’t an issue anymore, that’s great!
Thank you so much for the explanations!
And it was basically made by one dude over several years.
This. Aside from the main game, this anime is definitely a good start point for beginner who wants to know Touhou's story plot and charas. Up.
Agreed, I'd just like to point out that the channel Touhoppai has all 4 Memories of Phantasm openings in 4k 60fps.
Absolutely agree. Liked and commented to boost, and left my own comment recommending the same thing.
Agree
I recommend you watch “what is touhou? A brief explanation” by AspreyFM that will probably help you understand the series a bit more.
6:12 the characters in this scene are from left to right;
Hong Meiling (a Yokai) the gatekeeper of the Scarlet devil mansion and martial arts master;
Patchouli Knowledge is a witch that lives in the mansions library and have the manipulation of fire, water, wood, metal, earth, sun and moon;
Remilia Scarlet a vampire and the owner of the Scarlet Devil Mansion and the sister of Flandre (the girl with the ornament wings) and she can manipulate fate ;
Sakuya Izayoi a human and the head maid who serves Remilia, and she has the power to manipulate Space-time;
And then we have Flandre Scarlet the sister of Remilia, she resides in the basement of the mansion, and she have the power to destroy absolutely anything and everything (she can crush the “eye” of the target she wants to destroy just by squeezing it, I don’t know what that “eye” is, though. And she apparently have the “eye” of everything in her right hand)
I really hope he gets to see Asprey's video, so at least he stops getting confused each reaction xD
@@JSmashChannel0 yeah
Yes, this would help clear up SO much about what he is reacting to. Also, AspreyFM does a good job explaining the basics. Would recommend.
Could be a good idea 💯
Agree that would be a great video to help understanding
Something you haven't quite picked up on yet is that all the tracks you've heard so far are remixes by fans. Touhou has a vibrant and creative fanbase and these songs others have made are just one side of it, there's also fan games, fan fiction, a boatload of artwork and... uh.... lots of some other particular thing too. So, it might be worth listening to some of the original songs these were based on so you can hear how they've been altered for these remixes. Still, if you want some more recs of other groups you haven't heard yet here are a few:
Akatsuki Records - Necromantic
Demetori - Nuclear Fusion
Eurobeat Union - Realize
Crow's Claw - Puppet of the Magus Pt.2 (Lost My Lover immediately followed by Doll In Hand, it's 1 track split into 2)
Melodic Taste - The Venerable Ancient Battlefield
Shibayan Records - Tiny Little Adiantum
Akatsuki Records! Necromantic, Bloody Devotion, Samurai Ghost Girl, frankly the more songs the better because their range is insane
Bloody Devotion is such a banger!!! great taste!
@@kuroneko1300 Frankly they have way too many great songs to list, I made a whole playlist on YT titled Essential Akatsuki Records but that's still just scratching the surface
Adieu, to this Lovely Graveyard
Nice taste
Spirit puppet as well!
Yes, Touhou is a game franchise. The main games are bullet-hell shoot em ups known for difficulty. That said, the fandom is crazy talented and diverse. Songs like this are basically an extension of the existing lore/music to make something new. [Note: basically every character/boss has at least one music theme associated with them, most characters appear as bosses, with a boss theme playing when facing them.]
The girl you see is Flandre Scarlet, the extra boss (special extra difficult boss after the game's main story) of the 6th game and first Windows game after the PC-98 era (making it the first game many played/where exposed to) whose boss theme is called "U.N.
I'd recommend checking all 4 openings of Memories of Phantasm, which is a fan-made anime for Touhou (and it looks so good you wouldn't think it's fan-made)
Also as someone else already recommended "HELLOHELL" by Akatsuki Records
Stack's voice is just so good, I listen to this one a lot
Yeah the Memories of Phantasm OPs would be wonderful. They are a big part of what got me into Touhou too!
💯💯
Senya's vocals in the Memories of Phantasm opening songs are insanely good.
Such as those of 'minusT'
The best I can recommend is "[Touhou 3D] Humans vs Yukari"
No dialogue, just action, body language, and sheer Touhou Music.
Agreed
Yes! I've wanted to recommend Akatsuki Records and touhou music in general for the longest time, but was hesitant since i imagine the schedule was pretty busy with vtuber songs and anime, and introducing another rabbit hole could be stressful
Glad to see that this recommendation might reach Luke now ❤
karmanation, crazy back up dancers, killlove fireproof, dango on fire, pandemonic planet, eyes
basically anything by akatsuki record is good
necromantic of them is really high within my favorite.
And this can be applied to nearly EVERY touhou character to some extent
Hope this context helps
Yeah fr, but canonically she's sweet and playful, just a lil out there 😭
Originally, a man named ZUN wanted to make game music, so he made a bullet-hell game, Touhou 1, in which he put his albums, as boss and stage themes, now there are 19 official games and tens of other fan-games, there is an anime, there are doujins, there are music videos, like this, there are TONS OF MEMES and merchandice, like the infamous fumos.
There is so much collaboration with the community and freedom in creating Touhou content, ANY type of content, because it has almost no copyright laws, so anyone can do whatever they want with it
It is one of the BIGGEST franchises on the Internet
Highly recommend getting into it 🙏
he made the characters so strong that they unknowingly became horror characters lol
"Calm eyes fixed on me screaming" by Foreground Eclipse is a great song and led me to Touhou. Haven't seen anyone react to it.
She's one of the most popular characters and her theme (UN Owen was Her?) is one of the most famous songs from the franchise (which was remixed in this video)
My Recommendation is anything by minusT. These videos are a pretty well rounded interpretation of what Touhou is (From visuals, characterization and music). They are basically 3D interpretations of major events that happen within the series. Over a near 10 year period they have made 8 videos. In order:
Reimu vs Remilia
Marisa vs Flandre
Reimu vs Yuyuko
Humans vs Yukari
Subterranean Stars (Marisa vs Okuu)
Brambly Boundaries (Reimu vs Koishi)
Eternal Night Part 0 (Prologue to the Imperishable Night Storyline)
Eternal Night Part 1 (Reimu vs Marisa)
While the older videos are (visually) rough (they are old after all, but did look great when they came out), you can easily see their progress as they master the craft. They are all good videos and probably the most "normal" way to experience Touhou as a universe outside of the games.
My favorite Touhou song is Night of Nights. It's technically a remix but still.
@@f.u.m.o.5669who. the fuck. cares
@@f.u.m.o.5669 Fair, I guess in this case it would be best to call it my favorite Touhou track. Theme would have been fitting if it wasn't a remix.
Could definitely check it out 💯
@@GOTGames no need man to post it on RUclips since it would be kinda pointless
The only version I've heard of this before your reaction was the instrumental metal cover. I like the feeling of impending doom this version gives!
Actually that's a 100% fan made interpretation. She's way more composed in canon.
I recommend watching Minus-T animations.
(Might be a little late to get a decent number of up votes)
A beautiful showcase of what people love about the games
Day 29 of requesting a reaction to the following openings:
Chivalry of a Failed Knight op
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress op
Kiznaiver op
You could make a multiple op reaction for this. Thank you!
I recommend you check out "reverse trigger" by Akatsuki records, if you are going down the touhou rabbit hole. I think the singer has one of the most unique voices in japanese music and i think you will enjoy it.
Stack is phenomenal.
【東方アニメPV】 『Prière - プリエール-』/ SOUND HOLIC feat. Nana Takahashi 【東方 ボーカル】
Since you listen to a song about the younger sister.
“Ask her to dance, what’s the worst that can happen?”
I'd recommend watching double scarlet next to see more of the scarlet sisters.
after this tohou project music rabbithole, we need a gameplay of any tohou game XD its a shooting vertical game like space invaders but with anime girls
I've waited for this one ^^
Now that we're at this point, we know the only reasonable next step is to react to the Ronald McDonald version
I've been checking every day for your next Touhou reaction! Please make them more frequent 😂
I'd suggest you to check out "Necromantic" by Akatsuki Records, the first song on the list I commented on the previous video btw
I also really want him to react to Akatsuki records. They are one of my favorite touhou circles
Ooo thats also a good one. The fandom has so may good songs its hard to pick one.
The more you watch! The more you recommend, the more you all get 💯💯
I would recommend any video from minus T. His animations are stunning and worth a look.
Minus T's touhou 3D videos are INSANE
If we are talking about creepy touhou music, what about Unconscious Requiem from Shinra-Bansho?
With the mid-in change in art style, Luke absolutely needs to see Madoka Magica. We should make him watch it for sure.
dont worry luke.
5:36 -- Yep. Just a perfectly normal tea party, with absolutely nothing weird or creepy happening whatsoever.

[Touhou 3D] Eternal Night - part 1 by MinusT would be interesting
Finally!!! I’ve been waiting for this for ages!! I love this song and flandre is my favourite character.
Her design is so unique and she’s the reason I was brought into the touhou fandom.
Also side note the girl in the video is flandre scarlet. The sister of remillia scarlet. She’s a vampire who lives in the basement of the scarlet devil mansion and is referred to as
“the dirty little secret of the scarlet devil mansion”
She’s a bubbly and energetic yet extremely dangerous character in the touhou series.
I'd not heard this before, but I do love the hints at U.N.Owen was her? in the melody here and there. ^^
I recommend to evaluate the songs of Akatsuki records, they are understood even by those unfamiliar with the series of games
Akatsuki records, Stack jas dome top tier vocals. Most any of it is going to be good, but The creator, Hanipaganda, and Adieu to this lively graveyard give a little spread from serious to a little silly.
Touhou memories of phantasm openings 1-4🙏
I really hope Luke throws himself sometime in the future down the rabbit hole that is Japanese folklore and yokai. Loved for example the side missions in the "Ghostwire Tokyo" game :).
That reminds me I still have to look at the parade of demons books that sit somewhere on my pc :D. The folklore is so cool and interesting and different than our western ones.
Community - Flandre is yangire and yandere. She will kill you on sight.
Actual lore - She's just a sad and lonely girl who is locked under the basement and just want someone to play with.
Official Touhou games are either Arcade Shoot 'em Ups or fighting games, all the rest is made by fans, which can also commercialize
Touhou Spell Bubble, Touhou Empires and Touhou Lost Word are all unofficial games, while Touhou 19 is official, made by the creator of the series, ZUN
"What is Touhou?" That is one of the big questions... and you can find any answer to it somewhere on the internet
I recommend Minus-T
Marisa vs. Flandre.
It's a very beautiful animation with this character in it.
I agree with all the Akatsuki Records suggestions. Stack's voice is fiery passion. I'm sure you'll love whichever song you'll choose!
Thank you for taking my suggestion!
I have been waiting for this, I hope you do more.
Maybe Yuyuko’s Theme.
4:50 "Is this the main character?"
No, the "main character" is Reimu Hakurei, who is the playable character in all of the mainline games.
To further the confusion (because it's fun), I think the next one should be the "All Mankind's Hisou Tensoku" PV.
XD
The music from Touhou has been remixed by thousands of artists and groups are based on themes from the games.
Funfact: Flandre Scarlet Theme song is Mix(more of less) of "Death Waltz" one of the imposible piano music to ever write (from my understanding)
Also Check this song out "Touhou - Priere" this is song for Reimilia Scarlet (Flandre older sister)
you have it the wrong way around, Death Waltz is a mix of "UN Owen Was Her"
It's the other way around. UN Owen was her? is the original
Next should be Night of Nights
EDIT: This song reminfs me of *you-know-who* from Overlord in the end of season 4
Something about these videos, PV's: most, or all, of them are songs composed by circles, groups, using Touhou's OST (in this case was Fladre's theme). There's thousands, or even millions, of songs but not all of them have a video, with some luck they have something like this one-
Beyond that door - is a great one.
Absolute one-way street- is another I like a lot too.
If you love OST or Songs from games, I highly recommend songs from Warframe such as "We Are Lift Together", "For Namer", "Sleeping in Cold Below", etc ...
I have been waiting for this
I will continue recommend "Touhou 3d" series by minusT , the short description of this is what the touhou games would look like in 3d, it also has some good music, a very small part of the context from the games themselves, and of course a heeell of bullets
1 episode called [Touhou 3D] Reimu vs Remilia
I think you should listen to their original songs before going on listening to the remixed version of it,
But either way its fine.
I would love to see you play this series, Touhou 6 is the first one most people start with.
This PV isn't that disturbing... compared to Shinra-bansho's "Unconcious Requiem".

Touhou has bullet hells, rpg's and visual novels mainly. There's a couple arena fighters as well
Technically, just The Bullet hells and fighters. Everything else is a fan game.
(Though 17.5 is kinda a boss rush action platformer)
Flandre isn't the Main character of there Even is one, she just really popular
This one has some strong Rozen Maiden OP vibes to it.
TL;DR - Touhou is a massive labor of love from one man, with a crazy AF fan community who are happy to put in just as much effort to show their love for what ZUN's made.
i won't tell what anime i talk about, but that totally fell like someone turned into a witch...
I would like to recommend next: 東方ヴォーカルPV】KILLOVE FIREPROOF!【暁Records公式】

touhou has evolved from a game series to a massive franchise of diffrent things. There are even fan animes that don't lose in quality to actual animes. if interested. i will send some names. the one i recoomend to start with is A Summer Day's Dream as it will get you adjusted to the plot. and has high studio quality.
Please check out 'GrilledBird' by Innocent Key that is also one of the fantastic touhou ost-covers
For more Touhou goodness you definitely need to check out the Tokyo Active NEETs jazz covers, a few have MMD animated videos, but the music is bloody fantastic regardless.
