She might just be too fat to have the energy to put up a fight. Or do anything, really. I fostered a morbidly obese rabbit once. This bun was so fat, his belly touched the floor. Wasn't until he'd lost most of his excess weight that he started to show his actual personality. Instead of a mellow fellow we thought he'd be, he was basically bunny Johnny Bravo.
She is a chill cat and she did love being brushed, It must be a relief for losing some of her fur and those stinky fur on her rear. However, her obesity is alarming since she is getting older so arthritis will set in soon and the usual health issue like diabetes and heart issues.
I thought of this too, and in addition to the health concerns, it no doubt affects her quality of life. Poor girl, her owners need to start her on a diet and play with her so she gets some exercise.
I wonder if she eats much? I have a cat (Nico) who eats less than our other cats but he is the same size (if not larger) than Allie. We've got to bring him in to the vet to run more tests, but we all suspect that he's got a thyroid condition. The only good thing about Nico is that he does get his exersice since we let him outside for a few hours and he is super playful and runs around the house, but his weight gain is definitely alarming when you consider the fact that it happened so quickly. I mean, he was a chunky boy before, but he was a normal weight and size.
I had a vet who improved an overweight cat she adopted by changing to a low-calorie diet, and making the cat change floors in the house to get to the food. She got him down to the neighborhood of healthy weight in about a year.
@@pyroromanceryou know she could be a recent adopt right? if this is her first grooming she could very well have new owners who got her when she was already in this condition and they're trying to help her
As someone who has cohabitated with cats for the last 60 years, I want to tell you, as you have already seen, that Allie is an amazingly calm and accepting feline. Impressive behavior for a first groom.
Yup. Allie is an angel, ha-ha. I don't understand how she could get fat. My cats when they were alive would eat all day very expensive, nutritious cat food and they were always skinny. They ate so freakin' much and never gained any fat. Now I feed like six or seven strays that live in the house next door, and it's the same thing. I wanna fatten them up, because they're skinny, so I give them all the food they can eat until they just leave it alone. They just don't gain weight. Coats are beautiful, but they are skinny and feel so light and hollow.😅 I don't get it. I don't wanna get them fat or unhealthy, but I'd like them to not look scrawny. They're all slim like they don't eat. 😢
@@ANSWERTHECALLOFJESUSCHRISTit's because of genetics and habits. Your cats probably are very active all day and/or have a fast metabolism. The same rules apply for humans.
@@ANSWERTHECALLOFJESUSCHRIST Strays and ferals almost always have worms. They can eat non-stop and will always be hungry because it goes right through them. Parasites eat the cat's nutrition and lower their immune system so you often see skinny cats with poor coats. You can try adding a dewormer to their food - there are natural ones available or if you have a nice vet, they can give you prescription dewormer. Google 'deworming feral cats' for more details. I did this for years myself before I was able to finally get the strays in my neighbourhood into no-kill rescue groups where they were adopted out. If that's not possible, make sure they are TNR'd because those 7 cats will multiply quickly. Best wishes!
@@tonnentonie2767 That and her food quality may not be good. Typical store kibble is usually higher in carbs. A carnivore's body is not genetically predisposed to be able to handle carbs well.
@singingman2025 You put her on a diet and she still gained weight? That's impossible, you obviously were still overfeeding her. I hope you take her to the vet. Obesity in animals should not be taken lightly.
@@malloryg4251 Guess it's too much work for some owners to read the food label for nutritional and caloric info, get a food scale and measure out proportions according to the cat's weight, and instate regular feeding times. Easier to just pamper them and leave copious amounts of high calorie cat junkfood out for it so you don't actually tend to your pet's health and needs.
i doubt she liked it, she was trying to cram herself between the flat surface/table and the wall/edge of it... that doesn't really indicate "comfort" in a cat, that indicates she was scared/upset
@@neonhalos She was being snarky and fat-shaming every chance she had. I know cats don't specifically register bigotry, but they can pick up when someone's being rude. And I don't mean the narration, which was also unnecessarily insulting. Talking like that won't make the cat exercise more or get the owners to put her on a weight maintenance plan. This was not one of the best videos I've seen from her. Far from it.
I remembered a previous rotund feline in your shop whose previous owner was a hoarder (now in a much happier and healthier home). I hope Allie is in the same boat
I had a morbidly obese foster kitty who was in a similar boat - when she tried to groom herself, it was like watching a watermelon attempting to do sit ups. For a couple months I had to use wet wipes on her backside several times a day and a sponge bath nightly because she just couldn't reach the area, but as we slowly got her weight down from the mid-twenties to the mid-teens she was finally able to take care of the area herself again. Made a big difference in both her coat condition and her overall behavior - it was magnificent to see a confident, affectionate QUEEN emerging from that "I am indifferent to literally everything" shell.
poor kitty, I hope she gets down to a healthy size soon edit for the peanut gallery: please note that I didn't assign blame to the current owners nor make any assumptions about her current regimen. It's equally possible that her current owner is responsible for her size (either by letting her overeat/not exercise or not getting a possible thyroid or other possible health issue addressed if she's been unable to lose weight under a healthy diet), or that she has moved hands from such an owner to someone who's trying to get her weight under control, or that her current owner was originally the former and is trying to turn things around. None of those change my sentiment, which is simply that I hope she recovers before there's permanent damage. But I suppose people will always look for the least charitable way to interpret a twelve word comment if their insecurity about their own weight or treatment of animals makes them project on it

@dammer001 While it's obviously true that she has been neglected, we don't know if that's the work of her *current* owners. When I adopted my cat almost 2 years ago she was severely obese after living with a doting old lady for the first 4 years of her life. She has been on a diet and exercise regime ever since (now to maintain the healthy weight she has achieved), but it had to be slow going since cats get sick if they loose weight too fast. Maybe I'm projecting, but if Ally is visiting a groomer for the first time when she's already 7 years old then I suspect that there's a new owner that has taken over.
@dammer001 The dried poop is the only thing that makes me think she was neglected. We have a fat cat, too, who got that way due to my grandmother over feeding him treats. We’ve had him on a diet for years, and he hasn’t lost any weight. Pretty sure he just naturally has a low metabolism, as his brother from another mother is the correct weight and got the same over feeding of treats as him.
@renw9876 No offense to your grandma, but I gotta call it what it is--it's still neglect, even if you don't realize that feeding a cat to the point of obesity and even after it becomes obese is bad. People think neglect is starving a pet, but it can also mean overfeeding it and not giving it adequate exercise. Slow metabolism or not, they just aren't meant to be this big. If your cats metabolism is slower than others, you don't feed it the same as the other cats.
Love her color pattern.Pretty calm for a cat to get a bath. Hopefully a diet is in the works. That weight is so hard on their skeletal body not to mention their heart.
yea this is why I watch my cat's food and treat intake, she is only two so she can still run everything off but what weight I keep of her now will only benefit her later. the only one that kinda is allowed to spoil her is grandma lol

That's because healthy cats are like 50-65% fur in volume which is why they manage to squeeze into such tight spaces. This cat on the other hand is more like 10% fur or less.
There were so many burns delivered, this cat needs some aloe support! She has a very unique coat and she looked so cute in the happy hoody. I'm sure she actually felt tons better in the end. Thank you for being so patient with her.
That is some sort of c-locus dilution, in the same family as colourpoint Siamese. If you notice, the bits of her that ought to be black, are brown instead, and she has blue eyes. Normal calico cats are black/orange or grey/tan, and do not have blue eyes.
Poor little girl ❤ I hope she is being well looked after now. She is so sweet-natured and she deserves to live a long and healthy life. It’s not her fault she is overweight 😢
That is one of the prettiest calico coats I've seen in a while, and the blue eyes were gorgeous too. I have a friend with an orange tabby male who is every bit as large as Ally. His name is Rudy and he is constantly being put on diets and diet food, yet he just keeps getting wider. He was surprisingly active and agile until he hit 8 years old. Now his weight is starting to tell. His owner feels so bad about the struggle to slim the boy down because she is being massively judged by her vet and everyone that meets Rudy, and she is trying everything short of not feeding him at all and chaining him to a treadmill. It's possible that Ally's owner is also struggling to get her to a decent weight, so we shouldn't be too quick to judge.
Tell your friend to not switch around diets. Do one thing that keeps him healthy, and just stick with it. Serial dieting makes you really good in developing and preserving fatty tissues. Give him what he needs to be a healthy kittie. Either the rolls drop, or not, and that’s just the way it is. Consistency is key, always the same amount of food, at the same time, no deviations. Several small meals spread out over the day, etc. Round people & pets deserve love, too. =)
If his weight changed very rapidly with little to no change to his diet or lifestyle, your friend should have her cat checked for weight-related medical issues, like hypothyroidism. Additionally, constantly changing "diet foods" will not help the cat; he needs a high-protein, high-moisture, ideally non-grain food fed to him at regular intervals in portions of a slight caloric deficit to help him lose weight. This would likely mean quite small portions 3 to 5 times a day to keep him from being hungry until he gets down to a manageable weight, at which point he could transition to 2 to 3 times a day. He should also have regular strenuous play a couple of times a day, or a walk if he is amenable to a harness. Many people feel they aren't feeding their cat "anything at all" and "starving" them when the cat is given spoonfuls of food for a meal, but the fact is that cats are very, very small, and they do not require that many calories to function. This is why so many cats get obese, because owners feel that the daily recommended diet is not enough, and end up feeding the cat way more than they need.
my cats a bit overweight too and Ive always felt so guilty, even with his diet not much has changed and until im more healthy we dont play much but im working on it. my family calls his extra weight his "speed flaps" helps with aerodynamics. hes not obese by any mean but i still stress about it so i cant imagine how they must feel
I think Allie knew that you were helping her. It must have felt so good to have the clingers and built-up fur removed. She does have such unique and beautiful markings! I hope her owners take your advice and discuss Allie's weight with their vet, because I'm sure she'd enjoy being free of that built-up adipose tissue as well.
Dear owners, if you love your pet please keep him at a healthy weight level. EDIT: this is a general statement, not finger pointing at the current/previous owners.
A small reminder that we may not know the whole story. Allie may be a rescue from a less aware owner. She may have been owned by elderly owners and adopted by their children or grandchildren when they were no longer able to. It could just be first time pet owners, who are trying to work on the problem that they unfortunately started. I doubt GWTD would have made sassy comments about her if her pet parents weren’t aware of the issue and fine with the shade thrown. There’s no reason to throw stones or call animal control when you don’t know the whole story, or don’t know what steps are being taken to help resolve the situation now.
@@TwelthChildI can see what you mean, but not when very clear aninal abuse is shown to us with no clarification of the measures being done to stop it from happening. I am giving the benefit of the doubt and figure that this cat is on a diet now, but you can't expect everyone to just assume so

One of my three cats weighs 16 pounds, while her mama is as lanky as can be; my sister in law's cat is also a whopping 30+ pounds, even though she's fed diet food. There's only so much that can be done if the cat's body doesn't want to burn calories.

Well said. Sometimes the fact that people are judgmental, or even cruel, when compassion and love would achieve so much more, that leads tofeeling sad for the world. Knowledge of Ellie's background would be great to have. My biggie boy, who recently died at 16, had several food-related traumas that underlay his obsession with having an abundant supply of wet and dry foods available at all times. As adorable as this is (and make no mistake, it is), just a PSA for all cat owners out there: you can “love” (read: FEED) your cat to death by over feeding them. I hope these owners are able to get this sweet girl some diet food for weight loss before she experiences any complications 🥺
Yep morbidly obese cat faces arthritis, diabetes, fatty liver diseases, among other metabolic disorders. Controlled diet and an increase in exercise can do wonders. Just like for us humans.
it isn't just overfeeding but underaction. They need to play/hunt. Poor cat was probably just kept inside and hardly played with at all. Cats get depressed when you don't meet their needs and that can lead to excessive weight gain, which is bad for them just as much if not more than it is for people

I was hoping to hear her talk about the dangers of an obese cat and say something hopeful like “the owners are working on helping her lose weight” or something 🙁
A backstory would be nice. Did her previous/present owners do this to her. Was she a stray that just got taken in. Poor girl can't even try to get away from the blow dryer due to all that weight. She's young enough to thin her down.
Obese pets (who’s owners aren’t actively working with their vet to safely reduce their weight) really bum me out. It wasn’t mentioned in this video, but I hope her owners are taking steps to address the issue. ❤

I love Ally’s eye shadow and eyeliner. She really took some risks with those cat eyes.
The contrast of the small black fur spots gives Ally a sort of worried expression.
@@giggle_snort First, she needs to see a vet to make sure no underlying health issues are causing that obesity.
Yes to the vet visit to rule out underlying medical issue. Ask the vet for a diet plan - cats should not lose weight too quickly. She's a sweet girl.
I mean, he was a chunky boy before, but he was a normal weight and size.

since this is her first groom, naybe a new food regimen is going to happen. A new start !

I had a vet who improved an overweight cat she adopted by changing to a low-calorie diet, and making the cat change floors in the house to get to the food.
She got him down to the neighborhood of healthy weight in about a year.

As someone who has cohabitated with cats for the last 60 years, I want to tell you, as you have already seen, that Allie is an amazingly calm and accepting feline. Impressive behavior for a first groom.
Cats are wonderful
Coats are beautiful, but they are skinny and feel so light and hollow.😅
I don't get it.

Made a big difference in both her coat condition and her overall behavior - it was magnificent to see a confident, affectionate QUEEN emerging from that "I am indifferent to literally everything" shell.
that's awesome :D thank you for helping her
This makes me so happy, good on you. ❤
poor kitty, I hope she gets down to a healthy size soon
edit for the peanut gallery: please note that I didn't assign blame to the current owners nor make any assumptions about her current regimen.

Ally is a beautiful cat. Hopefully her owners are doing the right thing and getting her weight under control.
@@helenanilsson5666 I sure hope so. The dried poop part and the obesity made me so sad to realize how neglected that baby has been for her whole life.
Her fur and her patterning is remarkably beautiful! She's a striking looking cat. Her size just makes her stand out more! 😂

Sweet Allie was such a sweetheart with her first groom! What a good girl!
Poor little girl ❤ I hope she is being well looked after now. She is so sweet-natured and she deserves to live a long and healthy life. It’s not her fault she is overweight 😢
Such a sweet girl! She stayed calm the entire time 😍
That is one of the prettiest calico coats I've seen in a while, and the blue eyes were gorgeous too.
What a beautiful cat! I love her colors and markings. Poor Allie.
Now that was a well needed groom. She’s so pretty under all that stuff!
Dear owners, if you love your pet please keep him at a healthy weight level. EDIT: this is a general statement, not finger pointing at the current/previous owners.
Seriously, this is so cruel to her. I hope she's on a diet now.

Some cats just have metabolic issues, however: they stay fat no matter the diet. One of my three cats weighs 16 pounds, while her mama is as lanky as can be; my sister in law's cat is also a whopping 30+ pounds, even though she's fed diet food.
