To answer your question at 10:24, many of the remaining stores are probably just waiting out their leases before closing down. It would cost them more to break the lease in many cases, so they simply keep going with whatever little revenue they can get by operating.

I remember when they began building Fashion Square next to Sears. The first construction started in 1971 IIRC. I think the first anchor (other than Sears) was Burdines. The mall continued to grow (two additional major phases of construction over the decades) and eventually engulfed where the original external theaters (four screens) used to be. I saw Star Wars in 77 in that old, long-gone building. Fashion Square reached it's peak around the late 80s and began to decline in the mid to late 90s. I also remember going through the mall when I was a kid and teenager (late 70s through the 80s) and that place was PACKED to the gills with shoppers. In the early to mid-80s, finding a parking spot was actually difficult despite the huge size of the surrounding lots. So much so, that they eventually built a garage to help with the parking overflow. I also remember the huge Toys 'R Us that used to be adjacent to the mall. I believe it was replaced by a sporting goods store.

All the malls in the area are slowly dying. Seminole Town Center, West Oaks, Fashion Square, Oviedo. Altamonte Mall is the only one hanging on, and it’s barely hanging on, but at least most of the stores are occupied and it gets business. That’s the mall I live by and have gone to for most of my life.
Millenia mall is usually always booming but that’s because it’s smack dab in the middle of tourist town. I used to work there.

I've been to Fashion Square Mall numerous times. It was a very exciting mall and very full of business in the 1980's and 1990's. Once the nearby Orlando Navel Base closed, it seemed as if that mall began to lose its heart & soul. I remember seeing Navy personnel in there all the time when the base was open. And then when internet retailing began to take off, the mall began its long, slow, depressing, painful death.

I wish they could turn them into some kind of apartments or something, with an enclosed park like atmosphere with fountains and maybe a play area for the kids like when the mall was new. Living here in Florida, I've hated to see the malls being torn down and made into open shopping areas. It's miserable imo, in the summer you're out in the scorching heat or pouring rain, in the winter months you're getting beaten by the wind, and just trying to make your way across the parking lot without getting run over is a challenge. Nothing like the ease of strolling thru the malls in comfort with no worries of traffic and being able to sit on a bench and people watch. The food courts were so fun, too. The mall you covered in this video still looks so clean and in such good shape. It would be sickening to think about it just getting torn down. It's insane to think how much money it must have cost to build these places and maybe wouldn't even be possible today with what construction costs.

The oldest (no longer in existence) mall I know of in Orlando was the Colonial Mall (or Colonial Plaza Mall, depending on who you ask) that was at the corner of Bumby and Colonial Dr. (Hwy 50.) The central anchor of that mall was Jordan Marsh, which occupied what was then considered a monstrous four story building. And, no, the original Winter Park mall was NOT older, no matter how fondly you remember it. The Winter Park mall (which, admittedly, was an incredibly beautiful mall) opened in 1964. The first phases of the Colonial mall opened in 1956. That is why in old photos of the Colonial Plaza mall that fronted Colonial Dr. -the building facades appear very 50s style. Because they were! The Winter Park mall embraced a modernized cross between classical Roman and art deco design.

@@CruzingwithCruz I think we may have passed the point of no return. Kind of like the car allowed people travel and the rail transportation has died a painful death (another topic), I see it the same way with the malls. Technology has brought us down a different path - everything from social interaction on phones to retailers needing to be on-line to compete for market-share. The more popular that is, the less need for mall-based brick-and-mortar retail. The mom and pop shops only survived because of the anchors. Anchors move out, not enough foot traffic, everything else fails. It has to be rebuilt w all outdoor strip malls style of retail, easy access, etc, with very quick in-and-out.

Very sad to see it like this, was rhe ops manager for this mall from 2005-2012 but it was going downhill back then and was bought by UP development in 2013 and it really went downhill and they went bankrupt, the bank owns it now.
