Bravestarr Deep Dive

  • This one is a long time coming. When I was around 5 years old, my father taped some episodes of Bravestarr, and watching it is one of my earliest memories. Bravestarr is an astounding show, way ahead of its time and profoundly pro-values while also being staunchly anti-tyranny. In this video I discuss the fabulous furry characters who fill out the cast and rehabilitate the idea of Filmation's 'stock footage' system while giving some background details about the show.
I also spend some time drooling over Thirty-Thirty because I'm a red-blooded American woman.

That "but he eats quiche" thing is part of a whole 80s crisis in masculinity - typified by the "humour" book 'Real Men Don't Eat Quiche', from 82. I know I'd be happy to share a romantic quiche-based meal with Thirty-Thirty any day...

    • @FurryFoundFootage
      @FurryFoundFootage  5 месяцев назад +11

I forgot about that book! That puts it in even more perspective. Real men aren't babies who don't appreciate a good quiche. You kidding me, if a lumberjack comes in from a 12 hour shift you think he's going to turn his nose up at the quiche his wife made him? In some ways the crisis is even more cartoonish nowadays.

I clicked to see where the stud known as Thirty-Thirty came from, but was surprised to learn how incredible Bravestarr and Filmation were in portraying masculinity. Bravestarr openly complimenting Thirty-Thirty without having him get upset and 30-30 himself being shown taking care of his beautiful mane were delightful to see. The way Bravestarr challenges traditional masculinity is incredible and I wish that type of main character were more common. You mentioning that wars would be prevented if men could compliment each other can be seen as a funny throw-away line, but it's kinda true. If men weren't taught to be stoic beings that needed to dominate others in order to prove their manhood, then conflicts really wouldn't be that prevalent. Great video.

Oh I was looking forward to this! I grew up on Bravestarr. Kinda. I know I watched, and being a natural furry I would have been absolutely obsessed with 30-30. But it was the era of, you watched what tv put in front of you. Or you taped. It was mostly Voltron, MASK, and My Little Pony. But I've always had an appreciation for Filmation, and your retrospective was a joy to behold. Learning the behind the scenes stuff, and condensing all the messaging so we can appreciate it was excellent.
Now, this will probably be controversial but a free flow of ideas is the mark of a vibrant society. I think more of the villains or at least villain species needed to be painfully ordinary people. That's kind of a personal thing with me, because I've always been a bisexual furry (like, I was very aware of being bi literally forever) and a lot of villains in old cartoons were some level of furry, I wanted nice versions of them so you could have eye candy that also worked at the feed store or as a bricklayer or something. Like having Keatons and Blins living in Hylian villages in their own version of Little Italy or Chinatown and being vibrant members of societies. The Dingos could live in town, be normal guys, date earth women. Make up some Dingo girls and have families, or again, they could also date earth men. I just think that yes, it's hot when furries are villains. But it makes sustained lives tougher. And 30-30 is a hero, and he's still hot.

I know that the lesson address at the end of every episode may seem a little bit much to older viewers, but there was one episode's lesson that had a profound effect on me when I watched it as a kid. I can't remember the exact episode, but the lesson address had Skuzz, the cigar-smoking henchman of Tex Hex, talking about his smoking. I can't remember the exact wording he used, but it was essentially "I know this is killing me, but I can't stop". As a young kid, it gave me my first understanding of addiction regarding smoking. Bravestarr as a whole tackled some pretty heavy issues, yet did so in a way that other shows at the time didn't do as memorably.

    • @FurryFoundFootage
      @FurryFoundFootage  5 месяцев назад +2

I think the key thing about Bravestarr is that everyone involved really had their hearts in the right place. Filmation was lambasted for their emphasis on pro-social messaging, but I think these lessons helped a lot of young kids and still ring true.

I missed out on this series entirely. I saw some shows that tried to be inclusive of Native Americans and they were so bad. I dont remember them being offensive as I was too young to look for that, I just remember they were cheap looking and stupid, as well as pretty boring. It's hard to say if it was actually multiple shows I saw, or just one bad one, they all blur together. But I never saw Bravestarr. I never would have given it a chance after my past experiences. I came here to see how bad it could be and am so shocked to hear it was actually good! Really happy to have gotten such a great introduction to this show. I feel like I can maybe already call myself a fan of it, and it's such a shame I missed out on this back when it was new.
Reviews for old and forgotten shows are so damn important for this reason, so thankyou for this video, and hopefully the rest of your channel has more gems like this.

Wow this video really hits me in the feels. A lot of men today don't want to say they love another man cause "its gay" when love in of itself is caring for another person regardless of if they're a man or a woman. The whole notion that you have to be a man by being only strong without any semblance of kindness, understanding, emotions or feelings is sad. Today's men are being taught to only belittle those who are different or don't look the "right" way.
The show d its history really tells a lot about where one's priorities are between making an everlasting piece of media with passion or just making money cash grab with no heart in it whatsoever. I really appreciate what you do Aure to really show different pieces of media that even though I didn't grow up with; you show you have an appreciation for it! Keep doing what you do dear!

27:22 That's an italian ad, and yet I don't think to have ever seen the toys in stores back in the day, maybe also because, sadly, in Italy Bravestarr aired first too early in the morning , and later on smaller channels where the broadcasting times were especially messy except for news and football, which also made it hard to watch regularly or in its entirety.
Luckily I did manage to watch a few episodes, and I do remember having a good time especially when the dingos were on (I wonder why XD), as well as my sister calling Thirtythirty ThirtySIX (she was little), and a schoolmate of mine confusing the show with "DarkStar".
Those sure were better times for animation as a whole, and not just for the overall quality, but indeed also for the messaging.

As I've told you previously, my experience with Bravestarr is very limited. Shoot, I can't even really remember where I watched it years ago. I mostly just remember that one episode where Bravestarr's hero kills some guy; which features one of the most jarring tonal shifts when it cuts from Bravestarr saying this guy is wanted for murder, right to the opening credits. Yet still, you and your deep dives seems to always manage to reach far off corners of the mind and reinvigorate old memories. I'll have to check out the movie. It looks awesome. Keep up the good work.

Sometimes I feel I´m too old for movies (no matter if animated or not), but never old enough for THESE old bangers!
Since I was kid, I had never enough of cartoons with animal partners (or anthromorphic or furry - if you call them like that), which were plentiful. It stayed with me even after Cartoon Network stopped airing in my country (it was simply coded and it was end of old CN for me), so I was forced to watch Nickelodeon (German), which was great in the end. And I was able to understand two foreign languages as bonus.
Where was I, oh yes, animal partners stayed with me even today. And I can tell you, Thirty Thirty is embodiment of real life stallions - even the mellow ones can and WILL challenge you. Believe me, if they could talk human language, they would be like Thirty Thirty.
Fun little story: You know what´s their bane? Mares. I was spending a lot of time with one of the herd, so I was quickly accepted - you know, scritches and all that helped a lot, well and a new stallion was there, who wasn´t fine with that and tried to push me from them (they will try that, it´s not dangerous, but they are like moving wall), literally. Well, alpha mare wasn´t cool with that and was VERY furious, so she pushed him from me and gave him few pretty hard kicks. Then she returned to me and was simply like "You gave me scritches, remember, please continue".
So yeah, Thirty Thirty was hard as nails and couldn´t be more manly, but he had his good moments. Don´t know if they had somebody who had idea and transfered this from horse-like behaivour or men and horses aren´t that much different in this behaviour (which is more likely) xD
Cartoons might have made me furry and I wouldn´t be probably the only one. I just have different term for them, as I said, animal partners. I don´t think I´m a furry, becuse I don´t belong to any community, but I still belong to party of two hucul horses :) If you say, I´m a furry, I don´t think I would mind, though.

You literally mentioned Brave Stars posterior and then make a comment about film Nation being the G place to be in the 1980s LOL. I thought I was the only person that noticed little bits of meal on meal and you Endo in bravestar like the fight scene when bravestar and 3030 first meet a lot of us in the free community watching that as adults had a very different take on the fight scene LOL especially the scene after they're finished fighting and what it looks like when taken out of context;). Given you normally do more obscure stuff on the little surprised to see you touch on bravestar. I'm guessing at some point you've done a video on rock and roll if you haven't done one yet on rock and roll I really hope you get to watch it if I'm not mistaken it was made in Canada and it's a very rare piece of 1980s anthropomorphic material which was very adult borderline rock opera. I think I have a VHS copy of the Brave star movie and if I'm not mistaken I've got DVD copy. Been trying to get the DVD set without it being a bootleg. I got lucky at one point and got some 80s cartoon DVD sets in a dollar bin Believe It or Not several years ago box set to of Shira as an example and one of the box sets of He-Man I think I've got all the cops and Crooks DVDs the same way and the dic GI Joe box sets. Can't remember if I've got the film Nation Ghostbusters DVD set or not. Yeah I'm a child of the 80s and I didn't think I'd live long enough to see physical media going away. One of these days I'm going to have to break down and go through a couple hundred VHS tapes I've got here and cross checks see if there's anything there in the Obscure stuff that is furry that you may not have had cross your radar LOL I'm pretty sure you did super bear from Britain as an example which is a pretty deep cut. You'd be surprised how many anthropomorphic movies there were done in other countries like Britain that even by today's standards are pretty risque and more like therefore adults like the original Littles movie was heavily at all and gave a lot of us kids nightmares where the titular character Henry big was beaten and abused buy a caretaker even in prison and locked in the basement

I actually don’t mind he-mans design. They kinda made everyone more buff not just him. Hell orko(I can’t remember how to pronounce his name, the little wizard) is more buff. I don’t get any of that vibe at all it felt more like just a general design change then one that was made to cater to a particular group. If it was just him that changed it would make more sense.
I also wanna say I haven’t watched the new series just seen clips and saw the designs. I remember watching he man years ago on a retro channel and always interpreted it not as “manly man” and more as becoming stronger for the people you love and want to protect. Eh but that’s just my take, over analyzing shows made to sell toys is funny business

Update, I watched the first episode of the Netflix show art looks good. Writing….not good. Very poor did not get past the first episode the main female lead annoyed me so much. if my brother was presumed dead I wouldn’t start making it all about me and how I feel
I see what Netflix was typing to do and as a woman I despise pandering.

I have actually watched Bravestar recently (well we finished it a few months ago) with my friends. And honestly it was really fun, and at times INCREDIBLY UNHINGED! Like that episode where they showed a child OVERDOSE ON DRUGS AND SHOWED HIS GRAVE AT THE END OF THE EPISODE! You can never see this coming!

Honestly I am commenting because your thumbnail is amazing. Just..........wow, A+.
Thought if this is a channel about Furries, may I submit the following topics.
    1) Animalympics
    2) Fritz the cat
    3)Swat Cats
    4) Biker Mice From Mars
There are many other examples, but I feel these 4 are under the radar of most conversations of the..............genre?

How come every time there is a culture other than anything white, to depict it in any media in any way is "stereotyped"? The current environment seems to think that unless the culture is presented by whatever ethnicity is being represented, it is somehow invalid. Unless it's ridiculing or denigrating white people, which is fine. I've lived all my life in New Mexico, and as a kid, Bravestarr was pretty cool. There were many Navajo at my school, and nobody ever made fun of the show for anything other than it being goofy in spots. Kids are savagely vicious, but pissing on Bravestarr because the main character was an Indian wasn't even a thing. One of the Navajo kids even named his gelding 30-30. If anything, the representation of spirituality and animals sparked many kids, including myself, to talk to the indian kids about it. Contrary to popular belief, kids can actually be pretty smart(or used to be, anyway) and we all knew that it was a cartoon and indians couldn't just rub a magic amulet and run like a puma. But we DID ask about actual spiritualism, and it sparked an interest and appreciation for Native Spirituality I still have at 48. Bravestarr was hardly in the school zeitgeist like Transformers and GI Joe, but in the 70's & 80's, part of the curriculum in school was learning about native american tribes and culture, and things like fetishes(small stone carvings in the shape of animals that can provide some benefit like good fortune or strength), Kachina Dolls, the Horno, and the differences and similarities of the Zuni, Hopi, and Navajo tribes helped children(myself included) learn about these different cultures.
Stereotypes exist for a reason, and the leftist desire to remove any references to Native culture in any form, be it on a butter label or in a sportball team, succeeds only in removing it from view, and relegating their cultural significance into obscurity. I agree that **NEGATIVE** stereotypes are unproductive, but Bravestarr never played like that. It was a Filmation cartoon, which meant slick animation, attention to detail, lots of reused animation sequences, catchy music and characters that endure even 30 years later. I'm not a HUGE fan of the show, but it was definitely part of my childhood like He-Man, Ghostbusters, and Atari.

One thing that always confused me, is there's one episode [or maybe it's the movie] where 30/30 refers to himself as a "Techno Horse" I've never been sure if he's 'real' [You see him eat and drink] a Cyborg, Robot or what ? also his Tiara thing is like a antenna for a communicator he sometimes uses

Yeah they got a ton of flak about that and to this day still one of those *bad* episodes, like the panda-la episode in talespin.

26:41 We sure the creators of the Bad Guys movie didn't watch this episode?
Also for Vipra, I kinda hate how every time there's an anthropomorphized woman in media they have to look attractive to the point where they look less anthropomorphic. It's a creativity thing if you're going to make a hybrid make them look like a hybrid, also not every female character has to be attractive, and being attractive is subjective. Like the male anthros can look weird, but the ladies are usually hot, Beast from the X-Men can always talk about society never accepting him and how isolated he feels, but you apply it to a woman she's always written as wanting to find love.

    • @FurryFoundFootage

I totally agree, considering there's a perfectly furry snake person design in this show, it's odd that she didn't get the same treatment. That said, I still love her, she's ridiculous.
