Hmm...this book about gender and the soul turned out to be about something broader, ie, theoria or the soul's spiritual journey of katharsis, illumination, phrenoma, theosis. Any of the many struggles or ills in the soul can find help on this universal path of healing.
When dealing with the distracting and disturbing inner noise of inordinate appetites, disproportionate emotions, distorted thoughts, and delusional beliefs, becoming as inwardly quiet and as objectively aware as possible is beneficial by preventing the awareness' attention from getting caught up in them, getting carried away by them, being perturbed by them, or being disturbed by them. Instead of the mind's attention getting lost amidst the trees in the forest, the awareness hovering from above like an eagle doesn't lose sight of the forest's layout. The mind can then find its way out of the deep, dark woods below. The awareness can hover over the drama occuring in the soul maintaining a broad perspective or not losing its perspective. The mind which loses perspective is like a pharisee who strains for gnats yet swallows camels.
It's also like sitting in a busy subway watching the countless people coming and going and the many trains arriving and leaving, yet not getting carried away with the passengers pushing their way unto the trains and being carried away by those trains. The emotions push and pull like a crowd of peers to be carried away on a train of thoughts to arrive at a destination far from home. This heightened awareness keeps the mind at a healthy objective distance from emotions and thoughts.
The awareness of the mind is the spirit of the soul. It can become heightened like the Spirit hovering over the formless waters of precreation. Inner illumination or enlightenment can occur as the awareness hears the Logos' words, "Let there be light". The soul can become recreated. The Logos can put the reason or logos of the mind back in order. No longer inordinately attached to the flesh's appetites and emotions, the heart can then be healed. No longer perturbed, the heart's ill will no longer disturbs the spirit or awareness of the soul to attend to ill desires. The heart no longer disturbs the logos or reason of the mind to labor to satisfy inordinate desires. The soul finds its peace (shalom) and rest (sabbath).
The ill will's vicious cycle gets broken. Ill emotions provoke ill thoughts which reinforce more ill emotions and a bad disposition. Instead a virtuous cycle of good will of healthy emotions evoking good thoughts which reinforce peaceful emotions or a good disposition (eudaimonia) replaces it. Paul unidentified from the sin in him. Christ delivered him from himself. He said he found the secret to contentment whether he found himself in favorable or unfavorable conditions. His happiness was conditional on his circumstances. God's grace was sufficient for him as he listened for an answer to his heart's desirous prayer. Desire and aversion (negative desire) attach the heart to the flesh, shackling each leg to the lowly ground. Grace and gratitude (eucharistic thanksgiving) break the chains that bind. The spirit can then gain a heightened perspective and soar above like an eagle .
