  • In his published diaries Alan Clark portrayed himself as a charming rascal. Those who knew him remember him differently.

    i read his book...
    even though i detest all politicians with every fibre of my being...
    his diaries were very amusing.

      I found myself in the same mind set where Clark was concerned but he was in essence in his own words and deeds a verminous, trigger happy, self promoting selfish cad.

    I read his diaries. He is candid enough to recount the story of his attempting to undermine his boss at MoD Tom King by going over his head to Thatcher - the ruse failed yet King just carried on as if nothing had happened - which utterly floored Clark - King's impassiveness was in stark contrast to his own scheming, vengeful, deceitful and malicious personality - the product of upbringing as much as anything - in the Johnson mould

    Thanks for posting this up. I remember watching this. I think I even had it on VHS off of broadcast at one time. It's a fascinating piece on this controversial figure of British life.

    Appalling as he could be, he had a self-awareness and an intellectual depth that Johnson et al totally lack.

    How did a man as refined as Kenneth Clarke ever spawn a son as utterly repulsive and morally bankrupt as Alan Clark? On the plus side I found his diaries compulsive reading.

    Typical Eton constraints of character, moulded, but almost rebellious of that same system of turning out supposed leaders "slack bob" very apt.

    Toffs like him with no experience of life other than Eton and Oxford university should never have been made MP's.

      As it was said in the documentary, it was regarded as rather a big game. No need to put much thought into representing people.

    Maybe it's the "Mandela Effect", but I am sure that I remember this program covering the "Not Alan Clark Diaries" incident, when he sued the Evening Standard over the satirical faux diaries column they used to run when he returned into politics - I am sure I remember Max Hastings(the then editor) as a talking head commenting on that.

    • @zeddeka
      @zeddeka 9 месяцев назад

      It matters very much. We have a conservative party full of Alan Clarks now. It has destroyed our country. Let's also not forget that the man clearly had paedophilic tendencies too. All in all, he was the epitome of the nasty Tory. Grossly narcissistic and an expert groomer - not just of 13 year olds, but also the wider public.
