      Agree. When they play with toys they imagine stuff, interact in real life. With screens they become mindless zombies while watching.

    • @nomore6167
      @nomore6167 24 days ago +35

      Additionally, it's not the screens, but what they are doing on those screens. Social media, doomscrolling, etc. And don't even get me started on the stupidity and degradation of language skills due to their use of text-speak. If they were using the screens for educational purposes, I guarantee the results would be far different.

      @junglefan1998 27 days ago +9

      @yaelfeder9042 I remember learning somewhere that the common phrase "our brains become fully developed around the age of 25" was false - because our brains actually keep "developing" until into our 30s. But I think that's even "developing" in the context of "maturing" (i.e. improving). At certain ages (60s I think) then you start to experience some levels of decline. Even without any of these facts (or I think they're facts, confirm yourself), I think it's just the case in general that the brain always is very "adaptable".

    I think the real issue in these extreme cases isn’t the screens themselves, but the lack of meaningful interaction during the most important stages of a child’s development. Four to seven hours of iPad time a day for a young child is excessive by any standard, and it often reflects situations where kids aren’t getting the engagement they need. My own children had measured, age‑appropriate exposure to iPads from early childhood, and both are excelling academically and taking advanced courses, have social lives, and participate in sports. This reinforces what many experts say: most things, when used in moderation and balanced with real‑world interaction, aren’t harmful. Screens can be useful tools, but they’re not substitutes for parenting.

      @tomoyochan92 7 days ago

      That's awesome 👍🏻 For your kids, did they mostly interact with the devices for fun or mostly for learning or both? And did you have a process for venting the content? Or just the age rating?

    • @Sorry-Sir_butNah
      @Sorry-Sir_butNah 6 days ago +2

      @tomoyochan92I think it’s hard to say per child. You can’t look at another and put the same restrictions. In a perfect world maybe.
      The big thing is to increase play that doesn’t involve flashing lights of any kind, limiting screen time to when you have screen time.
      If you think your kids intake is obsessive yours maybe as well
      Age rating only works to a degree. Some kids are more mature than others and can handle the imagery and symbolism in media.
      The only thing I’d say is no social media until the kid is at least 13-16 as was the standard when I was growing up set by the companies running them.
      Video games are better pass time than phones and videos. They keep your brain conditioned and have been shows to actually make reaction time and coordination better.
      Everything In moderation even moderation

      I'm afraid that is demonstrably NOT the case. Although lack of real life stimulus is absolutely detrimental to development, exposure to screen time IN AND OF ITSELF is profoundly damaging to young brains and that fact must not be minimized!

    • @medcat1184

      I’d push back on that a bit. The research doesn’t really support an absolute ban on screens in schools. What matters most is how screens are used, not simply whether they exist. When screens replace active learning, social interaction, or play, they can be harmful. But when they’re used intentionally (for example, to support learning, show visual concepts, or encourage discussion with a teacher), they can be a useful educational tool. A blanket ban risks throwing out the benefits along with the problems. Thoughtful limits and high-quality, age-appropriate use are likely more effective than an all-or-nothing approach✌🏻

    • @stuckgrenadepin.225
      @stuckgrenadepin.225 Day ago +2

      I would say that the biggest differences between tv back in the day and tablet/phones these days is when the use started. These days kids are using tablets/phones as toddlers. And as an offshoot of that is the brain chemistry change that comes from use. The instant gratification, the dopamine/cortisol fluctuations, the rabbit holing from apps like reddit, etc…they all keep children from meaningful interaction with people which is necessary for proper development of the brain.

      Myopia development has more to do with staying indoors too much. The lack of eye exposure to sunlight has been heavily shown to affect eye development. Reading and screen time is more a correlation. The actual causesation is a lack of sunlight in the eyes (not directly staring into the sun obviously, just indirect)

      I agree with you 1000%. They would’ve found the exact same types of changes when the television was invented. Kids use phones for some incredible things. My kids are teenagers and they’ve been on phones much of their lives. They use them to create music. They use them to create art. My youngest taught herself to read well at the age of three during the pandemic because she wanted to be able to communicate with other older kids that were friends with my son.
      This is the new world these kids live in and believe it or not, it’s going to be OK. These apps facilitate their social life. Their friends are on them. They communicate. They share information. You’re not putting the genie back in the bottle.

      "My sister and I were just talking today about why it seems the whole world is anxious. We suspected devices" - It's not devices. At least not the physical devices. It's what people are doing with those devices. In other words, it's social media. That's the problem, not "screen time". We had plenty of "screen time" in the 80s and 90s, but no social media. Once modern social media came about (Facebook, Twitter, etc), that's when everyone -- of all ages -- started becoming stupider, more anxious, more divisive, more argumentative, etc.

    Not arguing this, but the small amount of data shared here may be misleading. The graphs showed too short a window to actually determine patterns, so based only on what was shared here, we can only claim correlation, not causation. But like I said, I’ve been persuaded that this is an issue even before encountering this video. I would love to see the actual studies and data.

No depth -- just a skip rock approach to science.

      This is why I am curious of the sample size and where they came from. Too often they're isolated groups of people. And sure their might be truth to the video but I completely agree with you that often times the kids who are addicted to screens suffer from poor diet too. And it's a vicious cycle for those kids because with poor diet comes struggle to pay attention and an overload of energy the kids cannot regulate, which makes it harder for parents to break the cycle and are more likely to give in. And it's sad because unfortunately many parents just... don't understand this. At all.
