I figured if the witches use trochaic tetrameter, which is the opposite of iambic pentameter, it could be Shakespeare trying to tell us that the witches are the opposite of noble! Therefore foreshadowing Macbeth's perilous impending doom, since he listened to their prophecies.
Vito Cipponeri because Trochaic Tetrameter sounds like DUM-da DUM-da DUM-da and is only used by witches whereas Iambic Pentameter sounds like da-DUM da-DUM da-DUM and is used only by noble characters. Therefore Iambic Pentameter is presented as noble as it’s only used by noble characters whereas Trochaic Tetrameter is purely used by witches

The witches stating "Fair is foul and foul is fair" could also suggest that they, supernatural beings viewed with hatred and fear, are actually merely trying to warn Macbeth and save him from his own fate.
We can't really say that as the witches actually started this whole issue of killing Duncan. If they hadn't appeared, Macbeth's life would go on without the issue of killing Duncan. This only erupted when the ambition inside Macbeth came to life when the witches mentioned their last prophecy of Macbeth being the king of Scotland
"deepest and darkest desires" - it is evident that Macbeth's ambition was not spurred by bearded women, but instead explored (then rejected pretty swiftly within 2 scenes) meaning that Macbeth always had an issue of regicide. Developing on a point - Noble characters speak in imambic pentameter, however the witches speak in trochaic tetrameter, the opposite of iambic pentameter, which suggests the witches and in turn Macbeth who listens to their prophecies, are the opposite of noble. Furthermore, Macbeth's speech in trochaic tetrameter may be used to reinforce the theme of everything not being as it seems, which reflects his untrustworthiness demonstrated by the regicide. This implies that people are not always what they seem at face value (e.g., Macbeth being a brave nobleman) but are more defined by their actions. Therefore, Shakespeare may be using Macbeth to warn King James to be wary of his noblemen, who may wish to overthrow him due to his religious beliefs and sexuality.

Hi there Mr Bruff i was just wondering does Macbeth ever in the play talk in Trochaic Tetrameter?? Cause if he did then would that foreshadow Macbeth is slowing turning to the dark side like the witches?? Thank you soo much for all of your work! It is helping me so much with my english! Xx
he never did but he did speak in rhyme like the witches right before killing duncan he said "the bell invites me Hear it not duncan for it is a knell that summons thee to heaven or to hell"
One question: if trochaic tetrameter is four pairs of syllables, then it seems the the final (eighth) syllable is often carried over to the following line? For example, 'Fair is foul and foul is fair" is seven syllables, whereas "Hover through the fog and the filthy air" is ten syllables - if you count "and" as well syllable, (maybe "and" doesn't count??).
Sometimes there are seven syllables for the witches, where it seems like the last syllable on a line is left out, but it’s still referred to as trochaic tetrameter (catalectic). The second line you’ve referred to is eight syllables- you’ve added another word. The word ‘hover’ is one syllable. ‘Hover through the fog and filthy air’ is eight syllables.
I think the witches use rhyming couplets, which mimics a nursery rhyme, to hint to the audience that their prophecies that they are going to tell Macbeth entirely be true like nursery rhymes
my teacher told me to use the format: Point Evidence Explain Language Effect (+another interpretation) Reflect (on point) is this a good format to use for an a* as that is what my target is or is there a better structure?
J Winfield Try why the writer has does what they have. For example, why that have ordered the words a certain way (the syntax) or why they've used certain punctuation. For Act 1, Scene 1, comment on the rhyming couplets and the way the witches talk in sibilance too. P.E.E.L isn't enough to get A* grades. You need to look for both explicit (obvious views) and implicit (not clear) views.
Noble Charters speak in Iambic Pentameters (5 stressed (where you bring the emphasis) and 5 unstressed syllables so 10 syllables) whereas the witches speak in trochaic trimeter, this could be Shakespeare’s frame of reference of the witches and highlighting the 2 opposing positions and linking it back to Macbeth’s demise because he was tainted by the witches and their prophecies, and after being slain by Macduff, a noble, Shakespeare further more implied that the royals will always reign and evil will always fail. did i do well?
Hi, I was wondering if you can interpret other ideas about the given question. for example, if it asked to show how Shakespeare presents lady Macbeth is the rest of the okay, would I be able to analyse her relationship with Macbeth? Secondly, if it was to do with fate, could I basically talk about the witches power and if they truly were powerful or if it was wisdom(as Banquo thinks)??
Are we allowed to use all the points that you have made throughout these series or will that be considered plagiarism, I am worried that using these points is going to get me disqualified. And can someone clarify what is considered plagiarism

Macbeth is a best tragedy by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare is greatest dramatist in English drama. In this drama we find that macbeth is the king of England . He wanted to become the king of Scotland and
You're right! Let me explain the usage of the terms ‘Elizabethan’ and ‘Jacobean’ to describe the times in which Shakespeare lived and wrote. Queen Elizabeth’s reign, the Elizabethan era, was from 1558 to 1603 while the Jacobean era, the reign of King James I, lasted from 1603 to 1625. Shakespeare himself lived from 1564 to 1616. It’s clear that Shakespeare’s formative years were during the Elizabethan era. This is when his views and ideas were formed and when he started out in his career as a playwright. Macbeth itself, however, was written and first performed in the Jacobean era. In this video series, the terms will often be used together to refer to a shared attitude or perspective as there was little immediate change from the end of one era and the beginning of the other. When writing specifically about Macbeth, students should use the term ‘Jacobean’.
I figured if the witches use trochaic tetrameter, which is the opposite of iambic pentameter, it could be Shakespeare trying to tell us that the witches are the opposite of noble! Therefore foreshadowing Macbeth's perilous impending doom, since he listened to their prophecies.

2 question how is a trochaic tetrameter opposite of an iambic pentameter and how does an iambic pentameter show someone is noble

I made notes on this video so thought I might as well share
Act 1 Scene 1
.Shakespeare uses the witches as a way of pulling the audience in
."When shall we three meet again?" in the Elizabethan times the witches would've been a huge draw for audiences as there was a big interest & belief in witchcraft & supernatural activity
.The witches' meeting is complete so Macbeth is clever as this prompts up curiosity about their role
.Helps to set the scene- a dark world where there's confusion & everything's not as it seems, a recurring theme
.The difference between appearances and reality
.Most of the important points in Macbeth are based on this contrast between appearance and reality
."Fair is foul and foul is fair
Hover through the fog and the filthy air." - reinforces the idea that this is a frightening, mysterious world where the supernatural hold some power
.Macbeth wants to establish that the dark atmosphere is of great significance
FORM AND STRUCTURE
.Witches speak in rhyming couplets- gives a sinister air to the play {nursery rhyme but darker}, difficult to interpret effect of witches now in 21st century (rhyming seems silly and childish)
.Shakespeare chose different styles of language to signify the importance or rank of the person speaking
-->noble characters: Iambic Pentameter (5 stressed & 5 unstressed syllables in a line alternating e.g. And fixed his head upon our *battlements)
-->witches: Trochaic Tetrameter (same as above but it's stressed then unstressed, Tetrameter means there are 4 pairs e.g. Fair is foul and foul is fair) sometimes there are 7 syllables for the witches

Is it only the witches that speak in Trochaic Tentameter
Yes
i thought it was during the Jacobean times?
