How to get more babies in a hatch. I wanted to hatch as many call ducks as i could but was worried she couldn't handle that many eggs.
If they have to many eggs, she wont be able to keep them all warm enough and the cold eggs will keep getting rotated around with the warm ones and that can kill the babies.... SO if you have something else that's broody... pawn them off. When the babies hatch take them away and give them back to the original mother. Ducks cant count (haha, stupid ducks) so she'll never know!
they can but many people prefer to be safe than sorry :) when they have more eggs, they usually don't all get equally "warmed" and end up not hatching. One time we let our duck try to hatch out all her 12 eggs and only about half hatched because they kept getting moved around and only got partial heat. By just removing a few eggs you give the remaining ones a higher chance of all hatching :) hope that makes sense

Yeah you are right, because the amount of warmth that the outer eggs get is not the same amount of warmth that the inner eggs get and therefore the outer eggs have a reduced chance of survival.

Ducks of that size often hatch up to 11 eggs with no problem. If you really want to increase the brood size, take them when the clutch is incomplete. The mother will carry on laying eggs in many cases.

Average amount of eggs ducks can lay are around 5 to 12 sometimes 14. For Chickens up to 25 or more or less. Anyway it also depends on how many ducks or chickens use that one nest.

Your birds are so tame! If even open the stabledoor when my duck is breeding, she goes nuts and hisses at me. Then again, I don't mind to badly. I hope that to be a good sign for her protective instict. But still: respect!

Don't the ducks imprint on the hens ? Or do you move the eggs back during hatching ? I presume incubator raised fowl imprint on the farmer ?

hey. i was hoping you might have some advice, i have a 3? day old duckling that was laying on the side of the road. i think it was hypothermic yesterday. we didn't think it would live through the night... anyway. do you have advice on how to hand feed a 3? day old duckling? i'm not finding very useful information so far. and i think my best bet is to message people who raise ducks... i'm off to cross my fingers and hope someone logs on soon and replies.

what i didn't get was why separate 4 eggs between 2 cochins? Even a bantam could hatch 4 eggs. I feel bad that they won't get "un"broody to raise the ducks they hatched.

I use to do that to my hens only so they don't die half way thru developement, also many baby chicks attract a lot of mangoose.. so why not take few away and eat them

how did you manage to have them imprinted on the duck? I saw ducklings following chickens and chickens going crazy when they go in the water, they fish the ducklings out as soon as they come near dry land and make a hell of a noise... so sad...

My duck never hatch successfully...she always get out when she saw other chicken trying to lay eggs in her nest and take broken glass ,nails,and pointy rocks and put it in the nest and start chasing all the chicken around...she get into a rampage mode causing terror ..and when it happen one or two eggs hatch the duck die with the sharp object or get crush ...the poor father always visit the nest like every 2 to 3 days and when he saw dead duck chick u could serve him sad 😌😌...he sit down in the middle of my backyard and watch at other hen chick with their mother sadly and let the chicks approach or jump on him
