  • Ostrich is almost a forgotten feather, as there is a misconception that it's fragile. Okay, it's not a guide fly material, but it's a little tougher than you may think and moves wonderfully well in the water. I won't leave a material list for this super quick pattern, as it's really only ostrich and bucktail used. Hook choice is up to you depending what you are fishing for and where.

Thanks Paul, really enjoyed that vid! I bought a bunch of ostrich herls in various colors but have been hesitant to use them because so many people called them ‘too fragile’ for pike. Going to give it another go and many thanks for your contributions!

Just found your channel. Great tutorial and great looking fly.
With the teeth pike have seen any material might be "too fragile".

I believe it was Kanalgratis (or maybe Brammer) that showed a way to do replaceable rear sections. Seems like that would be handy for Bulkheads. Use ostrich, saddles, flashtails, whatever on the rear with maybe one set of bucktail. Replace as necessary when worn and/or do some color swapping tom foolery.

I used to fiddle about and do it with tubes on the backend. Life's too short just tie another fly

Loving all the flies you tie. When you fish for pike what kind of tippet do you use? I'm just getting back into tying and I do alot of smallmouth bass fishing on rivers.I normally just use mono 4 or 6 lb.

Yes I tie them on tubes occasionally but those tend to be really big flies
