MESHUGGAH is:
Jens Kidman - Vocals
Fredrik Thordendal - Guitars
Tomas Haake - Drums
Mårten Hagström - Guitars
Dick Lövgren - Bass
Lyrics:
Nostrum
Jealous vengeful fabrication
Halo-crowned invention
Sacred universal lie
Artificial divine
Great archaic obsoletum
A prevarication
Deceitfully contrived
Synthesized fictitious
Dreamed up by remote prototypes
Opiate for the yearning mass
Administered applied
Three letter word for monster
Empty promises of healing
Profit aptly buried in the lies
An industry rapt with avarice
Medicating blind
Its acolytes
Useless panacea
Imaginary cure-all
To you we cry and supplicate
Into your hell we fall
Blind belief in their eyes
Forever atoning, credulously waiting
Gazing to the skies

HAUAHUAHAUAHAUHAUAHAUHAA Best comment
you sir are now president of youtube
tell me about it...and mittens
Top comment. Top kek
That, sir, may be the absolute best comment I've ever seen on RUclips.
Haake T-800 model. Cybernetic organism. Living tissue over metal endoskeleton.
That was on point, where did you get the info?
It's classified information!
You will soon recieve some important phonecalls, be prepared.
You're NOT supposed to write these kind of things on RUclips etc.
Living tissue over metal metronome.
His endoskeleton isn't made of metal, it's made of pure djentium
😂
Ryu Kan Haake T-1000 Fluid Metal hahahaha
he is really determined that no one ever cover this song!!
troy wright will do it, hes capable
With how much snare there is in this song, Troy is going to cover the hell out of it. He loves this stuff.
when i said no one i meant Haake too can't cover this song
+Red Rully you aware of Troy Wright's band Plini? It is freaking awesome!! I was pleasantly surprised by it when they opened for Animals As Leaders. I had no idea Troy Wright was in a band until I discoverd the musical miracle that is Plini
Plini is fucking beautiful. Saw them open for Ne Obliviscaris a couple years ago. Instantly feel in love with them
how do you think I'm supposed to even begin to table-drum this
You just go apeshit and enjoy those few beats you get right.
DED!!!
+Krigarar hahaha that summarizes my sessions of Meshuggah jamming
Buy a table
Just stick to kiddie launchpads for good measure.
"Yeah these slippers are pretty great, I use them as a crash."
- Thomas Haake
Why’s this not the top comment 😂
22" ride is a crash
@@lilspicytuna took me a couple of seconds to figure that one out. So funny. 😂
Those slippers are more metal than I will ever be
Take note: No ride cymbal, plays two hats at once, bigger hi-tom than snare, and only one hi tom, and his drum work is still getting better in each album. Wow.
Not to be that guy, but the rack tom and snare are the same size. But I agree none the less!
Jacob Agee
good spotting tho :)
what's your point? tom size affects/enhances playing skills?
Fernando Langhahn
Point is it's unusual for metal drummers.
*****
Lars Ulrich - No care
I just started playing drums. Is this a good beginner song to learn?
yeah man. pretty easy
faaarrrh Is it really? I'm trying to learn from the video but it's hard to get the hang of what he's playing :/
Your joking right? You couldn't cover this if you only practiced this song for the rest of your life , try Metallica bro
im joking. its fucking solid
yeah bro this guy is kinda a drum genius most great drummers would struggle with this
I'm a BASSIST with over 30 years of Jazz and Theory training and I'm jealous of that.
I've never seen a more MECHANICAL style sound so awesome.
mechanical indeed... destroy erase improve
isnt it badass
@@keimokuula9852 win
Also live they are capable of playing this so tight and clean, you really have to visit a concert after Corona (hope it ends somewhen, so i can see them). They really have very professional Sound and Light-Technicians, best concert i was ever listening and seeing, i highly recommend it (I'm a drummer myself for about 20 years now)
Progressive heavy metal my friend.
The brutal equivalent of Jazz
This man is 45 years old. The metal drumming GOAT!
Anthony Ghazel He plays better than most half his age.
He's had time to practice. Or what do you mean?
@@ajkorras didn’t mean nothin’ by it..
50 now and even better
I would say he has the most enviable skill-set in the entire genre. Pocket, chops, poly-rhythm expert, endurance... he's got it all and then some.
I can't stop looking at slippers hahaha. Love this band!!
Those slippers are so metal \m/
I didn't notice those until I read this comment. Now I can't stop looking at them!
So do I.... and imagining then some members recording in pyjamas.
gezos kreist..... :-D
btw, I absolutely love how Tomas does this insane thing with kinda minimalistic drumset. :)
Don't know if I would call that a minimalistic setup?! At least not compared to what Dillinger escape plan does with like a third of that.
Never listened to any Meshuggah tracks before, never knew the band, any material, live, studio, anything. This video made me a fan
Everything after and Including the None EP.
destroy erase improve is amazing. one of the best tours i have been to .. and that was a ways back at this point
duuude check them out! they are an insanely talented and unique band.
implying Contradictions Collapse inst worth listening to? LOL
Shit, you've got a lot of awesome ahead of you OP
The equivalent of Bleed with the hands
ikr
Intro is similar to Pravus
Yes, someone felt this...ah.
@@Mitchell550no it isn't? In Pravus there's a 1-2-1-3 1-2-1-4 rhythm. Here it's even more uneven. Idk if I'm correct but that is called a syncopated rhythm.
I am a professional drummer, formally trained in Jazz and Latin percussion, and play progressive and extreme metal, with years of onstage and studio experience... I still struggle to play a lot of this man’s time signatures and off beat fills and ghost strokes... Dude is on another level!! His ambidexterity is fucking ridiculous, and he makes it look effortless!!!
Craziest part, he did not learn anything formally. He doesn't do sheet music nor know how to read it. He gets all these ideas and put them on program and practice on the drumset
Tomas while writing the song: Little shits covering my songs like it's nobody's business, let's see them try to play THIS...
I just removed my like on this video so that I could like it again. Haake is God.
dat don't make no sense!
Danny carey and Thomas Haake gods on earth
God is Thomas Lang.
Those Bart slippers though...
I was loling at the slippers this whole time lololol
I couldnt stop staring at Bart haha, he stole the show.
Haha! I would love to see Tomas play the drums in those!
it crocodile i guest IMO
this is for the hands what Bleed was for the feet!
Well said
These graphics for Drumkit from Hell have gotten amazing
Underrated meme
jackcring well thomas haake created so fare enough
Siiiiiiick Tomas fy fan!!!
Hahahahaha Dirk
Lol Dirk :D let's not pretend you're an average drummer, Deconstruction still leaves me with my mouth opened every time.
But yeah, Tomas is of this world.
DirkVerbeurenDrummer
Meshuggah reinventing its own genre, and Tomas Haake performing a drum part more impressive than 99,99 % of drum solos. I finally love 2016.
Holy shit. He plays so fluid and easily... really impressive.
And the Bass-Player Dick Lovgren is playing Guitar in the Background with Bart Simpson Flippers... How can you not live these guys!?
I thank my lucky stars that I was alive and witnessed when Meshuggah roamed the earth.
Totally agree
Who the fuck disliked this??? Finger must've slipped
They're probably jealous that they don't have such a badass pair of Simpsons slippers.
I know I am.
They don't know how to Meshuggah
Jealous retards dislike videos
Someone who doesn't know anything about drumming! Tomas Haake is amazing!
Thank Odin for this band.
Im a guitarist myself, so I dont know a lot about the drums. But I know a bad ass when I hear one. Haake is one of the drummers that makes me want to go get a nice set of drums and start learning.
The very first time I heard Meshuggah was at Ozzfest 2002 in San Diego. I had never heard of them before. So I'm leaning against this brick wall smoking a cigarette when I hear and feel this insane rumbling coming from behind me. Then I hear 2 or 3 random double bass drum rolls, followed by this insane death threat in the form of a growl/scream that would have made any Marine Corps Drill Instructor proud. Then (I would later ID this song) "Straws Pulled at Random" began pulsing through the air as gracefully as an avalanche of boulders tumbling down the side of a mountain, leaving scars to mark their territory. Three people were carried out of the venue on stretchers during the hour long Meshuggah set alone. The pit had three levels. The inner most part was hauling ass in a clockwise direction. The middle "layer" was hauling ass in a counter-clockwise direction. And the outer layer was hauling the most ass in another clockwise direction. Not a single person was in the center. This wasnt a moshpit. It was a vortex....a VIOLENT vortex. This was my first Meshuggah experience.
Dude I hope you write, cos I'd buy.
Fucking sick, thanks for sharing
It’s had an opposite effect on me, I will never bother attempting drums now. Stick with my strings! 😅
the day meshuggah stop playing, that go to be a sad sad day for me . Tomas is the best ever
This guy must have ate his spinach when he was younger
Bugger that he ate Popeye!
"Djent" does not = Meshuggah. All the bands that fall under "Djent" are just trying to Meshuggah and they can't even Meshuggah. Not necessarily saying all those bands suck, but THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE!!!
All hail the kings of the genre I've always known as.... Meshuggah.
hahahahahhaha new genre of metal Meshuggah.
what do you play?
a kind of progressive meshuggahcore
You should check out Vola! They're Meshuggah from the heavens
3:30 sounds like Meshuggah went all Super Mario! And its AWESOME
that was epic!! xD
3:30=330=33-0=THIRTYTHREE.
Tomas Haake and Danny Carey are responsible for maintaining the accuracy of the universe's clock and the earth's rotation consistent. Screw the atomic clock, these 2 men are the metronome of the universe.
"This video is unlisted. Be considerate and think twice before sharing."
FUCK NO ima share it!
This has become one of my favourite songs from Meshuggah.
The more one actually listens to what they are doing, without getting *too carried away*, the more one realises how truly revolutionary they are. It's astonishing. So glad to have seen them live twice. Beyond amazing with the lightshow. If you haven't seen them, do.
Why the emphasis on “too carried away”?
@@TTGTanner I have to remain a bit calm amidst the storm of incredible sounds rhythms and visuals. Why? I am 74 and need to pay attention. Peace.
Wow.
Dick's Shoes... rofl amazing
I just lost the shit. Can't stop laughing.
This man is just who everybody strives to be... Viking looks, army trained, committed and driven, insane drummer, amazing lyricist, humble and down to earth good human being!
Damn, that solo, its almost as if there's NOSTRUMming at all.
get out
hahahahaha
Tomas is just amazing.
I can't imagine Meshuggah without him.
Still the only "djent" band worth any sort of a damn.
Why isn't it djent? Is it some sort of other metal style or are you just being one of those opinionated ignorant metal fans?
Every djent band is almost completely inspired by the likes of Meshuggah, or bands inspired by Meshuggah, but Meshuggah is not djent. K.
Metal Vault It's just a retarded label that refers to the whole wave of bands who went the whole poly-rhythmic-low-tune-chug-fest route trying their hardest to be as technical or more so than Meshuggah. I just kinda feel like Meshuggah was the only band that really got it right.
schwarg I think Monuments and Tesseract did a good job. Vildhjarta was sort of hit and miss... Periphery's impressive, but not my style. Otherwise, yeah. I'd say the bulk of those bands were trash.
Vilsjarta sounds more like deathcore :/
But aal and textures are doing it right imo
How a band this far along in their career can create something so breathtaking is just downright impressive. I'm glad Meshuggah has stayed true to the sound and has always been about the music.
Another important thing about this video: it is a lesson in drumming ergonomics - notice how relaxed he is - the top view show eh is not over reaching for anything. Everything is easily accessible without extending his arms, which explains why he doesn't tire out easy after playing all that at full bore. Brilliant drummer, easy going and humble just like all of us should be.
His playing is as smooth as butter. I should have brought some toast...
Absolutely fucking AMAZING. His technique is so relaxed and powerful, and his coordination and creativity to not only compose but execute drums parts like this is freaking INSPIRING AS FUCK. God DAMN IT I love this band
Tomas hakee is one of the baddest drummers out there right now period.
3:44 OMG. And correct me if I'm wrong, but has he got total independance of each arm and leg at 0:39 ?
his right arm and left leg (both high-hats) is going with the 4/4 beat. the rest is doing other stuff. I think... lol
The rest is Haaking out
His hands and feet are playing to the bass guitar, the up and down beat are just switched up a lot so it sounds wacky. This isn’t one of their more polyrhythmic songs. Their weirdest polyrhythms are on Koloss I think. It sounds more simple, but Haake plays in three separate time signatures at once multiple times on the album (chorus of I am coloss off the top of my head), albeit much slower than this album.
Tomas and Meshuggah always set the standard
the zoidberg slippers are amazing
Aren't they Bart Simpson?
Yes, it's Bart Simpson, not Zoidberg.
why not Zoidberg?
#1: Because Zoidberg is orange/pink, whereas Bart is yellow (like the slippers).
#2: Because Zoidberg has a flat head, whereas Bart's has hair spikes (which the slippers also have).
This track ‘Nostrum’ is one of my favorite ones on the new album to play,” Haake continues. “It’s definitely got its fair share of ‘instrumental technicality,’ but more importantly I think it ended up having a cool, crazy, erratic-type vibe to it, as well as a playfulness, making it interesting and enhancing the song to beyond its mere technical aspects. This one also has one of the coolest guitar solos on it, played by Fredrik Thordendal of the band
New Milennium Cyanide Slippers!
For some reason i never really listened to the end of this song, but damn, the chord they switch too at 4:39 for that little ten second part is just the vibes i wanted rn, its got an uplifting feeling, like pushing through the sorrow and finding peace, amazing… i love when they bring in that ethereal vibe, like they did at the end of Straws Pulled At Random, now i will have to listen to their whole discography again looking for those moments haha
Oh wow i just realized the lyrics leading to that part is “Gazing to the skies.” How fitting, that harmony feels like im gazing into the sky…
I hope they release a DVD with all this studio footage one day, also the tour that accompanied this album was the best I've ever seen/heard by far.
Don’t let the cymbals stop moving!!!! 🤣 this man is a God
This is the best song I heard in my entire life! I just keep listening to it for hours. Its the perfect expression of what I always felt towards religion and god.
DRUMS ONLY VERSION PLEASE!
Those ghost notes....oooofffff!
I am a professional drummer of Jazz and Latin music and I have been playing professionally for over 40 years. I've toured the world over 2 times and I have read many fine books.... Sorry, I forgot what I meant to say.
Probably the most original piece of metal drumming for at least 20 years. Probably longer.
10/10 absolutely amazing. I grew up listening to loads of metal. I kind of got bored of it after a while, but Meshuggah is the only metal band that have maintained my interest for the last 15 years.
Best band in metal hands down. There is simply no competition in my eyes.
I saw Meshuggah live, on Halloween night, in Montreal. Best live show I've ever seen.
3:44 on.. even Buddy Rich would admire!
I could not contain myself after watching Haake here and ripped the foam stuffing out of our new $1800 sectional sofa like a rabid dog. This music makes me fucking aggressive. Jesus Christ this is next level Meshuggah when they ran out of levels to take their shit. OK I'm done.
haha!! Those slippers man! I almost died choking on my coffee! Would have been the most brutal death though
We now remember Sigurd Jøhnk-Jensen after he tragically died while drinking 100% Arabica coffee only made by the best of child laborers.... May Sigurd Rest In Peace.
Gandalf-DA-Metalhead I can now rest in peace, knowing that my coffee is made by good quality craftmanship....
Lmao
The promotional video material for this album has been fabulous
The whole album recorded live? Honestly freaked me out a bit hearing they did this with 'Violent'. Just finished my first listen. I'm good.
i love watching the hi-hat working in perfect synch with the bass player's Bart Simpson slippers
"Let's see those djent geeks try to cover this one" Haake said to himself right after casting his most powerful witcher concentration spell.
..........aaand the masters show how it's done.Especially after the solo where thomas goes crazy on the snare, insane.Dick's just chillin' in the background, gettin' down.Gods rhythm section right here.
PLAYthrough. Yeah right!
That's correct.
Diethrough might be more accurate.
Back to were they where , love it , flawless drummer incredible ............................... !!
How does they work out to compose such mind blowing stuffs. Can never think of such amazing grooves
3:14 - 3:43 heating up. Beautiful. 3:43 - 4:16 absolutely insane.
This was filmed in that big monolith on the moon from Space Odyssey.
Haake is definitely no hack, this is fantastic. I also really enjoyed his head-bobs, the drummer's equivalent of the bass face
how do you top bleed? show all those trapped in double kick world what serous snare work can sound like!
His drumming has waited his 50's to expand to whole new multiverses!
Antes de cada disco de Meshuggah pienso que no me va a sorprender por que ya lo hicieron todo,,,,pero me equivoco!!,,definitivamente no tienen limites,,, que gran banda!!!!
A diabolic-mechanical etude with a divine harmonic ending & culmination. What a piece, what a drum part, what a band.
Thank you.
did that guy just play Meshuggah wearing slippers ( the guitarist ) ....
It's Dick Lövgren and that's a bass, and yes those are slippers.
He is called the lord of swag
gotta get comfortable to play that groove
Actually it's a custom Zon bass not a Warwick.
Pierre Jacobi thats a bass
I just came off someone's list for most chaotic Meshuggah sections, was surprised the bridge verse (after the chorus, starting at 3:45) wasn't there. Somehow overlooked, it's just nutssss. Lookit him go!
Thank you mr Haake for the awesome, masterful energy management tips you gave me at NAMM 2018!
When you play drums and you start laughing while watching this video because you realize you will never play this sh¨t cause it's fcking impossible and you're not that good :ccc
top 2 favorite drummers. Thomas haake and gene hoglan.
Haake and Carey for me (:
Y'all need Gavin Harrison.
YES Sir!
haake and Blake Richardson for me
Ok there a great drummers and then there is Tomas, who it absolutely flawless it's really incredible he doesn't miss notes it is perfection every single time.
Looking at his right hand and long silver hair, he must be the Dumbledore wizzard of drumming.
Julian Niedzwetzki Drumbledore!!!
I have listened to this album every day since it came out on on the day my son came into this world but nothing could have prepared me for the slippers.Great view of one of the best drummers around.👌
Dancers to a Discordant Slippers.
It’s like his brain thinks before yours at all times 😂 idk if that makes sense but he’s hitting notes after or before I think they’re gonna be hit. His drumming is literally a true testament to human capabilities when it comes to body and mind control, plus even being able to compose this shit from start to finish. What a collective of minds.
this is my new favourite song
Besides Thomas from the Swedish drummers, another at such a technical level and
special skills is Morgan Agren, both are exceptional and very advanced instrumentalists.
Ho-lee shit, watching the slippers actually helps keep me so locked in the groove
come on now...this is beyond ridiculous!??;'#!!*
this is on a level itself!
this is inhuman!
tomas haake you are officially on the drum rushmore.
inhuman...! no jaws left to drop
Это невозможно ! Так отбивать эту наисложнейшую, в ритмическом, плане музыку!! Склоняю голову, я их фанат уже почти 20 лет!
best of the best
PLS MESHUGGAH!!!! YOUR NEXT ''LIVE'' DVD SHOULD BE THE WHOLE VIOLENT STUDIO LIVE! PLS DO IT!
Who need dye his hair? Haake's long hair with natural grey by age seems totalli cool to me,I'm the only one?
Congrats for all the effort and excellent playing on this song by song riff compilation. Nailed it.
So in about a couple years we should expect the 1st person to play a
Drum Cover of this....shit, I'll be trying to figure this out for at
least a couple years....I'm still stuck on some parts of Bleed for cryin
out loud!!!
Yes this confirms what I heard - instead of intense foot work, he's got intense work up top with the hands. Great work and I'm super glad that they've decided to post Thomas doing his own song because many of the covers don't pick up the nuances. It's nice to know what the band actually played before moving in your own direction with your own music.
