This song will stay with me forever! For as long as I can remember, my Godfather would break out the uke and sing this song anytime we had a family gathering. So much fun singing along with him! And its so great to hear bruddah Iz singing it!
So im stationed in Germany and from Oahu.... I have this kid in my Platoon singing this song every time he see's me... It makes me home sick... Can't wait to get back to da rock....
This is my first song i have learn to sing in hawaiian , i was 6 years old when i learn to sing this song :D . This is one of the easy hawaiian song to sing anyone can sing it .
Aloha Ladypride, right you are, I'd even say, what ever was the reason why our Lord decided to take men like Skippy & Bruddah IZ home so soon, their music is an everlasting heritage, not only for hawaiians but for all people of all peoples of the whole world who understand that the spirit of Aloha is the same as the spirit of Shalom: It's love! So I think that is what he meant talking about his feeling. When I heard his widow saying, he was like a great teddybear, I got the tide rising high in my eyes and still have to wipe my eyes when I remember it. Nevertheless I say a great mahalo to our Lord for having created IZ with all his talents and his loving heart and although I did not have the chance to meet him on earth, I'm really awaiting to meet this man after the rapture who lived the most important commandment with all of his loving heart .
This video makes me happy watching Israel and the guys having fun and sad because I found these guys too late to see in person .... mahalo for the post !
What fun re-discovering "IZ" via the Tim russert Rainbow. In this video, they are really having fun, and showing the culture of Hawaii, where relaxation and fun are the play of the day. Tis BEAUTIFUL to discover all of these treasures. If YOU, in any way, contributed to this JOY ... THANK YOU!!! I'm so BLESSED to see all of these videos. Precious, precious, precious!!!!!
I have just discovered the great talent of this man during a recent trip to Hawai'i...loved it instantly! Especially his version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow'! Returned back home toPennsylvania and just had to download the 'Facing Future' album! FANTASTIC! It takes me right back to the islands! Mahalo nui loa, Bruddah Iz!!!
If you like song/album, checkout Makaha Sons of Niihau. Origination of Iz public connection. They took the Hawaiian Music Renaissance baton & RAN W/it!
I came to the music of IZ, because my son has done his honeymoon to Hawaii. From intresse I have also looked for typical music. So I have come to IZ. I love this music, her voice and feeling that I have when I hear his songs. Whenever I need a little cheering up, I listen to his songs. And, you may think that is crazy, but I bought a ukulele and I practice every day, even after his songs. I firmly believe in a life after death. I hope to meet Iz then. Aloha from Germany.
It was a very sad day in Hawaii when we lost our best entertainer in Hawaiian history. Your songs will live on forever Bruddah IZ. Mahalos for all your dedication to your craft.
Man I wish IZ had did more stuff like this, not to say anything bad about the mans discography, but I don't recall many of them having this energy to them, would have liked to see a bit more of that from him.
I know I'm like... two years late, but that's not his brother Skippy. That's his cousin, Mel Amina. Skippy passed away long before Israel split from the Makaha Sons to go solo.
Just to make correction, Hugh. Guy playing guitar in red is cousin Mel Amina. Bass player is Glen "Analu" Aina, close friend of both Israel & Mel. Steel guitar player is Gaylord Holomalia, one of 808 first call studio musicians. Skippy passed away early 1980s, before Makaha Sons of Niihau signed w/local recording studio that had MAJOR national & international clout. Both brothers passed away WAY too soon! But the "original" Makaha Sons of Niihau will always go down in 808 music as one THE most influential artists in Hawaiian music history!
These guys are so talented, oh my goodness !! I can't get enough of listening to they're wonderful music.,,,and love the humor i giggle overtime at the end of this video. Such beautiful people !!
I just wonder what Iz thinks about the Hawaiian Reggae. When I was in Oahu last year, I heard these Reggae beat but with the Hawaiian words. A little unusual because I grew up being familiar with Elvis and a little calypso beat in Blue Hawaii. But Iz is just great because he makes you feel you belong to Hawaii at least for the duration of the song. Wow!
I don't have the literal translation of each word, but he's basically singing about the local street cars that would race down the streets of downtown Honolulu. That's basically it. When he does the. "Vrooom" sounds at the beginning, he's basically mocking the sound the cars would make. Hope this helps.
watever...how do u know?...almost no one speak hawaiian anymore..they're trying to reteach it so it will survive but it will never be the same...died out with the last generation...sad
@4strokegirl I kinda envy your dad. I would have liked to have met Iz. His music has so much heart in it. Sad we all not have this much love for each other.
nós do Brasil tivemos Tim Maia, e Hawai tiveram Iz, ambos gênios, tocam o coração com suas canções. (we from Brazil got Tim Maia, and Hawai had Iz, both genius, play with their hearts).
@TheShnuz the guy in the red shirt is Mel Amina.. he was an original makaha sons member too, and im pretty sure theyre cousins.. i dont remember.. but he was a hell of a guitar player as u can tell
@mauiboynokaoi i know a chant about the birth of the islands and about Papahanaumoku and Wakea. I'm pretty sure it goes something like this: O wakea noho ia papahanaumoku Hanau o Hawai'i he moku Hanau o Mau'i he moku Ho'i hou o wakea noho ia ho'ohokukalani Hanau o Moloka'i he moku Hanau o Lana'i, ka'ula he moku Liliopu punalua o papa ia ho'ohokukalani Ho'i hou o papa noho ia wakea Hanau o Oahu he moku Hanau o Kaua'i he moku Hanau o Ni'ihau he moku He ula a'o Kaho'olawe
@HAWAIIANPEOPLES You're talking about the kumulipo. It's actually a really damn long chant and that is just one small excerpt from it. My kumu once got together with a bunch of other native speakers and recited the chant down here at the local arts and culture center. Took 4 hours for them to complete the chant. Also note that Kaho'olawe is never born. It just says Kaho'olawe is red. With red being the color of royalty, I think it implies Kaho'olawe as being the most sacred of the islands.
