I tried growing veg in hoop houses, but hadn't prepared for THIS!

  • Hi all 👋 Despite storm Kathleen and contradicting windy weather reports, last weekend I decided to fight it and plant all the vegetable seedlings I had ready in every one of my super strong hoop houses.
As I'm fairly new to growing veg (or at least having a kitchen garden), I've had to constantly do hours of research for spacings, companion planting, etc.
And all was going great for a few days on our first ever farm - no sign of pests or break-ins to my raised protected raised beds, until I realised we had problems.
I also film an update on the Boltardy beetroot, Nantes carrots, Lisbon spring onions, main and early crop potatoes.
    Here's what I planted & used:

Add a strip of copper tape around the outside of the raised beds. It'll reduce issues with slugs. I say reduce, rather than remove, as eggs often get transferred in within soil and compost.

Thanks! I'll give that a go for any extra beds I make without netting

Copper doesn't work to repel slugs and snails, it has been tested many times and you can find plenty of videos on youtube. Egg shells don't work as well. You are better off buying some organic blue pellets, those kill them off quite effectively.

Personally I find dealing with slugs and snails the best way is to do a late night circuit of your garden with a torch and pick them off or use beer traps. I find copper and other barriers pretty ineffective unfortunately even though they are popularly recommended.

Loving the update on your babies. Those transplanting trowels are very useful. Have a look into earthing up potatoes. Yours look ready to be covered over. I've had problems in the past with mice and sweetcorn. I heard some people putting socks over the ears of corn to stop mice. Not tried it though.

Fab garden! I commented a few videos back when you were planting carrot seed. They need to be kept moist. I noticed at both 2:50 and again at 23:40 the soil in the carrot bed looked dry. I still suggest that you dampen the rows and place boards upon them for better germination. Or experimant on a few rows.

    • @janmitchell641

Yes, the board idea for carrots is legit. I just did a version of that in my carrot grow bags, so far so good.

I would add another 6-10 corn seeds to that bed Vikki. Corn does much better in clumps than rows as it is self pollinating and needs to rub together. Closer planting improves cob yields. The long bed would be an ideal candidate for no-dig. You've mentioned this before so as a reminder Charles Dowding method is here: ruclips.net/video/0LH6-w57Slw/видео.html

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if you have a hard standing floor EG Concreet, The organic matter will not compost down
it relies on the bacteria from the soil to turn your leftover food and things from the garden into compost. Good luck with the project.

You're making me reconcider now... doing some more research after what you said, it does seem that you get better results being over the soil, think i might build some nice compartments with a shelter
and use that outbuilding with hard standing for something else instead now..😅

I’m trying Diatomaceous Earth this year to cut down on scorpions, but it does work with snails and slugs. I don’t mind killing the scorpions, but I really like the idea left here about copper tape on the edges to keep the others out. Things still land on the leaves, but my garden is so small anything being nibbled is removed as soon as I see it. I’d watch any videos you make. Shorts too. You’re living my tiny farm dream. Undoable in a desert. I just don’t do other social media.

I just built another small raised bed, I wish I had the land you have, 2.4m x 1m and my neighbour supplied my with eight 20l bags of top soil.
My dog Apollo is obsessed with the new top soil and keeps trying to eat it.
Smelling the top soil is smells a little like cow so I am guessing the secret ingredient was cow manure. Apollo has previous with that stuff as on a wall in Wales (on lead) he decided to scoop up a fresh pat, he was munching away as it hung out of his mouth. Thank goodness I had control of Zeus that was stepping around them.

You might regret that configuration of raised beds and hinged hoop houses. Ideally you don’t want to be on your knees and over reaching. Your back won’t thank you for it.
A French Chenille hoop house system would be better for accessing your raised beds from both sides but still allow you to use a variety of different covers.
You could do with a path to walk through the long line of hoop houses to encourage you to walk to the other side to access the other side of the raised beds instead of over reaching.
Transplant your seedlings a lot deeper into the soil.
Sow a lot of sunflowers and sweetcorn on a different patch of land. This will help you grow lots of browns (dried stalks) for your compost material. Whether you direct seed or grow in modules is up to you but you need to grow browns.
Don’t forget to harvest seeds from your sunflowers and sweetcorn (as long as they are open pollinated varieties) so you never need to buy seeds again. Same goes for your other veg.

Annoying about the beetles but it should be short-lived. Hopefully, next year they will be gone. Have you got started on tomatoes? I cannot recommend cherry tomatoes enough. Very productive and easy. Make an 8 foot support and pluck out the suckers and you they will grow like grapes on a vine.

Nettles are a great source of fertiliser also comfrey if you have any (and it's free). Find an area that you don't need that has nettles and just leave it alone. You can harvest from it and the insects love it.
It seemingly makes an edible soup (never tried it) the cooking kills the sting. 🤔👍 P.s. Our peas never reach the kitchen, they're eaten straight off the vine, yumm.

On the topic of spacing. I've definitely landed firmly in the camp of; ignore row spacing measures.
The space between each seed/transplant is important but the row spacing (which is always far wider than the plant spacing) is largely a measure of mechanical farming. The spacing is intended to allow you to run certain equipment between the rows without disturbing the plants.
In a home garden (particularly raised beds) where you aren't running tractors over your beds.... row spacing is meaningless, use the plant spacing for both.
Some may argue against this and they might be right but I've never run across an issue packing those beds a little fuller.

With a covered raised bed that stops birds getting to the soil, I feel safe in using slug pellets. A more expensive but effective method is to buy the predatory nematodes that target slugs. The other tip is to raise plants to a larger size before planting them out. Also I find some plants seem less likely to be targeted by slugs. For example red leaves lettuce seem to be ignored by slugs for some reason. Or at least Hertfordshire slugs seem to avoid them!
Cut worms are a b**ger. hope your organic treatment works!
I do not bother thinning out beetroot’s, of course it’s down to personal choice, but I find they all grow to a reasonable size. You can twist out golf ball size ones leaving others go get larger if that’s your thing. Mind you I am all for avoiding jobs!

You guys really are living the Good Life 😂 Love it! When I was a kid (a good 30 years ago) my neighbour / not real uncle used to grow veg and peas straight out of the pod were the best! It's one thing that make me really want to start growing veg now. If you do want to sell Hanns for being cheeky I want to be first in line 😂 He is such a sweetheart! Obviously well trained (most of the time!) Failing that seeing how he loves a raised bed could I grow my own? Haha

Get some Bocking 14 Comfrey root cuttings. Start growing comfrey somewhere and propagate by taking root cuttings. Comfrey will give you lots of biomass for your compost. Other benefits of growing comfrey too such as using it as a fertiliser, attracts bees and more.

For the composting station you will need to try to kill off the ivy as much as possible... ivy meets compost... huge amounts of ivy everywhere.

Personally I'd use the grow bags for potatoes and root crops or a single courgette plant a number of closely planted lettuce or chard but if you are going to use them for broadbeans put at least 6 or 10 but remember they will need sturdy suports

It's always worth remembering about letting nature do it's thing. If you cover your crops, there is a chance that slugs, aphids etc will still get into your beds but as the beds are covered the birds that eat the slugs etc can't get at the pests to eat them. Nature is a wonderful thing.
Love your videos whatever that are about, gardening, woodwork, lofts etc.
