Ray Charles Robinson (September 23, 1930 - June 10, 2004), known professionally as Ray Charles, was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and composer. He was sometimes referred to as "The Genius", and was also nicknamed "The High Priest of Soul".
He pioneered the genre of soul music during the 1950s by combining rhythm and blues, gospel, and blues styles into the music he recorded for Atlantic Records. He also contributed to the racial integration of country and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, most notably with his two Modern Sounds albums. While he was with ABC, Charles became one of the first African-American musicians to be granted artistic control by a mainstream record company.
Charles was blind from the age of seven. Charles cited Nat King Cole as a primary influence, but his music was also influenced by jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, and country artists of the day, including Art Tatum, Louis Jordan, Charles Brown, and Louis Armstrong. Charles' playing reflected influences from country blues, barrelhouse, and stride piano styles. He had strong ties to Quincy Jones, who often cared for him and showed him the ropes of the "music club industry."

The drummer deserves some serious credit! Wow!
What was him
You are absolutely right. The drummer created so many amazing textures! It’s because of him that a good song became great.
Drummer is Milt Turner
I agree. Just as great as Ray himself.
Everybody involved deserves serious credit, partner.....
It's physically impossible to hear this without tapping your toes.
Or rocking your head in the beat.
Correct 👌👌👌
Damn was laying in bed, read this comment, and realized my toes were tapping the air
I was doing that while i scrolled down and seen your comment
C'est exactement Ça !!!
Charles created this song on stage to fill lime remaining in his contract. No rehersal...all off the cuff. Brilliant !!!
Really? Astounding!
The young people back then were more cultured! Also, most of their music was GOOD. Hence the appreciation.
@@FederazioneCiclisticaItaliana right back at you.
The fact that his band could pull it off really says something about how tight they were.
@the teetto and @ Mustapha Aazim, why don't you go listen to Cheb Mami or Rachid Tahar? Me i don't listen music from people i do not like you see what i mean, Ray Charles is not talking to your people, so stop annoying cursing. You don't even know about english, both of you, you need to learn english first.
This is one of those songs that blew me away on first listen. Usually it takes me several listens to "get" a song, but not this one. A timeless classic.
yeah, just the same
Man that was clean.
Same, and it always blows me away
Yup.
pppppppppp00pp0ppppppp
63 years later and still a classic.

That's for sure.
We all have our sorrows ............ ♥🤞
This is one of the greatest R&B/Rock&Roll tunes ever made.
I agree!
This is arguably the first “freestyle” to reach mass success.
Isn't itttttt🎉
This song never ages. This is a master piece.
Vivian Chetty Ray Charles is a Masterpiece...He is a ROCK, a gift from God!
I believe it gets better with age.
Vivian Chetty - Amen to that.
Definitely.
Modern day composer, same as Mozart, Beethoven in their day.
Till the horns enter at almost 4 minutes? THAT is a 3-piece band centered around a little Wurlitzer electric piano with about 63 keys that sold for a couple/few hundred bucks back in the day! That is also what's called SOUL! Wurlitzer shoulda paid Brother Ray for the only advertisement they'd EVER need for a "Wurly" for more than half a century! ...WOW!
Thank you Blues Brothers for getting me into Ray Charles. He is truly the definition of a legend.
He manages to not only notice someone trying to steal, but shoot at them, and nearly miss them.
Deadley Spawn: I would kindly add: thanks Mom for playing bigg Ray Ray on the phonograph, still listening at 59..
I love that album art. It's like Ray is so chill even his piano smokes a fat one. Lol
LOL--True!
Had me rolling
HAHAHAHA!!!
When music was music. An old masterpiece. And this was done from someone who was BLIND. Ray know 100% where the notes are in the piano. Faith always prevails. He is one of those few guys who had MAD talent.
Good music still exists just have to find it..
Milt Turner absolutely killed it on this one. A great Drummer that needs to be known by all. One of my favorite Ray Jams!
Listen to "Luck Be A Lady" by vibraphonist (and pianist) Eddie Costa, with Bill Evans, p. Wendell Marshall, bass, and PAUL MOTIAN, drums!!! He does on this song what MiltTurner did on What'd I Say!

Agree! A few great drummers on Blues recordings during fifties and sixties who never received the recognition they deserved
This was 1959 (NINETEEN FIFTY FRIGGING NINE). Shit grooves sooo hard maaan.
@@matthewnewton8812 There is so much great music even from before 1959!
Ray Charles was gift. Man you can turn on Ray and dance and clean your house. Bootie shaken music!
This is amazing. It's so sad there's not one station on the air dedicated to preserving such genius!
Radio is dying anyway. Its here on youtube, and apple music and spotify, forever.
Thank God for YT
Also KPLU Seattle
I can make you r radio station rattle the rafters. It's me again sjcool 😎 baby spinning them up
this song is like the nucleus of soul music
This song truly gave birth to soul music as we would later know it. And dozens of labels and artists have spent years trying to match it.
Old music soul music
We still have soul music, only now its sell your soul music.
I like to add that it is an intricate part of DNA and brings forth more wonder full character traits😅
The original is way better than any cover out there.
You are right. Bobby Darin's version is a distant second best. The rest ( Covers) t do not come anywhere close to the original
When music was music....
R.I.P. Mr Charles.
So you are saying that music nowardays is shit?
@@aprettybadartist7917yes
RogAlexDrag just look at the billboard charts most of the song on there are complete trash, these no talent just auto tune and the same tired hip hop beat🥱🤦🏾♀️
Agree 😔👌💯
@@jenafil2352 the fact that you call the modern music shit shows how much of a lazy piece of shit you are. If you look for good music, you'll find it. There is good music out there. Sure, mainstream is shot, but not all modern music is
One of the greatest intros ever… an all time classic that will be forever ‘in the groove’!
Why can't pop/rock music nowadays sound anywhere near this level?
Quite simply one of the greatest songs sung by one of the greatest singer/songwriters ever.
Jamie fox did a good job being Ray Charles
Continue To Rest In Paradise Ray Charles
61 years later and this still rocks!!!
Some people are so beyond their years, that for generations after them, their work never ages.
He was ahead of his time.
I remember my band teacher had us play a small part for this, cause he was hoping he’d “aspire us to compete in the talent show” and we weren’t to bad. And I was on cow bells
tttthis song was a HUGE influence on whether to even get into music...who am I kidding,I was born with this in my soul...love Ray
I still can't believe he made this song up on the spot
It should be recognised as the best freestyle of music to the existence of humans 😂😂🎉
Holy fuck, a king
I am. Enyoing Ray Charles and. dancing by myself. Best memories.
Oh my I'm dancing to

The definitive Ray Charles song. I remember back in 1972 when I was 15 working at a skating rink and the owner, (the infamous Carl Clark, Idabel, Oklahoma, former B17 pilot) was always playing Ray Charles. Such a good skate two-stepping song. Ray, you was always rocking the rink!
Nothing left to say…..GENIUS!

Paul McCarney said when they heard Ringo playing this drum part, they knew he was real good. Not many drummers could do it.
I remember when I heard the song for the first time, almost twenty years ago when the movie "Ray" with Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles came out. And since then I've loved Ray's music and the film starts right with that song. Simply legendary.
My mom loved Ray charles too may she rip ❤ and Stevie Wonder both artists were visionaries ...
You could try for a million years and you won't find a better talent than Mr. Charles
RESPECT
definitely. will not come to earth again like that guy
Mr. Robinson to be correct
The man had music created IN him. It was his gift... music his muse. We didn't deserve a musician of his caliber...
Beatles " i feel fine" , now i know where the inspiration came from
This song always put me in a party mood. What a genius. We miss you Ray.
What a delight even after more than 60 years. I learned to dance on this. Wonderful memories.
I couldn’t find a comment with the lyrics so I looked it up on ✨google✨ 😂

The 50s wouldnt be the 50s without the music realesed in the end of the decade: Johnny B Goode; Whatd i say; Put Your Head on My Shoulder ans many more. I know some people consider this song as 60s but for me this was the last revolutionary sound of the decade. I fcking love the 50s!!!! Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Fat Dominos, Buddy Hollie, Everly Brothers, Hank Williams, Etc. Sometimes id like to be american. You have a lot of great music.

The incomparable RAY CHARLES ROBINSON.
great circular keyboard line and orgiastic call-response vocals.
The intro riffing is a jazz groove called the bossanova. It developed from the Latin influence on jazz circa late 50’s to early 60’s. “Blame it on the Bossa Nova”!
Thanks for the info, Marc
Ray Charles, was the boss.. My only regret, I never got to see him in person...

Man, I'm a white 43 year old guy and the first time I hear this song I was about 7 on the jukebox at a restaurant and I kept playing it over and over!! When I got older I started getting what this jam is all about, and there may not be a sexier song ever made lol! It's addictive! I mean, you feel like a million bucks when you hear it. I can imagine ol Ray and his band playing this in nightclubs for hours and the crowd begging him to keep it going!

Since the year I was born.

Wow, I came here because, I wanted to hear where the inspiration for the Beatles "I feel fine" drum part that Ringo played came from. This is amazing. This is pure soul and feel.

Ray Charles best that ever did it . he was the first to make and mix different music . he was way way ahead of his time . and i dont think there will ever be anyone to ever come close to what he did .
