Using "K" as a starting point is the best tip I've ever heard on how to pronounce the French "R." Thanks!
Aw so happy to help! glad it was helpful ! :)
Thank you for this! I nearly gave up on learning because of that r 😅 as a native English speaker r in romantic languages like French and Spanish are difficult for me. Some days I get it. Most days I don't.
It will probably come naturally if you keep practising and also listening to French speakers.. I'm British and I was studying French Spanish and Italian at the same time 😊
oh what we should have mentionned also in the video is that if you don't get it perfectly it's not important. As long as you can make yourself understood you know :)
I will get it someday, nothing disturbs me like "rien".
ah that's a tricky word too☺
I feel like this video was made for me! Thanks for the great tips. The K thing does work!
ah cool !! ☺☺
Oh my gosh I'm so grateful that you did this video! You could do a weekly video on the R pronunciation and it wouldn't be too many for me. MERCI!
haha you're welcome ^^
Thanks for the video! I never knew I could learn so much about the french R in 5 minutes!
Thank you for breaking it down in such a detailed way! I feel that I finally understand how it sounds, and I can practice it correctly from now on. Merci!
Glad it was helpful!☺☺
Rarement was hard for me at the beginning, and I used that one to get myself acquainted with the drench R. Thank you!!!
ah yeah that's one is trickyyy too haha
Thank you guys, you're amazing 👍🏻
Thank you. VERY helpful! Much appreciated
Glad it was helpful! :):)
I guess I’m lucky lol. I started learning French when I was 7 (I’m 13 now) and for some reason I immediately got the “French r”. As someone who’s now interested in languages and linguistics, it still baffles me lol. Good luck to everyone trying to learn it, it’s probably not as difficult as you think :)
ah great to here that :))
My 2 French word nemesis are rue and regarder 🤷♂️
ah yeah tricky :/
J’adore prononcer le R en français!
ah cool :)
Wow, I'm not even actively studying French and I can't stop watching your videos! You two are so great! If I'm honest with myself, I never "took" to studying French the way I took to other languages because French presented challenges that I didn't enjoy overcoming. Your videos are making me reconsider... Starting with a "k" to pronounce "r" is a great tip I've never heard before. Thank you for your videos 😊
Thank you! 😃 So glad to hear that! :)
I thought at first: ok, a short video, I can watch it before going work, but now I have been sitting here for more than half an hour and still praticing the words and of course, je suis à la bourre :-D Thank you for this interesting video. Je l'adore.
hahaha glad you found it useful :):)
To help with the harsher/throaty "R", I would gargle water to get that part of my throat warmed up, then would practice gargling without water. It almost sounds like your are purring like a cat (from your throat). In english we don't use that part of our throat when speaking, so it takes a bit of practice. The hardest "R" word for me is pronouncing the town of Rouen...
ah yeah great idea, warming that part of the body in a way can by usefull ^^
I think for me another example of a word that has a more subtle 'r' towards the end - which troubled me when I was first learning French and how to say words like très - was "livre". At the time, I was saying it more like "lee-vruh", and then had to consciously tone it back to more of a "soupçon" of an 'r'.
ah yeah great example! ☺
My understanding is that today's rough R became the standard pronunciation in the late 18th century; before that Rs were rolled even more than Edith Piaf! I also understand the silent consonants also became standard about this time, which I've heard was the custom in the Parisian salons.
I'm a french beginner and whenever i tried to sing along to edith piaf's songs i was always struggling with the exaggerated Rs lol good to know that more softer Rs are the correct way most of the time since i can get that sound a lot easier😅
hahaha yeah it's so hard. You should look for her interviews and you'll see that she doesn't speak like that at all, she has a soft R just like us ^^
@@Street_French ohh thank you ☺️
'Great lesson guys! :)
Thanks! 😃
Chuis un francophile. As far as im aware, there are a few types of français R sounds. The first is voiced uvular fricative, par exemple, in words like rouge, arrêt, train. However, it becomes voiceless uvular fricative in words like partir, frère. But the R used in french opera, sounds like spanish and italian R. J'aime beaucoup pronouncing R in français.
I'd like to request/suggest a video. I would love a pronunciation video based on French/French-named liquors and liqueurs. Some of the types I've seen include Chambord, Cointreau, Bénédictine, crème de cassis, crème de violette, pastis, Grand Marnier, St. Germain, Armagnac, Rinquinquin, Lillet, cognac.
Love your videos! Thank you!
ah great idea !
Have you watch the ones about wines and champagne by chance? It might interest you :)

@@Street_French I have and I loved it!!!
This uploaded at JUST the right time 💥😅
ah cool ! :)
Interesting you mentioned Edith Piaf, I always wondered why she rolled her R’s like in Spanish. So if someone were to roll the R’s in French would a native speaker be able to understand what that person is saying? Merçi!
ah yeah so if you check out her interviews she doesn't roll the Rs at all! it's her singing style I guess ^^
and it surely depends on the person, but yes I would say that we would be able to understand usually.
Can you do a video about " la bise" culture, C'est compliqué.
Check out Jeff Buckley's Edith Piaf impression on Live à l'Olympia. Hysterical.
ah ok haha^^
Est-ce que vous pouvez faire une vidéo sur l'u et ou. Par exemple dessous et dessus... J'arrive pas

@@Street_French Merci. Je réfléchirai !
Train yourself with " AEROREFRIGERANT " 😂😂😂 PS : même un francophone n'arrive pas à prononcer ce mot correctement 🤭
hahaha
What about "prendre"? I was doing an ap and the word was supposed to be prend, I think, but I put "b.r.a.u.n.d" I need a little reassurance.
ah yeah the second R is barely pronounced ^^
Bonjour! Je veux t’opinon!
J’ai été en jouant vidéo jeu dans le français pour fair mieux me français. Bon idea?
Bonjour, je ne suis pas sûre d'avoir compris. Vous voulez améliorer votre français en jouant aux jeux vidéos? (video games?)
I struggle to say the RER train. My r has changed so much in the past year.
oh wow yeah RER is hard haha
that's good, you feel like you've made progress this year?
@@Street_French yes I think so, I can have conversation and be understood but I struggle with passé composé et future proche.
Charlie, love your haircut! Very handsome.
Maia is one lucky fille.
ah yeah totally agree ☺☺

Whenever someone says their favorite French singer is Edith Piaf, I'm reminded of people who never read and say their favorite novel is "1984."
Rumeur, in my case, is my great friend for practicing
It is similar to the German R
🎶 Moi j'étais rrrrravie de rrrrregarder cette video, rrrréellement pour vrrrrrai 🎶
