Just an uneducated guess, but I don't think that one is actually pumping oil. Lots of coal bed methane around Farmington. The location only has the one tank and a phase separator, no water knock out. I believe this jack is there to pull water off the coal bed to allow the gas out, not actually producing oil. I could be wrong though...

The shinny rod is called a Polish rod. The Polish rod is connected to sucker rods, that are connected to the pump barrel. Every stroke should bring up some fluid. The single cylinder engine is a Ajax combustion engine. The red box at the wellhead is called a stuffing box that has packing inside of it to seal off the Polish rod and keep the production inside the flowline that is connected to the production tank that was in the background. The long cable pulling on the Polish rod is called a bridle. The smaller cable and arm that sits on top of the bridle is known as a rod rotator. The rod rotator slowly turns the Polish rod, sucker rods and pump barrel so they don't wear the rods and pump on one side and helps them all have a longer run life. The red gauge at the wellhead is a Hi/Low pressure gauge. It can be set to ground out the ignition on the Ajax engine if the flowline pressure was to get to high or to low. High line pressure could be caused by a closed or a restricted valve in the flowline system and also high pressure when it gets too cold and the produced fluid thickens up and will not move.

Actually its pushing the oil out as the down hole pump is a submersible pump. The oil comes up the tubing string on the down stroke.

Surprised they don't fence them off now days with kids get their arm lopped off, or worse than they sue the owner claiming should have been fenced off. See the water oil separator tank behind it. Sometimes they run the engine off gas coming off the well itself or many were converted to electric motor as power lines were pulled into the area.

At first I thought by sound the motor was running on well gas. Then you showed the propane storage tank.

That's more or less to get it going.. it wouldn't be cost effective to have them run off propane.. usually they run them on propane until they're up to temp, then switch to well gas... again, generally
