I’m so insanely grateful for you all in supporting this crazy journey, and especially to my good friends who helped make the computer scene, the amazing music, and the next level soundscapes. I have so many improvements planned but really wanted to show off progress in a fun trailer for you. So much more to come!! Please do leave some feedback here or the discord - I read everything! 💙
@paulprules I have had Gloomwood on my wishlist for a long time, but nowadays I try to avoid early access games as i've been burned a bit too many times already. Looks great though!
I'm fine with them just attempting it at all. Literally every new attempt at a thief successor or literally in the Thief franchise itself doesn't even attempt to make floor surfaces and sound propagation a core mechanic. Imo it's not thief if it doesn't have that as the fundamental mechanic for the entire game.
Idk who on their team might see this but Logic has a good Spatial Audio tool built into it now that has been pretty promising, idk if that can be of any use in relation to a videogame but it’s pretty neat
Right? I've never forget how much impact had first Thief on me. It wasn't just a game but full experience which I never was prepared for. I've been patiently waiting for next Thief-like game for years, and here it is.
This looks sick, but also check out Gloomwood if you haven't already. A Dillon Rogers and David Szymanski (Dusk, Iron Lung) joint that very much borrows heavily from those early thief games. Still early access, but the vibes are there
@Fickji the best part was using water arrows to trip the guards. OG thief never did that. Nice to see different uses for the same exact tool. This is what an immersive sim is all about
everyone talking about the visual presentation but the thing I noticed the most is the sound design, seems like you guys have done a a great job with it too
@kylegilbert5234 I just hope it doesn't have 2-3 interactive things like that and then that's it. I hope it has at least 10+ really cool interactions like that. At least. I know it takes so much time and effort to develop more and more cool stuff like that, but it really makes a game shine when you have so many choices and interesting interactions.
I have to say, when I first saw your video 4 months ago I was impressed but skeptical. It seemed like an outrageously ambitious project. I've seen so many independent developers coming out the gate gangbusters, but later becoming overwhelmed when faced with the realities of game development. Sadly I've become a bit of a skeptic, especially when it comes to immersive sims which are notoriously difficult to develop even when you DO have resources and a large team. But holy dude. The amount of progress you've made in 4 months is astonishing. This not only looks feature rich and fun, but also really original within the "retro style" niche. It takes some games and developers years to find an aesthetic voice, but you are really not messing around here are you? The fact that you're confident enough to be putting out a demo as soon as you are really makes me excited about this. Thanks for carrying Looking Glass's torch (seeing as the people who actually own Thief aren't interested in doing it).
Your comment exactly captures what i just felt. I saw this thinking "oh yah that dope looking thief game that guy was making, wonder how much progress hes made" ----jaw on floor.....
I was already blown away by the incredible rendering technique used to capture the oldschool pixel art look, but seeing it in action with dynamic movement, NPCs, and combat, has broken my brain. I cannot wait to play the demo!
I hope this game has the same level of in-depth dry humour, dark fantasy as Thief, and no millennial quirkyness / tongue in cheek humour, I only mention it because everything else looks good
it uses a different kind to what we used to. He made a video about his techniquea whiel back, its not rendered in 3d and laid over by a pixel filter it was something else. Dont quite remember but it was something new and it was exciting.
The first video merely showcased the unique graphics, but this right here shows real skills in video game making (animations, interactions, etc), all while looking and sounding like an established studio made it.
one of the reasons Thief 1 and 2 are so good is the mood and ambient soundtrack. Plus the NPCs having conversations. It really made you feel like you were in places you weren't supposed to be. Since it was very difficult to win in actual combat, the stakes for remaining hidden were so much higher. NPCs really would react to sounds that you made and if you were faintly visible they would be like "is someone there?" and go investigate. NPC's would communicate to others if they saw you and then you would have several guards looking around for you. Each level was like a little sandbox kind of like how Hitman is. The moody sountrack.. did I mention that? Also the voice acting and mission briefings where your character "Garrett" would tell a little story about the new job he got. Also no annoying Ubisoft style UI arrows showing you if someone is about to spot you, you had to watch and listen.
I remember seeing the first screenshot of this game, with the view of the castle. I thought "Man that looks beautiful but idk if they'll be able to make the whole game look that good." Boy do I stand corrected. This game looks INCREDIBLE and what's even more impressive is how fun it looks. I truly cannot wait
I continue to be astonished by this project. If you're able to deliver what this looks like here, it will be a seminal accomplishment that everyone will be talking about for a long time. Best of luck and I can't wait to see more! Take all the time you need on it!
Oh my god this looks stunning. The pixel art, the animations, the atmosphere, the soundtrack... For an old school gamer, this is liquid gold. My wish for it is that it's more than just an immersive sim, and blends RPG elements into it, but it's your game and it should reflect your vision. Good luck man 🙏🏻
I'm extremely excited for an actual freeform thievery game. That's the best part for me, I love the gameplay of similar immersive sims like Thief and Dishonored, but I've always wanted an open world version where you're not restricted to certain missions and story areas. Planning your own heists during the day, preparing and resting at your hideout, before the dynamic day-night cycle grows closer and closer to sunset, when you shift gears and start your heist. So much progress has been made since we've been shown little snippets of the game earlier this year and late last year. I am extremely hopeful that this will be a phenomenal game that finally scratches the open-world stealth immersive-sim itch.
Wowwww.... now, can we get Stephen Russell to voice the protagonist? 😅 Kidding, this looks AMAZING! Can't wait for the demo!!! Also, wow, animation and animation states are so 🤤
In 1998, when Thief - The Dark Project was released, I was so absorbed by the game at the age of 12 that I learned to sneak around in real life. I asked my mother to buy me a black hoodie and black pants, then practiced moving silently for months. I regularly hid from my friends and parents so I could surprise them from behind. I'm really happy that you're bringing back the atmosphere and essence of this old gem. I wish you lots of strength and good health to finish the game!
Someone thought it was an “ice arrow” that made the person slip, but for elegant parsimony it’s much better if the same water arrow that puts out a torch also creates a slippery puddle. Wet smooth floors are slippery.
People have; they just never got implemented in full games/popular games. Or it was gamers that mentioned it, but no one at studios paid attention. Skyrim devs originally had arrows like that and other cool things in a 1-week dev jam they did where they were allowed to make whatever they wanted. The video is on RUclips. Problem is the decisions made by creative directors and such, they get final say on what to add to games mostly.
I would pay a lot for an open world RPG sandbox mixing some elder scrolls+Kingdom come deliverance+mount and blade+kenshi mechanics with these graphics!
Cultic showed that one person, with a clear artistic vision and the technical chops to realze it, can release a real banger. This looks the same, I'm totally keeping an eye on this one!
@DonnyKanone You can make someone slip by creating an icy surface. Zoomers need to always relate anything that's vaguely related with lots of hyperbole.
Tho I like this style, I feel it could show a bit more details. 0:56 A good example is this scene. This style makes it hard to see contrast. The gold coins looks like they are one big blob and the candlesticks look like they are made of the same material as the table. Maybe a bit more fine dithering so that it feels like there more colors?
Gotta admit, the gameplay kinda overshadows all the nice tech eye candies, and I'm not convinced by the extremely quantized animation time - but it's just a gameplay reveal, this goes straight in my wishlist ;) Beware of scope creep!
My first impression was Kings Quest meets Thief, and I absolutely love what you're doing here, and will (attempt to) wait ever so patiently for the full release!! An automatic wishlist for sure! I shared it with my brother and he also wishlisted it agreeing with me that the graphics, sound design, and music are on point!
As an Elder Gamer from the ancient time of the 90s, this is refreshing to see modern engines and game mechanics but with that old school sprite and pixel graphics. Theres just something so satisfying and nostalgic but also something very special about it. Somehow makes the game feel very personal and very hand crafted and not some kind of money grab graphic intensive bullcrap. I love it. It’s like an open world rendition of Thief.
Had no idea this existed and I'm blown away by this trailer. Looks like an amazing love letter to the old Thief games and the art style is really distinctive and nice. Great sound work too, very important for a game like this.
It’s like one of those cool-looking AI generated ads for mobile games that don’t match the aesthetic of the actual game at all, but it’s hopefully real this time. 🤞
I LOVE how this is based on Thief. The OG games. Can not wait. From blackjacking, to water and fire arrows to sneaking around in the dark and thru secret passageways. I just hope sound and light is key to sneaking around. Looks like there is a greater degree of freedom.
I have dreamt of a game like this for over two decades. This is the first time since I was young teen that I feel anticipation for an upcoming game to this degree.
The videogame scene desperately needs fresh rpg experiences with old school art style like this. This is where our imagination works in tandem with the game to fullfill the magic experience we always crave for but no high fidelity game can reach
@GameSaysWhat rpg is a wide term. You could say it's a roleplaying game on being a thief. Immersive sims as this type of game is called can be a subset of rpg. Its a really large subject to talk about honestly.
Idk, most games back then were specifically designed around how CRTs light up certain pixels and effects. Don't know if just throwing a random pixel game on there will be as good as intentionally designing the art to work seamlessly with CRT from the start.
@GameSaysWhat There are plenty of games that weren't designed for CRTs that still look great on them. Take Minecraft for example. I'm not saying you're wrong. I just imagine that the game graphics would feel more "soft" and less pixelated on a CRT. You're right that it would probably be more of a personal preference that something that is objective a better experience. Parenthetically, I'm also writing this from a CRT monitor.
Welcome to the world of immersive sims. Look up The Dark Mod if you want a 100% free, extremely high quality game made by a passionate community. This game is a tribute to the original Thief series of games which The Dark Mod is based off of.
0:29 how the hell do you get an animation like this with a sprite? Are they actually 3D models but paved over with post-processing to look like sprites? Or did you honestly make a shot of every sprite animation frame from every angle so you can get a top down diagonal look at one? That's an impressive angle.
I suspect its a 3D model, optimized for this set of global shaders and with stilted animations meant to mimic the good ol' sprites of old. Studying it a bit more closely, I think the effect is achieved with a bit of intentional "lag" to the motions, which visually emphasizes the lack of frames. (a hallmark of the billboarding sprites of 90s RPGs and dungeon crawlers)
This art style is AMAZING, but I'm going to be a slightly dissenting opinion here and say that I want more of it. I think your textures are too high-rez. Like, you're weaving this suspension of disbelief with the pixellated castle silhouette, but the barmaid at 0:19 took me STRAIGHT out of it because she looks, honestly, like there's no pixelation filter on her at all. If we're really going for pixelated game-come-to-life stuff, then give me faces that are only like 25 pixels across; Metal Gear Solid made it work with about 20. Give me more limited walk cycles. Give me more saturated colors with less of a uniform color palette. If you want photorealism, that's within your grasp; honestly, the game is basically there already. (To repeat, these graphics are astounding; and, as a gamer, I don't give a [quack] about graphics, so I'm not just saying that.) But if you want retro nostalgia, I think you want to lean in harder. =)
I swear stylized stuff like this has 10x more soul and is more beautiful to look at than ray traced hyper realistic 20 fps slop that's everywhere nowadays
Bless the algorithm that brought me here!
Wishlisted after your first trailer, clearly was the right call!
Holy smokes bro, you’ve been working hard since the last demo.
ok how about you show us something other that bullshots
mby some actual gameplay :)))
Crimson Desert Gameboy edition.
Seriously looks great though love what this is and to become, keep up the good work and stay Blessed
This looks insanely insane
this is the video game
insane
@timone2r Somebody prompted an AI to make a video that resembled "Thief".
@testtube173hopefully not 😅
@timone2rit’s insane how insanely insane this insane game looks.
artstyle over realism lets gooooo!
It's actually art style with proper realism mechanisms
A old-school stealth game?! In this economy!? Am i dreaming!?
All i can say is: hell yeah!
Try gloomwood it's an old school Thief like emersive sim, still in early access unfortunately but the developers have been updating it constantly
@paulprules Wait, STILL in EA? It's been YEARS. What are they doing, counting EA coins on their desk?
@Bunkerknacker_Retro-Nostalgie unfortunately lots of talented Devs can't survive themselves from money getting in their head.
Ever heard of the Dark Mod?
@paulprules I have had Gloomwood on my wishlist for a long time, but nowadays I try to avoid early access games as i've been burned a bit too many times already. Looks great though!
Let's hope the spatial audio is as good as in Thief.
Check out my other video on the 3d audio being worked on! ☺️
@StarhelmStudios Ah I KNEW it was THIS game what I saw a spatial audio demo for!
A true successor to the Thief series? With a lovely art style? Very exciting.
When we used the water arrow to shoot the light out! I was so in!
That was my first thought as well.
Right? I've never forget how much impact had first Thief on me. It wasn't just a game but full experience which I never was prepared for.
I've been patiently waiting for next Thief-like game for years, and here it is.

A Dillon Rogers and David Szymanski (Dusk, Iron Lung) joint that very much borrows heavily from those early thief games.
Still early access, but the vibes are there
Seems to be. Looks promising
0:40 holy thief
STOP RIGHT THERE YOU TAFFER 🗣️🗣️
Yes... the Thief: The Dark Project fan within me screamed when the water arrow was used.
This is a day one for me.
When he pulls out the black jack: Thief?
When he pulls out the water arrows: THIEF!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Fickji And don't forget the mantling! Mantling's everywhere now, but Back In My Day...
yeeeesss very similar
@Fickji the best part was using water arrows to trip the guards. OG thief never did that. Nice to see different uses for the same exact tool. This is what an immersive sim is all about
Have you played The Dark Mod? Standalone game based on Thief
Pause at any moment and it could be literally any fantasy game from the early 90s on DOS or Amiga. This looks amazing.
everyone talking about the visual presentation but the thing I noticed the most is the sound design, seems like you guys have done a a great job with it too
The slip on the floor was what really caught my attention.
I was thinking the same exact thing, i havent heard that great sound quality in a while! Environmental gameplay too!
Currently watching it with a mono speaker. :(
@kylegilbert5234 I just hope it doesn't have 2-3 interactive things like that and then that's it. I hope it has at least 10+ really cool interactions like that. At least. I know it takes so much time and effort to develop more and more cool stuff like that, but it really makes a game shine when you have so many choices and interesting interactions.
Check out their video before this one on sound design. It is insanely cool. The graphics too but yeah these guys are doing something special here.
my reaction to this trailer 1:08
This is what game evolution was suppose to be like.
I have to say, when I first saw your video 4 months ago I was impressed but skeptical. It seemed like an outrageously ambitious project. I've seen so many independent developers coming out the gate gangbusters, but later becoming overwhelmed when faced with the realities of game development. Oh shit it's him.
Mr. majuular. I appreciate you recognizing an indie dev’s hard work, but we’re not letting you out of your cage until you finish Ultima IX.
Here for comments.
Did you use LLM to make your comment for you, mostly?
I was already blown away by the incredible rendering technique used to capture the oldschool pixel art look, but seeing it in action with dynamic movement, NPCs, and combat, has broken my brain. I cannot wait to play the demo!
Be proud of yourself man, this looks amazing.
I hope this game has the same level of in-depth dry humour, dark fantasy as Thief, and no millennial quirkyness / tongue in cheek humour, I only mention it because everything else looks good
Love the audio quality. Very nostalgic and it adds a lot of charm.
This looks amazing
It should be forbidden to generate such an amount of HYPE with one trailer.
Looks insanely good!
Oh my god oh my god
I am just as excited for the dungeon synth music in this game as I am for the visual art direction!
+1
this is what 1600's people think video games will be like in the year of our lord 3025.
It's crazy how much the game is NOT FLICKERING despite all of it's pixelation
it uses a different kind to what we used to. He made a video about his techniquea whiel back, its not rendered in 3d and laid over by a pixel filter it was something else. Dont quite remember but it was something new and it was exciting.
He specifically designed a shader to prevent pixel shimmering
*_THIEF THE DARK PROJECT!!!_*
*_LOOKS LIKE AMAZING!!!_*
I love the transition from classic era 90s DOS to full 3D with pixelation, looks amazing. I've wanted a new Thief like game in a long time.
Thief is that you ? I love what i'm seeing !!
The first video merely showcased the unique graphics, but this right here shows real skills in video game making (animations, interactions, etc), all while looking and sounding like an established studio made it.
Looks awesome!! Gonna scratch that Thief itch we've been having for decades!
This is one of the best projects I've ever seen, and hearing the old retro voices made it so much better

It's like Daggerfall and Thief had a child. I love it.
*PROTECT THAT GAME at all costs !!*
That’s a gorgeous baby.
Oh god, this game even gets the janky style of animations down perfectly. This is going to be a very special game!
Basketball court squeak as he slips on the water. Welcome back Thief.
YYYYYYYYYYYYYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO crazy graphics
This might be the most insane art style i've seen since minecraft. And it's a thief type beat? I'm damn near sold
I remember seeing the first screenshot of this game, with the view of the castle. I thought "Man that looks beautiful but idk if they'll be able to make the whole game look that good."
Boy do I stand corrected. This game looks INCREDIBLE and what's even more impressive is how fun it looks. I truly cannot wait
Sick, great progress.
I continue to be astonished by this project. If you're able to deliver what this looks like here, it will be a seminal accomplishment that everyone will be talking about for a long time. Best of luck and I can't wait to see more! Take all the time you need on it!

Wowwww.... now, can we get Stephen Russell to voice the protagonist? 😅
Kidding, this looks AMAZING! Can't wait for the demo!!!
Also, wow, animation and animation states are so 🤤
I was expecting something cozy and fun, but this also looks mechanically rich. I'm somehow even more excited than before!
Can't wait to save thy fair maidens
In 1998, when Thief - The Dark Project was released, I was so absorbed by the game at the age of 12 that I learned to sneak around in real life. I asked my mother to buy me a black hoodie and black pants, then practiced moving silently for months. I regularly hid from my friends and parents so I could surprise them from behind. I'm really happy that you're bringing back the atmosphere and essence of this old gem. I wish you lots of strength and good health to finish the game!
So have they found you yet?
@faultyantivirus They've been dead for a very long time, so there's no chance of that happening. (I didn't kill them, I swear.)
I never even played thief but this still made me think of it, I wonder exactly why.
Amazing work, can't wait to see more!
The Sound effects are so DAMN GOOD !!
Cant wait to play this.
Never seen a game like this before absolutely breathtaking! 👀💯
HOLY SHIT. NEVER IN MY YEARS I"D WAGER THIEF IS BACK! LETS FREAKING GO!!!
The art style alone is a spectacular draw! I will be following this with excitement!
wow, im in love
Beo, this looks genuinely too good to be too. I hope to god its real, cause this looks amazing.
"All is as it was written, when the time comes, beware the Pixel Age"
Brother Dosiuss of the Keepers
can't believe no one thought to to make watter arrows able to create puddles 'till now. i'm hyped.
..larian kind of did.
There are oil flasks in Thief 3 that player can throw, which create puddles that NPCs can slip on.
Someone thought it was an “ice arrow” that made the person slip, but for elegant parsimony it’s much better if the same water arrow that puts out a torch also creates a slippery puddle. Wet smooth floors are slippery.

Thief but even better with the voxel and pixels. Buying it day one
Love the 90s retro gaming and the computer at the start!!!!!
the ice arrow is one of the coolest things Ive seen in years
Haaaa, I get it!
Sub Zero
Wins
Badum tss
This looks so cool!
1:08 I'M GETTING DARK MESSIAH FLASHBACKS!
From what? 0 for me and i played DMMM like 10 times
@DonnyKanone You can make someone slip by creating an icy surface. Zoomers need to always relate anything that's vaguely related with lots of hyperbole.
@DjellowmanAh, from the ice? 😂😂😂 Thanks for clearing that up. 😅
@DonnyKanone played the game 10 times and doesn't get the reference, oh buddy
@LuXxenatorXim not getting GETTING DMMM FLASHBACKS in all caps from freezing a puddle you clown. 😂
I just blew a load all over the university library psychology shelf
Breath of the Hitman with a crisp 90s fantasy PC game aesthetic?
I'm game
Tho I like this style, I feel it could show a bit more details. 0:56 A good example is this scene. This style makes it hard to see contrast. Every time you stop the clip it looks like a 2D pixel art screen, it's amazing !
Somewhere, in a shadowy corner, a thief is grinning.
Gotta admit, the gameplay kinda overshadows all the nice tech eye candies, and I'm not convinced by the extremely quantized animation time - but it's just a gameplay reveal, this goes straight in my wishlist ;)
Beware of scope creep!
Yeah I think the animation was a problem in the video.
it's like Thief and Betrayal at Krondor had a baby... i love it.
0:54 that loot stealing animation and sound oh my god. Almost creamed my pants
Literally the remake that Thief fans wanted. Not the vr slob that Vertigo tried to push on us.
My first impression was Kings Quest meets Thief, and I absolutely love what you're doing here, and will (attempt to) wait ever so patiently for the full release!! An automatic wishlist for sure!

Really like the sound design.
One of the best graphics I've ever seen in my life.
I like all the graphics, personally.
Holy glaze
Bros never played Red Dead 2
@realMemberberries I said one of the best, not the best. I've already platinumed Red Dead. You lacked reading comprehension
It’s like one of those cool-looking AI generated ads for mobile games that don’t match the aesthetic of the actual game at all, but it’s hopefully real this time. 🤞

LITERALLY DUDE

@kingoietro99 THIS 💯🍻
@kingoietro99 Is this an rpg? I'm pretty sure it's closer to a Thief-like game based more around stealth and such.
@GameSaysWhat rpg is a wide term. You could say it's a roleplaying game on being a thief. Immersive sims as this type of game is called can be a subset of rpg. Its a really large subject to talk about honestly.
Yes.Yes. And Yes.
I bet this would look incredible on a CRT

god yes! please let it have many "can i do this?... wait wow i can!" moments
Yeah, we need a lot less "Do you see that mountain? You can climb it".
Welcome to the world of immersive sims. Look up The Dark Mod if you want a 100% free, extremely high quality game made by a passionate community. This game is a tribute to the original Thief series of games which The Dark Mod is based off of.
"У нас есть Гаррет дома"
Гаррет дома:
0:55 I don't know why but the sounds and animations those coins make tickles my brain
Totally agree. I hope it doesn't get changed later in development
Sseth will play this game because of this animation
Oy vey
if Age of Empires was a 3D FPS
Have you tested this game on a CRT? I think it would be interesting to see how it would look like!
Perfect use case of CRT since it blurs pixel jaggedness
Can't wait to try out reshade filters on it 👌👌
KEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN
In no way shape or form does any of this look like sprite work. What crack are you smoking?
@FilthyHyena I'm used to playing doom mods where sprites are very elaborate and can look something like this.
3d models, row-poly row-res shader, 12 frames per second limit.
@WMan37 No. No doom mod looks like this.
- Is it 3-D or 2-D?
- Yes
I think some level of balance is needed. If you go all in for the pixel thing then things get hard to see
This is what I had in mind if I were ezio when he was a teen 😅
I like this one
Когда стилистика и геймплей важнее "невероятного" реализма
Looks like one of those early-mid 90s FMV interactive movie CD ROMs.
Throw in the word TAFFER and i am sold.
Wow!
Когда я услышал что подобная игра разрабатывается, я ожидал меньшего, но этот трейлер поднял мои ожидания от этой игры на новый уровень!
0:06 i have seen some indie games using this intro, is like we all agree it's a gamers dream
I swear stylized stuff like this has 10x more soul and is more beautiful to look at than ray traced hyper realistic 20 fps slop that's everywhere nowadays
