On this day 208 years ago, the USS Constitution defeated the HMS Guerriere of the Royal Navy shortly after the outbreak of the War of 1812. We hope you enjoy learning about the history of the vessel in our newly rebranded USS Constitution In4!
First and foremost, thank you for what you all do. As a member of the trust I take great pleasure knowing that preservation efforts are continuing. I want to also thank you for touching on the War of 1812. This period of conflict is not often touched on and I appreciate the effort to provide some insight into a period of American History that isn’t as popular as others.
Awesome video!!! I served in the US Army's 1st Armored Division from 1985-1988 while station in Germany and again from 1995-2001 while stationed at Fort Riley, KS. "Old Ironsides" was the nickname for the 1st Armored Division because the steel of the tanks was a reminder of the toughness of this ship.
It's wonderful to see and hear from Margherita M. Desy in this video teaching about Old Ironsides again. I was Constitution's command historian from 2011 to 2013, and the Officer of the Deck when she sailed under her own power once again on August 19, 2012. She is an amazing and beautiful frigate. Constitution has a rich and illustrious history. If you are in Boston, I highly recommend taking a tour of the grand ship. And make sure to see the U.S.S. Constitution Museum across the pier from her.
Thanks for this video! I encourage everyone who visits Boston to tour the USS Constitution - it's really a great tour for young and old. Also, the USS Constellation in Baltimore's Inner Harbor, just minutes from Ft. McHenry, is another great tour.
Excellent narration and, as always, I learned something new! May we choose in 2020 to honor our history, accept our nation’s many flaws, celebrate her ideals, and reject the present violent nihilism. Anarchy and riots will not usher in a new utopia. If any doubt this, then please look to the recently passed 20th century, and understand the phrase “never again”.
She is the only commissioned ship in the US Navy that has sunk an enemy warship. She still goes to sea. Captain Bainbridge lost the USS Philadelphia due to grounding off Tripoli some years earlier. The crew were imprisoned and made slaves because they were Christians. I'm surprised Bainbridge was given another command.
Clarification: She is the only ACTIVE commissioned ship to have sunk an enemy warship. All of the MANY others have since been decommissioned due to age.
@@mementomori1022 thanks for mentioning the typo. Of course, the American crew of the Philadelphia would have been mostly or all Christians. It's hard to imagine anyone familiar with the incident not knowing that. What makes you think that I was "really confused?" You're confused if you think they were pirates.
@@ArmyMP of course, if all the others are decommissioned, Constitution is the only one. Just like I said. Sorry to wait two years, but that comment of yours goes in circles. And mothball ships may be "on the rolls," but not in commission.
@@mementomori1022 you're going in circles only you could dream up with the commissioned ship thing. Even youtubers would know it didn't apply to all previous ships that ever existed. My original post was exactly correct. She is the only commissioned ship in the US Navy to have sunk an enemy warship in battle. Even Gump knows that doesn't mean all the ones that are gone. How you could think anyone would say the Philadelphia Sailors are pirates is beyond me. I certainly didn't. I said the forces that attacked and captured the Philadelphia weren't pirates, as you ignorantly claimed. So you got it backwards twice! That's a false name given to the nations of northern Africa that charged annual fees to pass their areas unmolested. It was quite different than common piracy. If you'd actually like to read an interesting book on the subject, may I recommend: Pirate Coast by Richard Zacks. It's an amazing read.
This was very interesting. However you should REALLY make Animated battlefield map videos on other American Battles. Like the Alamo, Fetterman Fight, San Juan Hill, Little Bighorn, the Monongehela, or Wabash River.
As A Brit it is a wonderful ship I have been on it. and I admire the way you preserve your history, well up until you tore down the CSA statues recently! At least we only burnt down the white house rather than whole districts like you are managing today, AND we were at war. Let 45 be 46
@Herman Greenfield there are statues of 6 presidents in London all still standing and respected by us.you must try harder my friend and look up irony. I genuinely like the USA I've been on lots of civil war battlefield and historic site on the estern seaboard and admire the way you preserve your 3 centuries of history
@@TheIceman567 yes I do like the US and have been warmly welcomed by its citizens wherever I go.My dad served with the us fleet on USS Capps and Isherwood on the Russian convoys in WW2 and always mentioned the great food and not accepting the colour bar which the 3 Brits on board refused to accept, making a point of eating in the non white areas. The American Battlefield Trust's 'mission' is to preserve America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educate the public about what happened there and why it matters. So Ancient Wars would be a 'no.'

However the USS Constitution was a great looking ship and the 5 of them made the Royal Navy sit up and take notice.

FederalFire22 , well said!
Thanks for your continued support! Our War of 1812 content has admittedly been slow moving out of the gate, but we are beginning to pick up steam.

Have you ever thought of doing an animated battle map series on some ancient wars? Maybe something like the punic wars? Also what about WW1 or WW2?

Gee it only took the HMS Endymion 13 minutes to dispose of the USS Presiden.t That battle does not show Capt Decataur in a good light.
