Oh my God! It's so good to hear Jeff sing after all these years. His voice is the best it's ever been. I hope to hear more in the not too distant future.
The more people say they'd love to hear new material from Mangum, and the more people urge him to record, the less likely it becomes that we'll ever hear from him again. I honestly believe that if no one wanted it, maybe if In the Aeroplane over the Sea was fondly recalled by indie fans, but not cherished and so highly extolled, he would get the itch to put something else out. I don't think he's ever been the sort to do what others would like him to do.
He sounds much better than I expected! It's more than a decade since Aeroplane, he's almost 40, smoked who knows how many cigarettes, and he didn't even write this song. One can only hope for more before he's gone.
Chris Knox penned the tune, its off a tribute album titled STROKE: Songs for Chris Knox. It is an awesome two cd set with bob moss, yo la tengo, mountain goats, etc all doing chris knox & tall dwarfs songs.
god, Mangum is seriously this generation's John Lennon and all he does is guest star on other E6 records. share your talents Jeff, it's been 12 years. Songs like this demonstrate you clearly still have it.
A lot of people here don’t know this song was written by Chris Knox, not Mangum. I recommend checking Knox’s music out and his past bands especially Tall Dwarfs.
@irascib1e a low-fi duo from New Zealand called the Tall Dwarves. One member (Chris Knox) had a stroke and Jeff played at a tribute/fundraising concert. See also the compilation album Stroke.
"Before he's gone" was a comment regarding his meager output, as oppose to his impending death. At his current rate, we should expect 3 more covers and 3 more noise collages before he's 70 years old.
@xshootingdovesx xshootingdovesx: This is a Chris Knox cover, from a modest little gift of a compilation album wishing him well after his stroke. Also, the song wasn't even available on the original release.
@Havokz3 By posting this online he made money for a stroke victim. I had no idea this existed until I saw it on youtube. One iTunes purchase later, Chris Knox has a little more money in his pocket.
Ugh...pitchfork has announced that he is playing "a short acoustic set" on May 6, 2010 for a Chris Knox benefit show at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC - and said it is not a comeback, only a one time show for his friend....CURSE MY FINALS AND CURSE MY LACK OF CASH, i would chop off my left hand to see this show...
Haha yeah I knew that it was a solo thing, I just was saying that I wished that this song would have been credited to NMH and not just Jeff Mangum haha
He needs to make another album, at least before he dies. Good artists always die early for some reason.
he is like 45 he isnt dying anytime soon
i think theres a reason why he went into hiding, he knew living that lifestyle was going to lead him down the wrong path
just saw him at coachella... greatest show i've ever seen in my life.

Nope not happening
This is the most epic 2 minutes of my life. I've missed this man.
This and the box set are the only new NMH releases in the last decade :( Come back Jeff, we miss you!

i was anxious and worried when i saw he had a song, worried it wouldnt be good.
first line, i teared up.
brilliant would be an insult.
Thank something for Jeff. I'm Glad he is back.
Simple Mr. Mangum, you are merely a god of music.

amazing. made my day.
@bobbied3 Aeroplane was 1998, since then he's sung quite a few songs that he stated were new. They seem pretty awesome.
even hardcore neutral milk hotel fans are unlikely to have heard of the cd without stumbling across this.
OMG a New Jeff Mangum song!!

Hopefully this means we will be hearing more from him
wooooooow!!!
Anyone else excited for Coachella?
This song was in the latest Rolling Stones issue.
(3 and 1/2 stars.)
Going to see him at Coachella in April... Jesus Christ...
This is like if JD Salinger published a new book. I'm glad Mangum isn't dead...
you should clarify in info that this song is a cover.
Tall dwarves

Still the same.Epic!
It's a Tall Dwarf cover. But man it's way better than the original.
Stroke: Songs for Chris Knox
I would rather steal and not study for finals than chop off my left hand. . .
i've been googling forever and i can't find who wrote this song! what is this a cover of!?
irascib1e I believe this is an original song written by Jeff Mangum
Mangum is god.
i came
he did not write this song
A cover of a cover of a cover?
yummy...
An older, more mature Jeff Mangum.
kk
@ngrbeatr coverception
That's pretty cool. Though I'd like to see his 'comeback' not as a cover.
Why couldn't this of been credited to NMH
Haha yeah I knew that it was a solo thing, I just was saying that I wished that this song would have been credited to NMH and not just Jeff Mangum haha
NoiseKidd because neither Mangum or NMH wrote this song
its a cover lol
