Aside from the negative comment about the Dad's shirt, This is Brilliant !! So sorry that people have to be negative like that. This is exactly what happened to my son. His Dad wore a uniform shirt, but its not about the god dam shirt, its what happens to our children when Dad can't make the time ! My son turned out just like him... not at first but now in his 30's ...he's just like him... It's sad... Thanks for this Brilliant take on what this song actually means !!!! Everytime I hear this I tear up cause time is so fucking cruel I spend as much time with my dad cause I know we aren't promised tomorrow and I know if I lose him I'd die of a broken heart my dad's my best friend going to conventions, talking telling me stories of his childhood, and it scares me that one day I'll go to his room and I'll forget he's passed on.
My dad served in the marine corps when I was kid, and he never got the time to do anything, and then he got sentance to 3 years in jail, and now hes back in the pen, and this song reminds me of how little time I got to spend with him.
A lot of absent dads out there who werent there early in life and now want a relationship. Here is where forgiveness comes into play. Its never too late until one is in the grave. Make your move now!
You can never ever do enough & you will have some regrets. As you get older & raise your own kids you realize your parents made it look easy. You also understand they made very painful sacrifices for their children. Without complaining & hid those sacrifices from their kids.
