Of course, Xiang Liu would rather stay Fanfeng Bei forever with Xiao Yao by his side BUT he feels indebted to his gone patron, so he thinks he must die fulfilling his duties. He puts his duties before anything else. He is filial and responsible person. I appreciate this side of his personality. I totally believe that if his patron didn’t rescue him, he would be a free spirit wandering the world, and he wouldn’t have become cruel and evil.
He's no evil. His far from a villain and he didn't go mad despite his hellish circumstances and hard life. And he remained untainted and righteous. XL is the kindest and the most understanding soul throughout the novel. His actions were no SAINT, but his intentions has always been good, it's always for the others not for his to gain and protected XY. His death brought an "end" to the long war and conflict since the prequel (past) (XY's parents story) Xiang Liu is a bred of war, a survivor, he did not only stay in Chengrong because of patron but he understand the conflict itself, the ChengRong's cause, he in fact respect CX, he remembered his drinking buddies whom he swore to remember and bodies he buried. He has lived long than any of the characters in LYF and we can only imagine how many he has killed, died right in his eyes and the bodies he buried that he lost count on them. He honors those people. And he loves XY the most. He never threw XY away, he just couldn't stay. He hid the truth because he is not only protecting her but he is guarding her heart against himself. He didn't even make it hard for everyone to kill him, he just walked in the battlefield at this weakest state with a severe injury, he was dying. XL is a grey character who perfectly walks in balance and yin-yang.
Xiang Liu isn't evil....His caring heart shows that...but he feels he must fulfill his duties....I wish he could stay as Fangfeng Bei and be with her.. But I do love both Xiang Liu and Bei..❤❤
