I have a Nuvo plastic flute. I was so intrigued when I saw a picture of a guy playing one in a swimming pool that I simply had to have one. Well, it's a little clunky and I have to work harder to get a similar quality of sound to my professional model flute, but I really, really like the Nuvo for certain purposes. It's a perfect travel and goofing-off flute. It can go to the beach, it can go on hikes, and if you accidentally drop it in the creek it will not be harmed because it's waterproof. (There's one review on RUclips of a professional flutist putting on a swimsuit and taking her Nuvo into the shower to prove it can be played under wet conditions.) I have also read accounts of professional flutists who have used them to keep in practice while recovering from surgeries because they are very lightweight. I just wish these had been around many decades ago when I was in high school marching band. (No, I am not a paid spokesperson.)
The only thing is my Amazon flute that I got would make people give up before they get going because of the amount of leaks. I think in the uk there are places that offer discounts and monthly payments for school children.
Understandable. My experience with them, out of the box, are actually fairly decent instruments. Now if you’re using them a lot or rough on them (like school children would be) it will definitely not stand up and you’ll end up with a bunch of leaks, for sure. We have the same where quite a few music stores have rental programs which would definitely be a better option.
I did only buy it to test though and k don’t have a really expensive flute I have a tj privilege and I could hear the difference. I got mine second hand from eBay it had been serviced so it wasn’t a massive risk.
Known name brands will also be much easier to service and keep alignment longer. There are definitely noticeable differences in sound eBay/Amazon to a known name brand. I was just stating, for someone who wants a beater flute or not sure their child will stick with it, isn’t an awful option like most people seem to say it is, but also keeping in mind, they are throw away instruments.
