He really wanted Liu Yuning to sing this song because of LYN's own backstory but because LYN was also filming a drama at the same time, he already had too many songs that he had to prep and couldn't take on another one. FYI, all the previous songs on Melody Journey were filmed on the same day so he had to prep 4 songs already. So when Li Bofan's song didn't get chosen, he thought that was it and was quite despondent. But after filming wrapped, LYN kept thinking of this song and then asked if he could perform it for the gala. So LBF was very pleasantly shocked when he received a call 2 months later from the producers asking if LYN could sing this song. That's why he couldn't stop crying on stage.

The biggest difference before and after his surgery is that before his voice was a lot more raspy and gritty which fit into the more rock style he embodied at that time. After his surgery, his voice became a lot 'cleaner' in a way that it's smoother and more light. I really recommend checking out some of early performances before the surgery as well to hear the changes in tone.
Moreover this last stage show in Macao (all the picking and interviewing among the producers and vocalists are done in mainland China but performance stage took place in Macao China MGM) Liu Yu Ning already finished his work shooting a drama(lost of vocabulary because lack of knowledge). Although interim he still keeps producing OSTs and other engagements such as detective programs (in this job he has many outfits and funny things such as he shrinks when all the lights turned down and in black environments because of fear - might be pretending but sure we are all entertained very much). And one day before this gala he and other vocalists also joined another big show, they arrived Macao around 0400, so the itinerary is really very tight and energy consuming.
