  • In this latest video I take you on a bit of a journey through some of my own personal discoveries around old traumas surfacing, body tension, and also severe physical pain. Long story short, I did a lot of intense and shock-producing sports in my childhood, teens, twenties, and early thirties, and yet again I am amazed at how clever the nervous system is, not to mention its associated somatic systems, at storing up and hiding old painful stuff.
    Did you know that I post all these videos on my blog (which is over on my website)?

    I almost instantly calmed down watching this, every time I notice my neck/head tension I feel an urgency to heal it and a guilt for still not being healed. Hearing that the tension is a part of the healing has taken away a sort of shame ❤ thank you!

    Thank you, I really needed to hear this. I've been questioning why some days I feel worse instead of better after soothing my nervous system. This video helps me to make sense of the recurring tension. I will continue to address the trauma now that I understand the healing process more thoroughly.

    Thanks for this, Irene! I've been going through a rapid healing from burnout & complex stress. I have been very self-aware & intuitive around my experience and the residue it's left. I also work within the Psychiatric system, currently co-facilitating Trauma-informed/Patient-centered care... I found you just as I started to notice the slight signs of burnout and knew this was more than the literature suggested. My body was systematically shutting down, I was "wasting" and visiting a chiropractor twice a week, a massage therapist once a week....my stomach was a mess and my lymphatic system was causing problems. All I could vision was the chart in the Chiropractor's office of my spine and what happens when the nervous system gets impinged...My body was coming out of a lifetime of "freeze", as soon as I had nothing but me and the pandemic. I've been through the gauntlet, even argued what you mentioned above, with my doctors... all pretty much laughed. I was labelled chronic fatigue, fibro & burnout...yet, no treatment plan, just left. Hearing you confirms my theory and gives me confidence in my self-scanning practice & I'm also not making things up to suit me because I refuse my childhood experience be flipped into a mental illness, I have never had. Long-winded, but necessary... a ton of stress lifted with this paragraph alone. Much appreciated!

    I'm so glad you specifically talked about not being able to move one's neck due to pain and tension. Since I recently started the 21 days nervous system tune-up I've been having weird body tension symptoms. The last 2 days I have had an inexplicable very painful stiff neck that doesn't really react to painkillers. I took the day off today, but somehow it feels like I'm wasting time and should find a solution for the pain asap so I can go back to taking care of my children and other responsibilities. Now that I've watched this video, I'm reassured that I'm doing the right thing and know it's a good thing that stored tension is leaving my body.

    When you mentioned after a hard day of skiing or paragliding (I had a squirrel suit I made myself for a while and jumped off mountains in Colorado. I fuggre skated. I skied bumps and climbed anything verticle - and sometimes I fell off... So, I get you big time!!💕), when you mentioned waking up in the morning and all the muscles around your neck being so sore, I had a major somatic flashback! it was awesome, Irene! What I remembered most was going to work in the morning and having that issue, and wrapping a sweater or a turtleneck or something around my neck to hold my head up while I cut potatoes and tossed omletes. Then we just went out and did it again! Old football injuries...lol😏🤔😁💕

    I am in somatic experiencing therapy since 3 years.
    It was very humbling for me to see how the second vaccine and my intense reaction to it, scared me so much that I didn’t feel safe in my body anymore. I booked a session with my SE therapist and we worked through it and I could come back.
    Same thing after a colonoscopy.
    I am so grateful that I have a skilled therapist I work with and I find my way back.

Thank God I can follow Smart Body Smart Mind for the 3rd time. I'm going to understand more and fine tune in. Discovering resources in my body and pendulating between the storm and what feels safe. Wow. Just a wow. The outer armour - when I’m hurt, I need silence - for nobody to speak so I can focus on keeping the pain out. I end up letting pain build to the point where I’m barely functioning and have to “capitulate” and accept that I’m in pain. This was a big lesson for me today. Thank you 🙏🏻 ❤️

    Ah, yes! This is exactly what is happening to me as I started healing, and each time, something is about to come up and heal, that will most likely mean crying and feeling, it starts to create tension around the heart/shoulders/neck.
    My trauma is much about being beaten up every day by older siblings, emotional neglect, witnessed and been part of physical abuse, and whatnot. It is plenty regarding not being allowed to express my feelings or not being taken in consideration so I come with a lot of rage and at times, scarcity mentality from so much living in survival mode. I am aware and working on emotional release more than anything. I had nobody to show me that how I feel, what I believe and think, what I feel and how I express is ok. I now had the ignorance veil lifted and given the amazing blessing of healing. I am not always able to be grateful or feel it was fair, but I know I was not a victim, even if I am not alwaya feeling i wasn't. I know I wasn't and working on healing those inner babies and giving them the opportunity to learn when it was supposed or received what I am just learning I am allowed to receive.

    This is super helpful to know 🙏🏼 and confirming my intuition of what I’ve been experiencing! As an ex an professional athlete and dancer that experienced numerous injuries and ended my career with a severe injury 12 years ago, I still experience pain, discomfort and tension from time to time in various parts of the body where I once had injuries even if they have already “healed”. I thought there was something wrong for many years but realized it was nervous system dysregulation etc. I found your channel a few years ago and have the 21 day tune up. I’m hoping to join your next round of SBSM! Thank you Irene! 💛🌸

    My boyfriend and his mom were hit by a drunk driver going 60 mph 35 years ago and she had to be removed by the jaws of life and she had a severe mental breakdown and has had torticollis for years. Just recently it clicked for me that the torticollis was undoubtedly from the car accident. She is the kind of person who only trusts allopathic medicine and is very stubborn so I'll likely not even try to share this with her but I really wish she'd listen.

    I’ve been doing the primal release work for a few years now and it’s been extremely exhausting to say the least . The kundalini has been doing this for me but I honestly had to take some time off , my body needed time to recover . I took about 6 months off and I’m starting to work a little more verbally around my belief systems . I worked in gyms for years but also had major traumas outside . I’ve lived a life of physical and emotional intensity and I’m seriously noticing it now !

      I’ve recently started my healing journey and started Kundalini yoga which I really love. But my body feels honestly exhausted. So achey, muscle pain and bone pain and lots of clicking and popping! Childhood trauma landed me with ocd/health anxiety so it’s honestly been really difficult to believe that something isn’t really wrong - had so many tests done are all ok. I’m also a nurse and have been conditioned to think that anything happening is happening to you from some outside source and not something that’s happening from within you like trauma healing. It’s a really difficult paradigm to shift from x

    Man, I wish I would have had this video last year when I started the 21 Day Tune up. Two weeks in I woke up and wasn't able to move my neck to one side, then it was both sides, then the other. This is exactly what I'm experiencing now, 2015 I had a neck injury and I was so terrified that I was either in fight or flight or in shutdown. I thought the tension had left after somatic work but 8 weeks ago I did some myofacial release and it's completely triggered it all back up. I feel like I've been catapulted back to 2015, but obviously with more regulation in my system. Whenever I tune in to it, there's so much emotion and old narrative which I can see more clearly now. Off for a massage tomorrow ( gentle one ) and think il be seeing my Somatic Experiencing Practitioner again. This video brings a lot of reassurance. Thank you

    Is this also a thing when healing a developmental trauma? I feel like I am already far along on my healing way, sometime I feel like I just have to make a flip and the trauma will leave my body - but on the other hand I can feel the physical reactions of my body like having a hard time breathing, feeling of stress and anxiety in my stomach and also high body tension more than ever even though I don't engage with these feelings most of the time. Can this be a healing sign, like the trauma showing more of itself before it leaves and if so, what could be the final missing step? Thanks a lot in advance!

    • @fartun90
      @fartun90 3 года назад +17

      I can tell you from my healing journey that this can absolutely be related to developmental trauma. As you get more and more in tune with your body and regulated, all the past unresolved traumas show up. But your body has its own intelligence and it knows perfectly when to release old stored traumas as it knows what you can handle at the given moment. So just give yourself the time to heal, take things easy and take good care of yourself. All the best to you and I wish you that you can heal and enjoy life. 😊

      Hi Leyla Harry, Jen here from Team Lyon. My understanding of Irene's teachings is that she doesn't use the term "emotional trauma". Trauma happens when we experience something that the nervous system doesn't have the capacity to handle, and these experiences can vary widely in type and origin. I'll link to one of her videos in case you want to learn more.

    I was DID from childhood trauma in cults etc and integrated in Feb 2020. Since then the (what I call) body memories have been horrendous for sometimes days at a time. The more I can understand what my body is trying to tell me I do energy work on myself to release these patterns of pain and lessen the length of the pain. But if I distract from what my body is telling me and it goes on long it lasts for a long time. Is this what you're talking about???

    • @violetangelflame1

      I can tell if the pain comes on all of a sudden it is usually from the past and some time is a percentage, some in the present and some in the past. I just wish I could regulate when these come. I cannot predict what my body will feel like from hour to hour. I would like to be able to make plans with friends etc.

    Thank you for another great video. Was wondering if you have seen people with seemingly random multiple physical symptoms that arise while healing trauma? I've had chronic pain in my upper shoulders/neck off and on for years, I have a streak of light in my left eye that hasn't gone away in four months, and my abdomen goes back and forth between being flat for months, and looking like I'm 3 months pregnant for months. I eat well, exercise, and have been told by multiple doctors that it's just stress, posture, lack of hydration, etc. I've also been releasing some serious trauma with a therapist for a year now, and have been on supplements prescribed by my holistic physician. I'm wondering if somatic work might be beneficial for these symptoms?

    I have also experienced a lot of shock trauma. Not quite as many events as she, but I can definitely relate to Irene's shock trauma history.
    I'm feeling tension mostly in the neck and shoulders. My right (frozen?) shoulder is very painful. I feel my tendons are susceptible. I hiked a mountain that I am very familiar with and experienced with, and afterward, all the joints in my body were super sore. That hike was 2-3 weeks ago, and I still feel some of the joints in my legs begging for ease. It's hard not to be able to exercise due to this. Even walking hurts. Rope flow, in the meantime, is helping as it is not hard on the body and keeps the joints moving. The interesting thing is lethargy showed up shortly after starting SBSM and lasted for about 3-4 weeks. I am not experiencing the lethargy as intense lately, but it still comes and goes. I do listen to my body when it wants a nap, and napping wasn't my thing! I haven't needed a nap lately, however.
    I used Wobenzym Joint Health supplements first but then stopped as I realized that this is all trauma response from the past. Is it better to not seek comfort with supplements or medication and allow the process to take its course?

    • @fartun90
      @fartun90 3 года назад +2

      If you already know that the tension comes from past shock traumas, then I would strongly suggest that you let your body heal at its pace without taking any supplements. But as Irene recommended in the video, you can always do light bodywork and/or work with a practitioner specialised in this work. All the best to you and may you live and enjoy a healthy and trauma free life. 😊

    Since starting your 21 day program I’ve noticed that my neck, shoulders, and jaw have become very tense. I suspected it was old trauma moving out of the body as I’ve had this chronic pain for many years but it has definitely gotten worse. I have a question about needing to “be with” the tension. If I use a pain reliever or a muscle relaxer, am I bypassing this ability to let it up and out and repressing the trauma again? Thanks!

      Hi Christine, Jen here from Team Lyon. Sometimes tension in the neck, shoulders and jaw can be a sign that there is some healthy aggression arising that wants to be expressed. Irene doesn't go into this in the 21 Day course as it's beyond the scope (she does cover it in SmartBody SmartMind). She has some related free resources that I'll link to in case you want to learn more.

    I live in Golden BC and all my friends were crazy active like you. They all have had numerous injuries, knee surgeries, etc. I also downhill ski and have had some yard-sale crashes but never really got hurt. Somehow it is me who has crazy body tension chronically, but not them. It flared up out of nowhere in 2009 and it's so hard to deal with. Only TRE seems to help, temporarily. My guess is it is emotional shit from years ago, but who knows. It's driving me nuts. TRE is not convenient to do, it takes time and leaves me very tired the next day.

    • @IreneLyon
      @IreneLyon  9 месяцев назад

      @Captain_MonsterFart, Jen here from Irene's Team. Underlying trauma and held survival responses can often contribute to chronic tension patterns. As you learn to grow nervous system capacity, and work with the underlying survival responses, your baseline level of tension may well change significantly.

      Hi Claudia, Jen here from Team Lyon. You may have heard Irene talk about how often we can be in a state of functional freeze. In this state, we may be quite active but we're also somewhat disconnected from our physical experience. I don't know if this was the case with you, and it's not uncommon in the world of athletics (including extreme sports). I'll link to one of Irene's related videos in case you want to learn more.

      Hey sidastralia, Seth here with Team Lyon. Thanks so much for being here! Yes, I would agree that it is very likely that you were living in functional freeze due to what you experienced in your childhood. When we can't be authentic and when our nervous system and psyche doesn't get what it needs, and gets a lot of what it doesn't need, this is the result. Our physiology learns to numb out our environment. So yes, it does make a difference with healing in that you generally will want to work on building a lot of internal resource and safety before diving into big 'trauma work' as it is traditionally understood, though we view building these foundations as an essential element of trauma work that are a must if we didn't get them growing up. Irene has made a lot of free online material as well as a few different levels of paid offerings for people like you who can't afford a practitioner. I'll link all that stuff below. I suggest getting started with her free resources, and then checking out some of the paid programs if the free stuff resonates with you.

    What can be done to release,tension if my body has been chronically stuck in the,trauma reflex (coined by somatic practice ) for the past,few years?

    • @IreneLyon
      @IreneLyon  Год назад

      Paul George, Jen here from Team Lyon. The short answer to your question is that releasing long held tensions patterns often involves learning about the nervous system and how it works, and then learning about one's own system and how to support it. In these ways, we learn to grow what we call nervous system capacity and regulation, and to work with the survival responses that are held in the nervous system.
      Irene currently has a 4-part series on the Essentials of Health and Healing available until tomorrow. This could be a great way to learn more about your question, and learn some related practices too. Here's a link in case you'd like to learn more: irenelyon.com/essentials/

    • @IreneLyon
      @IreneLyon  2 года назад

      Hey Patti, Seth here with Team Lyon. Yes, if the pain isn't from an acute injury we just experienced, then it is VERY often a pain associated with an old injury, or event, or multiple things, that were traumatic. When we are feeling sensations like you describe, wit can be helpful to work on creating space around the area, which can help it move through - so applying the principles of the diaphragm lessons in these areas could be helpful. Also, in those lessons we create space by inhaling - sometimes it can also be helpful when we exhale to let out some sound that vibrates into, and expresses the experience we are having, which can also help those kind of stuck pains move and flow through.

    Its weird cause I have been having CRAZY thight neck this past week, after releasing emotional stuff and having deep discussions/ understanding….. And had Feldenkris work last week and a somato emotional treatment…..
    Could it explane the tensions coming back w/o injuries or minor exercise?
    I LOVE mtn biking…. Its one of my deepest passion I don’t want to stop!
    But atm if I do just a bit of exercise I have muscle twitches, thightness and cognitive symptoms (100% related to physical exertion, a lot of times 12-24 h later….)

    • @IreneLyon
      @IreneLyon  Год назад +1

      genevieve Baril, Jen here from Team Lyon. The body often tenses against sensations, emotions, and movements as a way to inhibit the expression of these. This is a very common reason for tension alongside tension that can relate from physical injury and held survival responses.
      Often if we feel tension often releasing emotions, etc. AND the tension doesn't pass in a day or two, it can be a sign that we may have done too much and need to titrate more. I can't emphasize enough how important titration is in growing regulation. I too was an elite athlete and that tendency to push, go hard, to more can be deeply ingrained.
      In this work, particularly when early trauma is in the picture, less is usually more and is the more direction road to regulation and getting back on the bike. I'll link to a few related practices, the first two can be helpful when you're feeling the tension/too much in some way, the third is about the concept of titration that I mentioned above.

      I'm not able to say specifically what happened in your situation, and to offer some general education we may feel sick as we explore this work for a variety of reasons.
      As people come out of freeze it can be common to feel flu- or cold-like symptoms. Sometimes too as capacity grows, we may experience different forms of release, which can include feeling a bit sick, nauseous and tired.
      Other times when we have a big response to an experience, it can tell us that we've done a bit more than we have the current capacity to handle. Noticing what happens in the following days can often offer clues.
      This resource of Seth may offer a reminder of some of the different things we may experience as we explore this work:
