I rate Mile End, Alex, and his setting so much. An absolute WAD in his own right, but has enough vision and understanding to do this difficult balancing act: to get amazing, *hard* board problems together, world class comp style boulders, but keep enough variety for punters (like me!). A clear indication of someone with their own inspiration but also of someone who listens. Love to see it
It's always great to see Mile End. It's dear to my heart having worked there back in the 90s. A big hello to anyone who remembers me or my comp wall problems (the days of small crimpy holds) Setting is both an art and a science and it's amazing to see the evolution of indoor boulders, and the professionalism that is needed to create inspiring modern routes.
Such a brilliant vid, really took me back to my undergrad days, heading to MEW after uni to hang with firends and clear my head. This wall and the route setting will always be a favourite! Big respect
I've never been to Mile End but Alex's setting seems to have a huge reputation through videos and social media - definitely looking forward to getting down there soon.
Alex is a super climber and setter but so is Michal who appears in this video at this back stage maaaany times. I loved Michals approach and training tips when i climbed in Mile End. Super friendly and very peofessional in ecerything he does! See you soon Michal!
Really good video and amazing editing! Routesetting is such an interesting world, it's great to see an insight into it. I hate washing holds though :'(
PLeaes make this a series! Would like the same questions and get the thoughts of other routesetters in the UK (different setting styles): Emma Twyford, Percy Bishton, Alex Fry, Gaz Parry
I approach setting with a more similar mindset as I would chess than I would art (unless you think those are similar or the same). Chess as in you're thinking of very specific ways to do specific things and you want to narrow down the climbers options like you would your opponent in chess.
Alex is an absolute legend!

Wish crimpy problems were still as popular
This should be on the homepage pf the website. Beautifully filmed and a great story.
Great insight into routesetting, just the extra needed psyche for the gyms reopening
Always a pleasure to head to Mile End to get on the blocs.
What a precious video. Nice words, nice boulderproblems and nice cinematography. Really well done👌🏼thanks for sharing
Beautifully shot and some wise words from the master!
As a fellow creator this video is so impressive. Excellent flow and storytelling. Really underrated.
As a routesetter myself, I couldn't agree more with you. Beautiful video !

Amazing! Really respect your craft!
Uuuf so good video! Motivation for the quarantine! 🙏🙌
So called 'wads' used to tell Percy Bishton that his setting was too hard.
Then he would cruise up stuff they could barely get off the ground on.
