The real reason it's still here is probably that removing it would be more trouble than it's worth. Lexus hasn't made a full model uplift on the IS line since 2013. That's what it would take for them to redesign the center stack, etc.
for people that don't know, it's a DVD Player and available only Mark Levinson equipped IS or other Lexus that have ML and a CD slot. It plays DVD audio/CD and if you are in park it also plays DVD movies
some models also have the DVD player without ML. my 4GS has dvd with no ML. it's great, i can chill in my car on my lunch break or while someone i've dropped off is in the store watching my (legally obtained) burned DVD collection.
I owned one of these and regret selling it. If you upgrade the exhaust you never want to stop driving because it’s like a budget LC500 sedan. I really need to rebuy one before they go
I put a custom made exhaust system on my is500. The v8 sounds glorious. Just put some pilot sport tires, springs, dry air filter, and a pedal commander and wakes the car up!
I had a 2014 IS 250. I loved the speed and the cornering, I hated the GPS and the fake leather. The GPS was glitchy, the fake leather started showing signs of wear within 6 months of taking delivery.
i own a 2013 GS 350. not as powerful, mind you, but it is a phenomenal car. i feel like all of the "driver's car" lexus vehicles embody the spirit you were talking about. i can give people rides and they'll be comfortable with plush leather seats and a smooth calm car. but the minute i drop them off, and i have a late night stretch of open roads and interstate ahead of me, i get to do what their other purpose is. *drive*
You had me for a minute! I was like, wait a minute, he reviewed the car last year, what changed?! I have the USB with the red interior and I agree with you, it’s awesome! Thanks for posting!
I call bias and bullshit on your transmission comments. The car needs to be in sport mode and manual mode to get the fastest shifts. It shifts in 200 milliseconds which is literally the same shift speeds as the new BMW ZF 8 speed in the M3/4. Do you call shifts slow on that car? I bet you don't.
I'd rather have this than anything coming out of Germany right now. The V8 sounds fantastic and the car is built to last. I don't need the extreme performance over everything of an M or an AMG. A Lexus IS is for the person who wants a nice car and has nothing to prove to anyone. CDs are still convenient and many people, particularly Lexus buyers, still have stacks of them.
I had a 08 IS250 with the same lethargic paddle shifters and I couldn't stand it. Sold it within a year. Sure if I'd've gotten a manual I would have kept it.
IMO, just get the IS 350 RWD. I've owned a 2016 IS 300 AWD, then a 2021 IS 350 RWD, and now a 2023 IS 500. The 350 RWD has a much more modern-feeling transmission than the AWD cars. Unless you live somewhere with snow, you probably don't want the AWD... it is just unnecessary.
You lose a bit of front passenger legroom if you go for AWD. I think it's because part of the AWD components are located in that area. Adding AWD to a car of this size means some compromises have to be made so that the AWD components can fit without significantly modifying the car's design. That includes the hump in the front passenger footwell and the 6 speed automatic transmission instead of the 8 speed on RWD models.
I always feel puzzled when i see these gray and silver vehicles im especially disappointed knowing that some of them have an interior as gorgeous as this one. I think Lexus should have bumped the power to 500hp to match the displacement and name of the model. I kinda wish for the upcoming final facelift of the IS they would make some limited models with extra power as a sendoff before going EV with the next IS. I mean this is a V8 after all.
It has a CD player and a big V8 and it's a 2024...I'd totally buy it. (but just because it has a CD player doesn't mean you have to pick the worst CD ever) The track pad is dumb, the older "mouse like" controls were finnicky but still better than that...Also the snobbery about having an aux in or a disc drive lets everyone know you're an Apple Slave.
The torque converter literally does not matter; I have no idea why he pointed this out. The AA80E transmission is the same one as in the Lexus LS 460, but it has been re-tuned for this car to provide faster shifts.
my best friend has the same exact car, 8000km and the paint is peeling off, engine has no low end torque and the transmission takes 15min to react, its never in the good gear, i strongly recommend to do an exhaust mid pipe upgrade, the exhaust note is much better without being too loud, michelins ps4s changed the dynamic alot too
@@damilolaakanni yes I forgot about that the ISF and the LS460 used the 8AT but the RCF uses the 8 speed cuz the one in the sienna was detuned for minivan duty
The torque converter being shared with the Sienna is a stupid thing to point out. The AA80E only has one of the fastest shift speeds for a torque converter automatic transmission, 0.1 seconds. That's almost dual-clutch level. So who cares where the torque converter came from?
HUGE PROPS to Lexus for still offering CD players in their cars in 2024!!! 👏💿🎶
I haven't owned a CD in ages, but I agree.
Subaru does too 😂
It is also a DVD player, so I can watch my Adventure Time DVDs while I am waiting on my Sonic order. Perfection.
Especially considering they removed it from the new LC
@@RevLexus :(
I often say that Asian brands always keep it old school in terms of technology in their vehicles, and the CD player is a perfect example of that.

I still use the cd player all the time it’s cheaper then having to pay for subscription every month.

Your explanation starting at 12:15 to the end is exactly what this car is about.
100%. It's a car you can drive in pretty much any situation and enjoy it.
great video Zac, love the IS 500 content.
Am I having de ja vu or is this a reupload? I feel like I seen it before
🤨
Great video Zak, thanks for sharing
Great review and earned a subscriber! I currently own a 22' GR Supra and need a four door. Really considering IS500 to replace it!
Given the type music being listened to in the car, they may be while the was a love/hate relationship described in the video.
I can get 33mpg highway in mine. Yeah if you drive it and have fun with it good luck getting above 20.
That cd came out about 10 years ago
It has active... ALL dampers. I'm not sure who told you they were only adaptive in the rear. They're pretty much the same as in the IS 350.

Let the transmission warm up before you try to play with it. It’s really quite capable.
with cars like this being submitted my 2014 acura tl SH AWD is doomed to never get featured :{
I'd like to see your car featured.
I would really like to try the entry level v6 awd 6 speed auto one.

@@MintyFreshTurds you'd have to consider an older model (2006-~2013) to get that combination, unfortunately.
I have a 2016 Camry and the shifter is nothing like that. I think they changed Toyota shifters in 2018 /2020
They've been using that jigsaw shift pattern since the 90's (at least in the Lexus LS and SC), but over time the shift lever changed.
I'm pretty sure my 2015 Camry had the jigsaw pattern.
2:26 Jim Gaffigan, ladies and gentlemen!

How does it compare to an ISF?
Depends what you want to do with it. It’s not a track weapon. That said it tracked faster than the ISF according to Car and Driver.
To be specific, the IS F has beefier brakes and better cooling, but the IS 500 has more power.
This interior is ancient... There is no room for your phone in the center console
What? I put my phone in the center console every time I drive it.
I want one so bad
7:13 - you know damn well Toyota/Lexus didn't use that shifter in the 90s.
