I visited Norfolk Island in 2000 for 4 or 5 nights. Had a hire car and went on a tour the next day and watched the ships get cargo unloaded onto small boats ( dories from memory )when I first arrived. Was told the airport runway is a result of the American forces during World War Two. They used steel plates for the surface and they can still be seen as fences in various places. Went on a scenic flight out to the two islands and you can see the whole island from the air. I still have the video I transferred to DVD. I had an extra night there as the plane that I was to fly out back to Brisbane had to turn back to Sydney from memory to do with some issues. It was paid for by the airline. Loved it.
Ah Wow guys, awesome job, never seen this place b4, i am from Ireland, and i use to get P&O to the UK all the time hahaha.. didnt know P&O where here doing this, thanks Al & Deb, enjoyed this episode 🥰
It is the Pacific Encounter. We have a few PE vlogs on our channel from different cruises but we are going to do another in a week or two. 😍 Island Bliss in Fiji vlog is from the same cruise.
Wow…bought back memories of when Geoff and I together with Kerry and Trevor joined Lee and Mitch on their holiday 16 or more yrs ago. The Main Street is wayyyyy more built up than it was then. I remember when we went down to the pier and they were trying to bring in a crane but the barge couldn’t get in because the seas were so rough…and they had to wait for 3-4 days until they could……great video…love the little maps..
You'll need a lot more than 3 days if you go back for another visit. We were there for 9 days in May and didn't see it all. We're heading back for another 9 days in February.
@@alandeb do the introductory tour with Baunti, or Pinetrees. It’s a half day and gives you a really good overview. We booked the fish fry after that. We plan on doing the farm tour and the bird tour next time. Most of the accommodations there include transfers from the airport and the introductory tour as part of the package.
Have just found your channel. We are booked Pacific Encounter Cruise July 2024 to Norfolk Island ect……. Would love to see further footage of your cruise to see what we will perhaps be experiencing. Information on your chosen tours and pricing will be of interest also.
Hey Debra, We touched on shore tours in our last Q&A video. Our preference is a DIY tour. Most ports have locals who are looking for a way to earn some cash and are part of the island tour company. We use them and they are usually very flexible with where to go and negotiating a fair price. If it is your first cruise you may feel safer booking with the ship. Most islands have places close by to walk or swim/snorkle at. Norfolk we did a DIY tour and it cost $60 for get a ride to the lookout and then get a ride down to the old penal colony. Suva we went shopping at Jack (big green building) for some great clothing deals. The other Fiji stop we walked along the track towards the mountain and swam at the beach. We also visited the school (the take donations). Tonga we didn't get off because it was raining and didn't look that appealing from the ship - most people who did get off were not very impressed (I hope your experience is different) and Vila we got a van $5 into town to purchase our duty free. We also explored the markets and Pacific Islands Multicultural Festival that was on at the time. Vila did have some great shore tours. There is an 8 hour around the island one that is awesome. I'm sure one of the tour vans could also put together a half day tour if that's what you prefer. Anyways - I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time no matter what you decide to do. Thanks for being part of our community! 💖😍💖
Thank you for your advice re: tours. Very much appreciated . I have been watching your other videos. I saw one regarding people being mean to you on you tube. I am disappointed that this is happening to you both. Keep doing your videos, there are genuine viewers that enjoy your travels. @@alandeb
Hi Deb, im going to be going to Norfolk island in oct on p&o just wanted to ask what is the name of the business u booked your penal colony tour with please and thank u.. besides the other tour with the non 360 degree, what else is there to see there
We didn't book the tour until we got off the ship. The courtesy bus will drop you in town. They have a pop up tour desk there and sell 2 different tours 1. 360 island and 2. Kingston - both were not tours, more just a lift to the place and you walk around and check it out yourself. Personally, I wouldnt worry about the 360 - it wasn't worth $30. But, we did enjoy the history of Kingston. The main street was also a nice walk - looking at the art gallery, cafes and club.
I just did 3 weeks on island in Feb 2024. Try hire a car for the day (book in advance) they are about $40-$65 per day - any place on the island is only 12 mins away. Many places you can see for free, even the look out.
Wasnt impressed with seeing hundreds of people standing around waiting for the water shuttle back to the ship, i cant stand for long as i have arthritis in my spine, and it throbs.. so i think i might just have to stay on the ship because of the line ups 😵💫🥹😖😢
Hi Deb and Al! I’m writing my debut book called Barista On An Island which is about my experience working as an expat for 12 months 2021-2022 on the island as a barista and how such a unique tiny island gave me the breakthrough opportunity to get ahead in the hospitality industry. You’d be more than welcome to attend my book launch when I announce it. 📕 ❤️ im from Sydney xx cheers Zack
Congratulations on the book and it's really awesome that Norfolk gave you the opportunity to get ahead! If we're in Sydney when you launch, we'd love to come!
Sorry viewers, but if you think you have just seen Norfolk island, you have been ripped off. This is a very sad excuse for a travelogue. I was born on Norfolk Island and know better. You really need to go to the island and stay for at least a week to ten days to experience the island and its wonderful welcoming people properly. A few hours on the island and no contact with the people of Norfolk is a waste of time. Forget the P&O cruise, just fly there from Australia and enjoy one of the best weeks of your life.
It’s a shame you feel like that. Most of our viewers understand we were on a cruise (we also made it pretty clear from the beginning) and can only show what we do in a day. Like the thumbnail said…. 6 hours on Norfolk Island! It’s not click bait, we were there for that amount of time. We give an honest opinion about places we visited. In 6 hours we were able to visit these three places. Like I said in the video, another 2-3 days would have been great but I think 10 days would be overkill. We actually did talk to locals and a few suggested it was a very cliquey place unless you were born there. What’s your opinion?
@@alandeb We did 3 weeks (got married end of week 2) was not long enough for us. The locals know most only go for about 1 week, they notice you asfter they see you longer than that. Cruise stops give a very limited insite to the islands, but I did also fly into Port Villa after a cruise stop & that was also a blast of 10 days. It is a bit of a shame you only had the option of 2 things to do - any chance your shore day was on a Wednesday? The island is 1/2 shut on a Wednesday so that might limit things.

Nice video. I'm going to Norfolk Island for seven nights in September.
Nice, Let us know how you get on over there. x
Good presentation! Nice sounding vocals. No vocal fry and no inflection!
Thanks for listening! 😍😋

Quite a while ago then! Probably hasn't changed a great deal? Joint effort on the little maps...lol
Love your vids. New subscriber.
Thanks x
Nice vid , on the bucket list
Keep ‘em rolling 🎥… 👍🏻
Thanks for watching! Yes it is a must see - Kingston is very much like Port Arthur in Tasmania but on a smaller scale.

What would you recommend seeing the next time we are there? It's a beautiful place, that's for sure.

Didn't go there! Maybe next visit.
