The kids shouldn't be trapped in his game loops, the sort of limbo he creates for them breaks apart in pain and confusion. Like the Beldam or other fair folk, his love for the children is true, but inhuman.

It really depends on upbringing and how much you learn. For most people I'd say they'd get most of it at 13. But little intricate things they'd probably understand more at 14-15. And gain some of the best understanding, not just of what is going on flat out, but also in between the lines around 16. Of course as an adult you would hopefully understand more. And one person's understanding of something, may not be another person's understanding of something. (Sorry for any typos)
