Yes! This is one of the few of your GRE that I've not only heard but returned to repeatedly over my classical music journey. It's one of the THE key recordings/pieces that really turned me onto Handel's genius. Because of it I made it a point to explore all of Handel's operas and oratorios and discovered what a wealth of wonderful music they contained. To this day there's no composer I return to with delight and joy as much and consistently as Handel.
ABSOLUT!!! I bought this DG “Semele” some years ago, for the cast (esp Battle and Horne), and the conductor, John Nelson (woefully under represented on recordings). I listened, and knew upon first hearing that I need no other performance!
This is the second time I find one of your very best in my fairly small Cd collection. The first was the Poulenc Gloria and other works. PUre luck, because I bought most of them in charity shops for pennies, when I was a pennyless student in London.
Glorious work in a splendiferous recording! Though, I think the comedy is somewhat more immediately conveyed in the likewise splendid - and to that, fleeter recording under Christian Curnyn with the inimitable Rosemary Joshua as the epynomous heroine. No reason to start a religious war, though, as I wouldn't be without either recording of this pearl of Handelian bliss!
I have this recording and it is wonderful. My only quibble is with the sound of Miss Battle's voice which to my ears comes across as artificially brightened.
That's exactly how she wanted it to sound. She threw several tantrums during the recording and also at the San Francisco "La Fille du Regiment". After it's all over the staff donned the tee-shirt "I Survived the Battle!" (I have one in my possession :))
Back in early 90's when I was classical manager at CD Superstore I had a customer return this recording. It wasn't defective, just didn't care for it so I saved it from return bin (at major discount) and been loving it since 😊

Oh, this is such a wonderful, wonderful recording!
Many thanks for this recommendation; I look forward to listening!

For a short time this was available in a wonderful 41 CD box set of Handel Oratorios for about $1.50 a disc. Unfortunately now out of print.
It's an Operatorio.
An Oratopera?
Crazy that the Met planned this for this season in joint prod from Munich, but cancelled, paying off all the singers…crazy..
