The Kandake or ‘queen’ was a prominent figure in the Kushite Empire, often ruling the realm independently, not just as the consort of kings. Famed Kandakes such as Amanirenas fought against the Romans, while Amanishakheto is renowned as the owner of a hoard of gold jewellery found in her pyramid at Meroe. As a symbol of female independence and royalty, Kandake’s legacies did not die with the fall of Kush, but were continually celebrated until the present. This talk will narrate how and why the symbol of the Kandake continues to inform and vivify the present, from politics and theatre, to computer games and fashion.
