I'm 72, and have lived in northern Maine near the Canadian border since 2003. I was one of the several million US servicemen who participated in the War for the southern portion of Vietnam, and therefore one of the, perhaps, billion people who have participated, or been the victims of war, around the world since the 20th century began. I have seen many black bear up in Washington County while walking with my dogs on logging roads, and I simply love bears, even close up. But perhaps while studying bear hibernation, we might as well study why humans have thousands of nuclear weapons pointed at each other? Perhaps it's part of our DNA, just as bear DNA allows them to hibernate?
On You Tube, I've seen a male grizzly bear dig up a den of a black bear with three second year cubs, and a mother, and as three ran off, the remaining was killed and eaten by the brown grizzly bear boar. I've also seen a video on You Tube where two, little baby black bears, just born, perhaps, wander over to a Mother black and her two, second year cubs (perhaps the Mother had died in the den???), and so the Mother bear went up the tree and killed and ate one of the two tiny, recently born black bears. Ugh!!!
