- Ever seen a battle between fungi? Fascinating, right? As part of our research on the role of fungi in wood decomposition we paired up many different fungi to better understand fungal traits such as competitiveness and stress tolerance.

ABOUT THE CROWTHER LAB
We are an interdisciplinary research group, harnessing big data, machine learning and satellite imagery to build global ecosystem models. Our research aims to generate a fundamental and holistic understanding of global ecology in order to understand and address the global threats of biodiversity loss and climate change. Our lab is part of ETH Zürich, one of the world’s leading universities in Earth and Environmental Sciences.

Lmao.
hoo, ha!
Mine is red and green. Yours?
Dededede de de deee
those spores were fast as lightning
Neat how you can see the red variant get darker and more saturated as its pushed further and further back.
There's even a spot where it turns black in the bottom right bit of the dish! 🤯
When it got to the bottom they were finally like “HOLD THE LINE!”

Video about Fungus.. RUclips: CLIMATE CHANGE!, clicking "why am i seeing this" COVID-19!!!!!!
I dont understand
Yup, seeing the same climate change alert. Weird.
They mention climate change in the description
@@faithfocals it's because the words "climate change" appear in the description and RUclips is really dumb about when to apply that "Context" box
@@eragonawesome @gigagumno9129 Ah! Yep. I didn't read the description, so I missed a significant detail here.

Nice video. How did you set it up so flawlessly? No light reflection on the petri dish and just an empty void of darkness around it. This is looks amazing. I want to make my petri dish timelapse just like yours. Please teach me 🙏
Hi! First, thanks for watching! But we're sorry to inform you that this timelapse was done years ago - a friend of Prof. Crowther helped him with the technical set-up. In our current team, no one has the equipment nor expertise. There's probably online tutorials though among biologists who frequently do their own science comms material!
We tried ourselves to recreate something similar (not uploaded yet) with a black cardboard box & a LED light strip. It doesn't look as nice for sure but passable for a first try. Maybe something you could consider!
Probably a black table or paper with camera positioned above and one light above the camera? Probably a specific kind with filter material.
I'm not sure any real background material could be that black, you might have an easier time making sure the background is a different color from the dish and chroma keying it out, or just manually fitting a circular mask to it.
@@BadRAM512 Great tip!
As far as I know you need polarization filter lens to reduce reflections

What the Hell does fungus growth have to do with climate change?
climate change can induce an evolution to fungus to increase temparature resistance, too bad for us, our main defence is our high body temp. if fungus evolves to adapt to that, we all die.
This experiment reflects the behaviour of diff. species when they have to compete for resources. Insights into fungal behaviour are important to better understand overall ecosystem functioning - especially as they are affected by climate change.
Sure, @@CrowtherLab, but nothing in this petri dish simulates anything related to climate change. Resource competition happens, with or without changes in climate, anyway.
@@ralphanthonyespos9417 Well I guess we should all just stop studying how our nature works then :) man ppl like you always try to find ways to complain. never satisfied with life
@@ralphanthonyespos9417 *sigh* I wish people understood how to extrapolate better.... Yes, you're correct that Resource competition happens anyways. But what if the conditions favor one species over another? What if those conditions change and begin to favor another? What can THIS experiment tell us about climate change? A LOT!
You don't need to test every possible condition to understand that altering conditions will alter the experiment. It's literally why we invented the concept of variables and controls. This Petri dish is an enclosed environment. A closed system like our Earth. This is a simple way of seeing how resource competition works in a simple state without a bunch of other variables getting in the way.
Like, do you not get that the simple act of putting two fungi into a closed system is an inherent change to that petri dishes environment? If you didn't alter the conditions yourself, it would just be a chunk of plastic. In and of itself that says a lot about the Earth's closed system. If you alter a closed system by accelerating its climate, guess what? You're going to see some "results".
This is giving me nightmares because it looks more of a bunch of mold than fungi on the petri dish. 💀
Nicely done. What species are those?
So the orange one is Pycnoporus sanguineus and the white one is Phlebiopsis flavidoalba. :) Sorry for the late response!

i love this
why is this tagged with a climate change disclaimer
would love to see this with spalted pieces of wood if possible, i heard the black lines in spalting is the area where the fungi is attacking the immune system of the tree
it's where the mycelium ends. sometimes you will find spalting as some kind of demarcation line between two mycelia that are both consuming the wood. a very beutiful example of spalting would be "Giraffenholz" / giraffe wood (there doesn't seem to be an english name for this phenomenon, only the german onw) which is usually associated with the fungal species Xylaria longipes
@@Kammerliteratur that’s really cool wow! i would love to attempt to spalt my own wood sometime. i’ve seen some videos of people inoculating wood with fungi and then just waiting for it to finish while occasionally checking for rot.
